Good morning. It's mostly sunny and 78, with a hurricane warning.
"supposedly" there is an evacuation order for our county, though I live in the far Eastern part of the county, probably 50 miles from the Gulf. I am nearly at the county line. as far away as I can get, and still be in my county. The evacuation order is for all manufactured housing, though, anywhere in the county. I have an overnight bag packed, and am taking it to work with me today, just in case. I also have a "safe box" with some cash and my critical documents, such as birth certificate and DD214.

Curt: My former neighbor, moved there a few years ago and likes it. Wife and I looked at property in Western SC, just below Asheville, NC. Unfortunately there was snow on the ground and she decided we could stay where we were at and see snow.

Next month we will travel a little, and check out a few places. Younger son is at Patuxent River NAS this week, reminded me about St. Mary's County, MD...been a while but worth a look.

I set up a test train on the layout behind GG1 4913 (Original BLI run), new Bag/dorm Prr P85 coach, Stand in LW diner (Walthers), another P85B coach and the tavern Lounge. Runs nice. First time out of the box for the GG1 in maybe 10 years. Photos tomorrow.
 
Morning all,

Already been to Public Works as they start at 6:30 like I do. They're on "Summer Hours" where mine are "normal".

Had a random cloud drop a pinch of rain this morning. Not sure why it bothered, didn't even really get anything wet, and not enough to settle the dust. Currently 70° and partly cloudy, high later of 94°.

Terry(and the rest of the Florida Crew): You guys stay safe.

You know I feel the NWS and Hurricane agencies are huge embellishers upon their guesses. But you are there and I am not! Be safe, do the right thing and get away from that storm path. Sometimes you just have to believe the Agencies and better safe than sorry when it comes to your personal safety. The property is just that. Be well, be safe and a few pictures to remember it by!
 
Good Morning All. Mostly clear and 70° this morning. It was like a fall day yesterday with a high of only 92°. A bit warmer today through Friday and triple digits return Saturday.

The pool temperature has dropped to a very mild 87°, a level not seen since early July. I actually may have to take down the shade umbrellas next week to keep it at a usable temperature. Of course technically I'm not supposed to be in it for another week due to the cataract surgery, but I have kept my head above water since the beginning of August.

I spent an agonizing two hours yesterday setting up the new printer. The physical setup went pretty well, getting the wireless connection to work was not as easy. Duh! Remembering my router password started it off on the wrong foot. That took about ten minutes. Then in the midst of the setup, after the connection was made, the touchscreen asked if I wanted to set up the automatic toner replacement option. I kept pressing "cancel" and it backed out of everything. Had to start the process over from the beginning again. After 5-6 tries, I finally hit "accept" and then there was a further question about "now or later". Responding to that question allowed the process to continue. More dumb questions and options and it still didn't work. Then I opened an E-Mail from Canon directing me to a website to register my purchase. OK, maybe I had to do that before it would activate. Nothing in either the instructions or E-Mail indicated that. More bullshit to deal with, but finally after completing the registration, the wireless function finally worked from the desktop. Note that I haven't tried to print from my wife's laptop or tablet yet! Somewhere in a box of computer crap, I probably have the correct cable for hard-wiring it, but one was not included with the printer. I have a part left over that I have no idea where it goes or what it does. It was packaged separately in the box. It's not pictured anywhere in the setup instructions.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I did a little more on the chain-link fence. Didn't complete anything but I got the left side almost completed, and the front right side done. Should finish next time I get into it.

Sherrel - I fully understand your feelings regarding John and the cancer. I hate it when you have to watch someone younger go through that situation. I went through the same thing with my 10 years younger brother a couple of years ago. It was devastating for me and our whole family to witness the process during the last 8 months.
Joe - Good luck with whatever decision you make regarding moving. Most of your options seem to be much better choices.
Hughie - Love the hobo camp.
Terry - Stay safe.

OK, I am beginning to miss Jaz and her run-on posts. Anyone heard from her? Hoping that everything is all right.

Good morning to all. That pinch of rain Patrick talked about well I think one of its pinch cousins visited us overnight. My side table is damp out on the deck but very little else. It’s not a heavy dew and the TV weather guy was laughing about our 15% chance of rain barely appearing but turning 15% chance into a 100% happening. Locally we will hit 80 maybe today but it’s definitely moving into the mid to high 90’s on Friday through next week.

The grocery run this morning, grass cutting and drive over to the compost pile with the plant material pulled up out of the garden yesterday by the partner is my agenda. Played yesterday in a charity golf event as a last minute replacement. It’s one of the reasons we cut our trip. Part of the donation to play was dinner at a restaurant that has a 3 month waiting list! That was the main reason Terry strongly suggested we come home. Owned by 2 newly accredited Michelin chefs it was good but I saw no evidence they sold tires! We have now been there, it was good and we both mentioned we have no need to go back. There was a limited menu for the folks that paid for the dinner. I have seen the menu on the few nights they are open and for the 2 of us, it’s about the cost of 4 weeks of our Tuesday grocery runs. Too hooty/tooty for us. The golf was a 18 hole scramble which means nothing to you non-golfers but instead of a 4-5 hour time on the course got us through 18 holes in just over 3 hours. 200+ golfers but just 100 diners! The diners were all in the first golf flight and ate early at 5 with ceremonies following at 7. We were home by 10

I might see the weathering bench today as I need to finish up a couple more diesels. It will be nice to get them out. My brother called this morning at his midnight my 5AM, thinking I am awake at that time. Told him no I am waking later, like 6-6:30 but Terry is awake at 5! Anyway, he is gathering the stuff for his move before his house sale next week. Asked if I wanted all my items I sent over for the planned month we were going to be there in September. Told him no when Terry is there she will move it to storage. I had a case of Aurora Miniature boxcars sent over, a compressor and a bunch of paint. I needed something to keep me busy. Terry’s plan is to fly over next Wednesday.

The daughter and her best friend are flying with Terry next week. Obviously with the issues Maui is having their construction trades are a mess. The painting service companies the brother has used are not responding so the 2 former interior designers and painting contractors partners are heading over to paint! I’m staying here helping the SIL watch the 2 grandkids.

Got into my stash of turnouts last night, and realized many of them are not DCC friendly, so they will be my next workbench project. This is what I get for collection Shinohara turnouts when I could over the years. It was kinda fun opening all those brown boxes to see what I had! I did watch a few videos on the method, so it doesn't look that bad!

Chad, the house is coming along, sorry to hear of the computer issues. I'm afraid I'll be doing that again soon as my 64 bit machine is approaching 8 years of age.

I didn't play much basketball. I was accustomed to being a talented player. Basketball was not my best sport. I was only an above average defender and rebounder, but I was inconsistent offensively. The last organized basketball game I played was the 11-13 league. I wrestled one year in high school. Oddly enough of the dozens of teams I played on, baseball, football, and basketball. When I was 13, I won my only championship trophy, playing basketball! I never won another championship trophy, not even as a manager/coach.

To answer your question, I did play a few future NBA players, David Wingate, Reggie Williams, and a game with Muggsy Bouges. Little Muggsy was not yet in high school, but he was already a magician with a basketball and the little guy could jump! When I played football at Lake Clifton high school some of my teammates liked to meet on weekends to play pickup basketball with guys from Dunbar high school. I played with them a few times. Basketball in east Baltimore was a tight knit group. Lake Clifton and Dunbar were rivals, but not on the weekends. I was always welcome, but I usually had other things to do. Injuries cut my playing days short in high school and took the wind out of my sails for a while.
 


Computer update: I got it working after running a system "disk first aid" on the boot partition. That magically freed up a bunch of space and all is working just fine.

House wise I got a text that the roofers expected the steel guys to be there this morning to re-do the mis-sized steel that they need to finish. Have not been up there yet to check. Son and I need to finish removing the 1/2" to 5/8" from the last two high up windows so the window people can get those windows in. One is up high and needs scaffolding -- the other is at the same height but part of the "loft" so we can stand and work on it. I also talked to a gypcrete guy yesterday and need to send him more info. Also trying to arrange someone for drilling the geothermal shafts. The guy who was supposed to has been flaky and not communicating much (probably swamped) so trhe geothermal engineering company that designed it is helping me get a replacement.
 
Growing up in Baltimore I learned early winning championships is hard!

I watched the 13-1 heavily favored Baltimore Colts lose to the 17-point underdog Jets in Super Bowl III 16-7. I must give Webb Eubank the credit. He had a perfect game plan for my Colts. And his team executed it to near perfection. Forget Namath, Webb was the real MVP! Only fitting I suppose after the Colts fired Webb.

The dominate 1969 Baltimore Orioles finish 19 games ahead of the rest of the Eastern Division 109-53. Only to lose the world series to the New York Mets in five games. The Mets played the best four games of their season in that series.

In 1971 the Baltimore Bullets finally get past the New York Knicks in the playoffs. Only to lose four straight games to the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals!

Later in 1971 the Orioles with four twenty game winners lose the world series to Roberto Clemente and the Pirates in seven games! Take Clemente out and the Orioles would have won in four, but that was not how it was.

Fortunately, the Orioles did win the 1970 world series and the Colts won Super Bowl V. But the pain of those losses will never be forgotten. The Baltimore Bullets never came close again before moving to Washington (Landover).

As I was telling Snowman, of all the years I played sports, I only won one championship trophy, in basketball no less. I was a talented player in my day (to be honest, that is an understatement, but nobody likes a braggart). Football came easy to me. Baseball was my first love and my best game. Basketball was something to do in between.

The closest I ever came to winning a championship in baseball was in Babe Ruth league. It was a double elimination tournament. We won the winners bracket only to lose the first "final" game to the losers. Our best pitcher got lit up like a Christmas tree for the first and only time that season.

The next game is the deciding game. Bottom of the seventh (last inning), we were down 3-4 with runners on first and third and one out. Our #2 hitter was up. I'm on deck, I see the sign go out for a bunt. I think to myself "great, I'll come up with the winning run on second, done deal!".

Not remembering "winning championships is hard". The bunt drops almost straight down, the hitter thought it was foul. The catcher springs up, picks it up on one bounce, tags the runner coming home (dumb ass) then tags the hitter still standing in the batter's box (dumb ass #2). Double play, game over, we lost. I still think the ball bounced up out of the batter's box. All that matters is what the umpire thought.

Winning Championships is hard in any league or any sport.
 
Back in 1984, I participated in a volleyball marathon that lasted 84 hours. We got in the Guiness Book of World Records, having shattered the former record by something like 6 hours or more.

It lasted a year until the next book came out, lol.

We could rest 5 minutes per hour. Our longest break came after a 12-hour non-stop run... so we had built up an hour break. This was probably around the 78 hour mark... I took a short nap and never woke up... I was on my feet, but wasn't really conscious. People were moving me around when it was time to rotate...

Sleep deprivation... I ended up hallucinating (more like dreaming while semi conscious). The fraternity house we lived in had a washing machine that had a lint catcher that was a white plastic mesh-like basket that would trap lint as water was poured into it from teh top.

Well... I "dreamed" that we were in that washing machine, and teh volleyball was lint that we were all trying to push up into the lint catching basket...

Eventually, they used the scoreboard as a countdown timer to the end of our marathon. I sort of "came to" when it clicked in my head that we were about to be done... I suppose it was adrenaline.

We started the marathon mid day Thursday, and finished Sunday night around 9:00PM... We all went back to the frat house for a brief celebration. I had 2 beers, then crawled into bed... Probably around 9:45PM or maybe 10:00Pm Sunday evening. I woke up Tuesday afternoon.

I was thinking of purchasing one of those Canon printers. They have great reviews and are $100.00 off at Best Buy. I did not buy one because after reading the specs it was listed as "wireless" and not "wireless and wired" as were some of the others. I prefer to hard wire everything when I can as I have had problems with wireless electronics. I have a wired keyboard and mouse because the wireless crap kept giving me aggravation.
I hope yours works well. With the laser printer you can print decals with the correct paper.

Afternoon All,

Started out today with a quick trip to the VA since it was a follow up about my rash and itching and I didn't need to see the doc. I was back home by 9:30 am. After breakfast I did several chores then vegged out. Tomorrow I'm dedicating my time to installing fencing around the pasture. The storm has moved further west from us, but I don't know if we'll lose power or not. Sometimes we do and sometimes we don't.

Hughie- Nice scene.

Chad- I would have never figured the computer out. Your new house looks like a mansion!

Joe- Pictures/videos? Remember if we don't see it, it hasn't happened! :D

Willie- Nice job on the fencing. I hope the printer is worth the hassle setting it up.

Troy- That is pretty darn cool looking.

Louis- Neat photo. I really like the super elevation.

So far it's working well after I got it working. In the past, I have had them hard-wired to the desktop computer and wireless through the router for wife's laptop and tablet. The last one I just went wireless all the way since the phone company gave us a new state of the art router when we switched over to fiber-optic service. Thanks to a government grant, the fiber-optic installation in our very rural area was free along with the router. This was only to existing landline customers. I have neighbors who ditched the landline in the early 2000's who ended up paying for the fiber-optic installation.
