A baseball question:

If a batter is up, with one out, two runners on, and let’s say the batter has a strike or two already, and the two runners try a double steal and both get tagged out. Does the batter get to bat all over again the next time his team is at bat or does he have to wait for his turn all over again? (i.e. go to the end of the line.)
Even I know that one. As Bruette said, the batter has not completed his at-bat, so he starts over again the next inning.

Now, and as a non-baseball peep, but with a B-in-law who is, and a nephew who is too...(they both are NYY fans, go figure), I still do appreciate good baseball when I see it.

Going all Youtube now, and re the Eastwood movie "Trouble With the Curve," we can all appreciate the facedown scene in the tryout. And I love it myself.

But the scene where Rodrigo throws that curve still just blows me away. As a layman. As a true student of the game it might leave you thinking..."meh. So what? Just a Hollywood moment."

But I love the curve break on that ball, and I think it's a great angle on the camera:

@2:14-2:17 That pitch sails up and up...until it crosses the trunk of the thick tree and then it suddenly just dives DOWN. As a layman, that's a curve, at least to me, IMO.

We now return you baseball aficionados to your regularly conversational channel....

Good morning all. A sunny day!!!
A few household jobs to do today. They should keep me busy.

Paddle Steamer 'Waverley' at Brodick, Isle of Arran.

Welp, Howdy there internet neigbhors, and those with heat warnings

Indiana is about to join you. We've just had a delightful week of almost sweater-weather (jumper weather for those across the pond). Now we descend into the month-long autumn tease interspersed with Hell's Front Porch weather.

This week, we travel to Hades... Not quite to TX or Florida level, but getting there. May sleep in the basement for a few nights.

Screen Shot 2023-08-20 at 8.01.21 AM.png

Yesterday, after the pork butt (Pulled pork with Sweet Baby Ray's Honey BBQ sauce, cornbread, and some veggies), wife and I headed over to the cluhouse parking lot for the free neighborhood concert.

Art-V.jpg

The guy on keyboard, and one of the singers (I believe the one in pink) live in our condo complex.... and a local resident gave a generous donation to help fund their "ART-V" big bus with stage back during the pandemic. So we get treated to three concerts from them each summer. The group gives music lessons to underprivileged kids. Their community concerts help raise awareness of their mission, and generate some donations to fund their program (and pay for gas for the traveling big bus.)

I'm in the midst of getting some stuff off the 3D resin printer and arguing with supports. Not sure if it's the printer light/screen in its dying gasps, or if I'm not putting enough supports on the models. I'm back to cleaning out the vat every few prints.

Pics later once the current project is finally achieved.

Good morning Worldwide modelers, 3-d printers, baseball questioners and the responders. Willie, news to me about the cotton in the eyes, I didn’t get that treatment.

Like Troy who is a neighbor only 315 miles East of me, we have heat adversities up! Starting at 11AM
IMG_1033.png

92f degrees to me just shouldn’t warrant a heat advisory. Is this part of the dumbing down of the population?

I have a weathering client who is huge into modeling intermodal. I have done 3 stack trains for him of 30 cars each in the last 18 months and over 300 containers for him in the last 6 months. I posted 14 containers I started for myself on Friday and completed them yesterday. I posted them on my layout FB page. He texted said please call him. I did. He asked why I’ve never done his containers like I did my own that I posted? Told him why and basically it was following his requests. Also, my 14 I hand brushed instead of air brushed. He then offered to buy my 14. I said nope, (so proud) and then he made another offer and I collapsed being the weakling I can be. Plus his daughter will drop off 25 more containers today for me to do and 14 more to replace mine. The replacements were the clincher!

I started a quest yesterday for Amazon prime 53’ containers and had come up blank. I think it’s one of those things where Amazon won’t license them for modeling. So then the quest turned into finding similar containers either undecorated or white where I can easily strip the lettering and use the white as a primer! Found these

IMG_1034.png

So yes, I ordered. They look like knockoffs of the Walthers Scenemaster containers and include the back door details. I had already found decals for the containers. Now to find the colors to match the Amazon containers!

Good Morning All. Clear and a much cooler 77° here this morning. Expecting 109° today. While I only saw 105° yesterday, a Weather Underground station about 8 miles south recorded 110°. The thermometer at the station around the corner is still on the fritz, and is totally unreliable for comparisons; he's currently showing 140°! Still no relief in the ten day forecast, and no rain. Even the 3% chance for Tuesday has now been removed, not that there was any chance in hell that it was going to happen anyway. Now there is an 8% chance for noon Thursday.

Prior to yesterday's warm-up, I was able to do a little yardwork. There's been a few smaller dead branches falling off the trees in the windrow along the road. I gathered them all up. While out, one of the neighbor ladies stopped by and paid me for the next four months of using my trash dumpster. She must have gotten a raise or a bonus at work. She and another neighbor coop to use the dumpster located on my property, and it saves us all some money. Now I can visit the LHS since I haven't visited since before Memorial Day, and I need some paints and styrene shapes. I actually acquire enough on every visit to have to use the AMEX card for half the total!

Ran the dishwasher overnight, so that is staring at me this morning, and being Sunday, it's bed linen washing day here on the estate. I am not supposed to do the regular wash any more since I don't separate dark from light. It never mattered for years until a couple of months ago and I don't question why. And no, I didn't wash any new dark clothes that might have bled over.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I touched up the paint on the reefer truck, not very well per pictures. Applied decals and planted it temporarily.
IMG_0242.JPG

Still not truly happy about the windows.
IMG_0245.JPG

Then I planted trees in front of the farmhouse and a few more saplings next to the right of way.
IMG_0247.JPG

Hmmmh! Did part of my tree fall off? I'll need to check it out this afternoon.
IMG_0248.JPG

Still need weeds, but I feel like running trains today.

Sherrel - How about a hurricane Hillary update from the center of action, if you're still there.
Joe - I have tried light blue on the windshields of the Magnuson vehicles in the past, but it just didn't seem right, so I switched to the silver.
Todd - Some great looking cars there, but I didn't see Chet and his '59 Impala.
Curt - Get well soon. You're more stubborn than I am, by now my wife would have dragged me to a doctor.
Troy - That forecast that you posted this morning looks like our typical Christmas week one!

Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin is 75 years old today.
Everybody have a great day and go to the church of your choice.

Good Morning All!

55F @ 51% and still smokey. Should get to 85F around 1700.

Willie: Have not heard from Chet. Think his Impala is still stored in/near Gallatin Gateway.

Anyway, have a question for y'all ... anybody installed a K&N intake filter? Know the HP and torque will rise - what about fuel economy? Wondering minds just need to know.

Later!

Actually I believe that he told me that it was on display at a dealership in Libby, but I don't recall if he mentioned which one. I don't think that it is an official Chevrolet dealership.
All of those cars probably drove by his front door.
Willie: Ya, seem to remember him saying something like that. We do not have an 'Official' Chev dealer, but what was left over from one that existed years ago. They do have a few classic cars in the showroom - need to check next time down there.

Chet's place is probably a mile from the car show. He could have seen a few doing the 'side streets' though.

Be VERY careful with the K&N air filter. The are coated with oil in the filter media. Too much oil can get drawn into the air flow and collect in the mass air flow sensor. This oil film can collect inside the sensor causing it to fail.
they are great filters, but I would recommend you let the filter sit 24 hours after the initial oiling, and after cleaning and re-oil in the filter. I will even wrap mine in several layers of paper towels while they are sitting to try to draw out any excess oil.
I had one on my old impala that works very well, and I also have one on the four-wheel-drive S 10 in conjunction with a cold air intake. It did tend to wake up the throttle response on the S 10, as the filterable amount of air who is almost doubled.

Greetings from Hurricane Alley!
We started getting rain after midnight and it just slacked off down to a sprinkle at 6 am. Not a heavy rain but steady. I did not put out my "bucket", so not sure how much we received. Maybe a half inch? I just heard on the telly that evacuation warnings have been issued for Beaumont, Banning, and Hemet which is just north of here; I don't see the need for it, but it seems that the place is "going bonkers" over this event - not that they have far to go as they are all bonkers to begin with! Looking at the radar it seems that the higher elevations (high desert communities), Cajon Pass and mountains surrounding L.A. seems to be where the heavier rain and winds are located.
OK, just saw that the rainfall for us here is 0.21 inch as opposed to Mexicali which has recorded 3.65 inches
Current forecast locally is for 71 going to 83 with showers and mostly cloudy.

I loved that movie: 'Trouble with the curve', as well as all of
Eastwood's movies.

Thanks Karl:
Had one on our F350 7.3L and had to watch the oil in/on the filter when cleaning and re-oiling. Have no idea if fuel economy increased cuz I got it that way, but power sure did as long as it was clean. In other words I could tell when it was time to clean/oil again.

From more reading, the air temp coming into the manifold is lower with the K&N, vs factory stuff and better flow than factory. Means the air/fuel ratio can hold more fuel with the colder air mixture and that is what increases HP and Torque. More HP means it takes less time in the 'power band' to get to cruising speed. Fuel economy should follow somewhat just because of that. Heck if I even get 1% that would be good. Expedition is guessed at 18 - 20 maybe, 1% would be slightly under a mile per gallon which should make a difference over time. This is pretty much exactly what a turbo or blower does; of course at a lower flow level. We will see!

I read yesterday that Death Valley might flood if there is more than 2" of rain there. I know that parts of it have flooded in the recent past. Might get interesting!

If you're wondering why California panics when a hurricane comes near... it's because they don't usually get that far north. Tropical storms don't usually get that far north because the water temps cool off around California, keep the storms south. But increasingly warmer temps south of there give storms extra energy and they can go farther north.

When I was a docent on the SaMo pier, we talked about the storms of 1983... One hit in Jan, waves about 12 feet over sea level. The lower deck of the pier (yes, it had a lower deck back then), was only about 8 ft above high tide. You can do the math. It took out the LifeGuard HQ at the end of the pier, which is on video collapsing with very high surf:

The city brought a crane out to do the demolition, so rebuilding could begin. Crews got most of the way done by the end of March. But another storm was forecast.

The city engineer ran down to the pier (it's 1983, no cell phones) and told the demolition crew to get the crane off the pier ( as in go back 1600 ft to the shore end)

The operators pulled it back a little, but at quitting time, they left it there.

I got to speak with a city Lifeguard that was on duty that night. Normally, LG HQ was on the pierat the far West end... but they were now off to the south side of the pier in one of the "huts" the lifeguards had along the beach front. He said the storm was NASTY. About midnight the heard a HUGE wave break, but it was too dark and rainy to see much. A short while later, they started hearing a boom or thunk every time a wave rolled in.

They next morning, they opened the hut at daybreak and saw most of the west end of the pier (the long skinny part) piled up along the beach in pieces.

The wave, estimated at about 30ft, took the crane off the pier, and it was slammed into the pier pilings with each successive wave. What the ocean didn't do on its own, the crane helped.

Here's an aerial shot of the pier after reconstruction was well underway. Only about a hundred feet of the "Looff" pier (the long part) was left after the waves and crane had their way on March 30-April 1...

in 1983, CA had not one, but two storms make it that far north.

Desert living 101 says if it rains a lot in the higher elevations, it will flood the lower elevations. Remember the first rule of plumbing: Hot on the left, cold on the right, and poop runs downhill.
