Slept a good 4 hours this afternoon - still feel lousy, listless, and blazay. ... and the throat still hurts a fair bit!
If not any better in the morning - I will head out for the clinic.

TOM - Not much difference in cream-of-wheat and grits - about the same consistency - one wheat - one corn.
"Anyway hope you feel better soon." Thanks!
Someone might need or want Malt-O-Meal. "Good stuff, Maynard...".

I watched the end of the Ravens 20, Eagles 19, preseason game. As I followed the end of the Orioles 1, Mariners 0 game online. It's always good when my teams win. It's not the end of the world if they lose. There is always another game or season.

The Ravens extended their preseason winning streak to twenty-four games. It's meaningless, but better then losing twenty-four straight games. The Orioles ended the Mariners eight game winning streak.

My view on sports, I focus on the best and I ignore the rest. I only wish the media would too. The only headlines and stories should come from the playing of the game. The rest, I think of it as kids acting out for attention. Ignore them and they will stop.

I once played sports at a remarkably elevated level. It was short lived, but true. I played baseball and football and I wrestled. It was fun being the "big fish in a little pond". Even after I was no longer the "big fish" I continued to play for the love of playing. I played for more than 25 years. I even found time to play basketball for two seasons and softball for one season. My dreams of playing in a "big pond" ended before I was seventeen, but I never thought of not playing. The last few years I was nothing more than a part-time player. My final year I was a pinch hitter with only eight at bats., and I still loved it! My last base hit was as exhilarating as my first hit in little league. My last hit was a single to the right center gap. It could have been a triple, at least a double, but I could no longer run. Standing on first I knew the end was near.

After I retired from playing, I took up coaching youth sports with my kids and later my grandsons. I enjoyed that as much if not more than playing. Winning was never my goal in coaching. I wanted to instill a love of the game in my players. I hoped they would find as much enjoyment in sports as I had, playing, or watching.

If I did my job preparing my players and helping them be the best they could be, winning takes care of itself. My focus as a coach was on sportsmanship. I taught them to respect the game and to have fun. "Tuck in your shirt, don't wear your hat backwards. We can at least look like a baseball team!" I insisted my teams be like a family, be nice to each other and never give up!

For me, every player was important. Kids that seldom get a hit or star players. They were all equal to me. My challenge was to make sure they all had fun. I remember one little fella. He did not yet have enough strength to swing the bat. His mom made him play; he did not want to. The second week of the season his mom came to me and said "I don't know what you do, but now he can't wait to come. He gets ready and rushes me!" I always had 8am practices and they were always late. All I did was instruct my coaches to get the rest of the players doing drills and infield practice. As he and I sat on the bench eating pop tarts and talking about anything. After he had his breakfast, he enthusiastically worked hard at practice. Throughout practice I found time to talk with him. I enjoyed talking to him as much as he enjoyed talking to me. He was remarkably smart!

Winning is not easy and is never guaranteed, but we can control how we play. Do your best and except the outcome with dignity. When we won, I gave my players all the credit. When we lost, I told them it was my fault for not having them prepared. My teams won over 60% of our games and we always played deep into the playoffs. I only had one losing season as a coach (5-11 in the regular season, everybody makes the playoffs) Even that season we made it to the semi-finals! How you play the game matters.

Of all the games I played and coached my greatest memory is not of the only championship team I played on. My greatest memory is from the fifth inning of a little league game I was coaching. We were down by twenty-four runs. (I never accepted the "slaughter rule") As we were coming to bat in the top of the sixth (final Inning) my catcher asked me "Coach Lou, if we tie the game can somebody else catch? I'm getting tired" I answered "of course!" That proved my team never gave up!

After being involved in sports for almost fifty years, now I can't play, coach, or even attend a game. But I still love watching it on my TV! I especially enjoy highly contested games played at the highest level. Sports are an important part of who I am. They always have been and God willing, they always will be. Thank God for my DVR!

I understand and respect how others feel concerning the "extracurricular stupidity" of some athletes. All I ask is you respect how I feel.

I enjoy "the human drama of athletic competition."

I guess I'm the only one that remembers May-po. They used sports figures in their advertising, and I still remember Gil Hodges proclaiming "I want my May-po!".

As for Cream-O-Wheat, you couldn't run fast enough to give me that stuff, or grits. I'll eat oatmeal if I have to, but those should only be used to punish small children.

Greetings from the land of poutine!

I'm happy to say I've had my own first dish of the cheesy, gravy-covered fries.

So far, I'm losing every game I've played in the tournament. But, I'm still in single digits of the number of games I've played with this ruleset. I expect to lose two more games today. The wooden spoon is soooooo close to my grasp...

Wife is set to go see the "castle" here in Hamilton while I game. She's on a quest to see the waterfalls in and around the city, but that requires using muddy walking trails. She's hoping today will be a bit dryer and won't clog her shoes too much. Yesterday, she was walking right after a downpour, so she ended up on paved paths near the harbor.

Good morning from a cool place in WIsconsin. 61f degrees now maybe 74 later with a possible rain storm thrown in. I ran the predictive radar animation and the storm seems to split a few miles west of us leaving us dry. I will take any rain.

Fries with ketchup! Hot dogs with mustard! Se. , never mind, I wandered…

We have the granddaughter from around 10-2, but I doubt we will be in the pool today. But the pool temperature is 84 right now so it will depend on what if any storm we get. I used to love being in the pool while It rained. Wow, haven’t done that in years!

Terry was happy with her Packers the other night. I saw not a play. Seems the Brewers are playing pollytics not baseball. They are not getting their way with additional stadium funding and have threaten Nashville and some other places they can move to. Let them!

I did a buy now this morning on EBay. Not a crazy price on a Boley Lineman’s truck. Got a 2AM text message with picture of the item from a client I had weathered a bunch of MOW equipment for. $32 with shipping and tax. I will weather it up and give him a price and if he passes on to EBay or FB it will go.

I purchased 4 more sulfur cars that I really don’t need and most likely cannot weather until after Xmas but the deal was spectacular. They showed before noon Saturday. Last evening about 7:30 the door bell rang. Our delivery folks the USPS, UPS and the Amazon people always ring the buzzer at the drop off point or front door. Some of my track I ordered that I “specifically“ said no back orders on the instructions showed up. 180’ of 342’ ordered.

enjoy the day

Good Morning All. Perfectly clear and 85°, supposed to get to 108° today, but it only made it to 106° yesterday. Mid-90's is still the forecast for tomorrow and Tuesday. Earlier this morning, (between 0330 and 0430 CDT), I spent on a pool float looking at the Perseid meteor shower. The moon stayed out of the way until about 0445. Good views this year although not as active (from my vantage point) as some past years. Last year was a dud because of the full moon. Good viewing for a few more days, mostly between 0100 and 0500, then it fades away until next August.

Yesterday morning I mowed again for the first time in a few weeks. I got the area east and north of the train shed, and all along the west side diversion ditch separating the hay field from the yard. That area is commonly referred to as my "back 40", even though it is nowhere near 40 acres. The dust wasn't as bad as expected, helped somewhat by the rain earlier in the week. Quite a scare when something blew around and behind my safety glasses and landed in the eye that I just had cataract surgery on. Happened just as I finished up and was parking the tractor. Came in and my wife liberally doused it with eye drops and flushed it out before any damage was done. Terrible temptation to rub it which I am supposed to avoid for another 10 days or so. I have a pair of actual goggles somewhere that I guess i will look for.

Out in the train shed yesterday, I just added ground cover to the farm.

I'm trying to decide on the driveway pattern before adding any grass to the "home" side of the fence.

Still playing with the arrangement of outbuildings, the corn crib has been eliminated as overkill.
IMG_0171.JPG

The windmill location is still in question.
Since I am a gardener, I will be adding a garden as well. Here's the start, as I split a piece of corrugated cardboard to attain the "furrowed row" look.
IMG_0172.JPG

Some cleanup is needed before I paint it to look like the surrounding ground.
After all of this (not much), I decided to run trains for a while before getting into the pool again before I grilled T-bones for supper.

Everybody have a great Sunday. Stay cool if you live in Texas.

Good morning. Happy Sunday! 80° and sunny, going to 88°

When Maypo was first offered, it was heavily marketed TV. I drove my mom nuts trying to find someone who sold it, as the neighborhood grocerys didn't carry it. When mom finally found it at a "Super Market", and served Maypo for Breakfast, it was worse tasting than oat meal. 🤢 Since I went on the Low sodium - heart healthy diet, I eat much more oatmeal, shredded wheat and raisin bran than I could have ever imagined, while avoiding all the unhealthy "good stuff" like gravy fries, and other delicacy. Maypo is still on the shelf in the cereal aisle at ShopRite. I will not even consider it.

The Amazin Mets, began the season with the best team Money could buy. Cohen out spent the Yankees, Dodgers and everyone else in baseball. For a high finance guy, it was the worst investment anyone could make. Much to the surprise of the over compensated past prime performers, heads began to roll at the trade deadline, and more will roll after the season mercifully ends. Under performers, like Pete Alonzo are on notice, and based on their post deadline play, might be on the block. New Manager and coaching staff, new GM are definitely strong possibilities. A complete turnover of pitchers and on field performers is quite likely. Cohen wants a winner, and he has the money and will spend it to get what he wants. Losing 03 - 21 followed by 0 - 6, is a team that has given up.

Meanwhile, in da Bronx, Stinebrenner, (Hank), has hinted that manager Aaron Boone is not going to return, but he is loyal to his GM, Brian Cashman...Yo Hank, Cashman is the reason ya can't win the big one...get rid of da bum! Your super star is riding the Injured list, and the rest of da bums are coasting. Even if they come to life and win a wild card slot, they ain't going any where.
Open your eyes, Hank. Spend some time in da Bronx, where it's cooler than Tampa. Might help your brain function.

Meanwhile, the (Jersey ?), Jets, beat Carolina, 27 - 0. Do not get excited folks, this is pre season. We all know what happens to the Jets once the regular season starts... This is one of two teams that play in Bergen County, NJ, and have for Decades now. yet they both play under the banner of New York. This is mostly at the insistence of the Television Networks, as technically, New Jersey does not have a Television market. The Jets last two owners, Leon Hess, (Hess Oil), and current owner Woodie Johnson, (Johnson & Johnson), are both Jersey born, and bred, and are Jersey residents. When Woodie Johnson proposed a new Football Stadium on top of the Long Island RR Westside Coach yard, NY luminaries, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Donald Trump, and Jimmy Dolan, (owner of the Rangers, Nicks and Madison Square Garden), and the usual NIMBY Preservationist and developers vigorously opposed the Idea, and told Johnson to keep his team in Jersey. So, New York doesn't want them, or the Giants, but the Giants have always been associated with NYC, and have been owned by the Mara family, for generations, so they get grandfathered. Most of the Giant's fan base is from New York, while the bulk of the Jets fan base is from Jersey.

Guess when you come down to it, Sports, Big Money, and Media, are all intertwined with Politics and Politicians, so there is more activism tolerated from on field performers, than there would be from other employers in other industry.
