I'm going to miss my 2-channel stereo. I have always been a closet audiophile, and have enjoyed this particular stereo for almost 30 years.

I love great sounding music, and especially like a wide sound stage, so separation of left & right channels is huge.

The best way to accomplish that is to have separate mono-block amplifiers for each channel. That can get expensive, so the next best thing is a "dual mono-block" amplifier that has 2 amplifiers in one cabinet that may share some minor components. That's what the B&K EX4420 is... A really nice solid state dual mono-block amplifier. B&K is widely regarded as some of the best audio components for a budget-minded audiophile. They have a very warm, tube-like, sound, and can produce 200 watts per channel at 4 ohm.

My audiophile system on a budget:
B&K Components EX4420 amplifier
B&K Components PT5 Preamp / Tuner
Balanced Pair connectors
Paradigm Signature S2 speakers
Paradigm subwoofer

All in, about $2,000 for a system that sounds as good as many that might cost 3-times as much.

Jeff - - - I am looking hard at the N3IX QuadLN_S servo controllers for turnouts. Looking at the manual, seems that they really push JMRI for setting up and all. I am not a JMRI guy, so will be quite interested in your experience and tutelage. Buying a cheap laptop is not a bad idea. I also need to update the firmware for my DIgitrax products including the DCS52 Zephyr (which has a USB port).

My USB interface for the NCE PowerCab should be here later this week. Not sure when I'll have time to try it out. Although, I have been anticipating this for a while, so I'm sure I'll carve out some time, much to my wife's dismay.

So far, I'm a fan of the Sonos Move. It's loud enough to be useful outside, and quite portable. Not as loud as I'd like, but it will do, and my neighbors, even though they are a few hundred yards away, will be happier without me being able to play my music too loud, lol.

I already have plans for 3 additional Sonos One's

Hello again,

Willie: Not so much here about welfare queens, although there are some. It mostly breaks down to pay. Wife could earn more working at Walmart, but that has it's own issues. Even the state workforce centers are having issues getting people in the door's looking for work. As afr as the convection vs. Air Fryer, there isn't really a difference. The air fryer is a bit more concentrated, so don't you have to heat the whole oven (or house). We have an older traditional oven, but have a convection toaster oven\air fryer.

As a non POA for my mom, I've been tasked to take her to get new hearing aids. Trying to get people to do things and get information I need to accomplish this it a real PITA. Not looking forward to Medicare...

Good morning, all! It is currently raining with showers predicted off and on throughout the day. Forecast for the week has a chance of rain every day, and temps in the high 80"s. We have had some rain the last few days and the grass is again in full bloom, back to mowing once a week.
Gas - filled up the truck, $3.07. I suspect price will go up as we approach Labor Day.

Saga
Ordered Keystone Mill from Midwest Models. It was a gift for my birthday (yesterday)
Kit arrived, opened, noted parts missing
Contacted Midwest, they gave me the number for the manufacturer.
Contacted the manufacturer about missing parts. They said it wasn't wood, but cardstock and I should go look again
Sent maker photo of the contents of the box, no cardstock parts
Manufacturer send the 2 cards/carriers. While I compared cards to direction sheet, one card was missing 4 cut outs.
Contacted maker, sent photo with check marks on the direction sheet and arrow pointing to the blank area on the card.
Maker wasn't sure how that happened but would send a new one out the next day.
New card arrived. Wrong card. I had assumed they looked at the photo, was the blank area and send that card.
Sent new photo with just the card missing the cut outs. Now we are waiting.

I did run a switching operation yesterday.

As Guy might say, "I want to through down this picture" before I go. B&M 1212 switching at Pickham's.

I could not watch SMokey and the Bandit, seemed too stupid for me. I get that reaction to many shows now, some even that I used to watch. Not sure what happened that changed my tastes
Dave: Smokey & the Bandit was absurd, but that was what made the movie so popular. It was loaded with all sorts of surprise cameo appearances for my amusement. Having said that, I doubt that I could sit through it again... The old shows...I don't know why I watched them. Perhaps when they were on once each week, they were entertainment or at least a time filler. Now with all the binge channels on TV, you can watch 5 years worth in a couple of days, and each time you see the same show for the 7th time, you start picking it apart.

Nice progress on your layout.

I can watch a lot of old shows over and over. Both TV and movies. Things like "Kelly's Heroes" etc. Today you have to sift through whatever show and see what political position they are trying to indoctrinate you with or whatever. There is no longer entertainment for entertainments sense.

Old shows may be "absurd", but that is why they were entertaining.

Whether it is "Hogan's Heroes", "A-team", "Knight Rider", or anything else or "Smokey and the Bandit", "Kelly's Heroes", etc.

No need to worry, Medicare doesn't pay for hearing aids. Some of those fancy expensive supplemental plans that Joe Namath is trying to sell might.

Good morning. Going to make a quick appearance today. My daughter and her family were here visiting for a week and I am worn out.
Went to Glacier Park which is just over 2 hours away. I was closer to Yellowstone at my old place. Stayed at a hotel in East Glacier so we would have better light for photos. The grand kids enjoyed the park a lot but we stopped at the Hungry Horse Amusement center in Hungry Horse, MT which thrilled the kids. I hijacked a Google Earth photo of the place. They have a huge maze that took some of them a long time to get through. Myself and one grandson got through quickly and were turning laps at the go cart track by the time the others found their way out. There's also miniature golf and swimming but the temperatures were so hot we retreated to the cars and headed back to Libby.

The next day we went to Columbia Falls where there is a great water park. My daughter remembered going there when she was a kid. This really wore the kids out. With the high temperatures, the water was great. The kids talked me into going down the 60 foot tall slide, but two of them chickened out. Saw then climbing down thee stairs when I was at the bottom.Wish I had pictures. I had forgotten my phone when we went to Glacier and purposely left it in the car at the water slides. They spent a day resting and with the high temperatures, in the 90's all week, they really weren't wanting to go outside. Went into town (I live in town, almost) and saw the car show they have every year. My Impala is still in Bozeman.

Did bring my phone to take a few photos of the walking bridge over the Kootenai River. This is just a few mile from town. All but one of us went over the bridge. Rogan has a fear of heights. Figured that I was getting too old for this crap. At 76, my balance and reflexes aren't quite what they used to be.

I'll have to come back and read through the posts to see what I missed while I was gone. Have to go to the grocery store and make a few other stops and want to get it done before it gets too hot.

Later

That particular storm passed south of me. My daughters in Richardson both reported 8"+, and my brother further east in Dallas near Mesquite reported 10". At the moment I have 1.9", but it looks like it will fall for another 2-3 hours. Dallas got rain yesterday where we did not get anything more than occasional sprinkles, so their ground was partially saturated before the overnight storm. They will have flash floods if they haven't already started.

Good Morning All. Light rain and 72°. The rain finally arrived here, two days late. It rained all day yesterday along and on both sides of the OK border, but it didn't start here until sometime after midnight last night. I currently have 1.4" in the rain gauge. High today at maybe 79° after 80° yesterday. The pool cooled down to 83° yesterday evening, slightly cooler than optimal but pleasant nonetheless. It's likely cooler right now - probably too cool to use today. The cloudiness will depart late Tuesday and warmup will begin Wednesday. 65 miles south in Dallas, they've received over 8" in many places. Both of my daughters had trouble going to and from school with the kids this morning. Their homes are wet but otherwise unscathed.
I'm excited as this rainfall could be enough to ensure a very reasonable second cutting of hay from my hay field. On the downside, this cool spell could cause my onions stored in the shed to begin sprouting.

After church yesterday, I canned more tomato sauce, all successful. I haven't had a canning failure since the beginning of June so all is good. Those from back then were just poured into a Ziploc and are stored in the freezer so no loss. The day itself was otherwise a lazy day with the hardest chore after canning being taking the trash out to the dumpster. We went out to eat at our favorite Italian restaurant after enjoying a dip in the pool.

Thanks for all of the reactions and comments to my relatively slow progress; Sherrel, Gary, Steve J, Karl, Joe, Tom O, OB Ken, Patrick, Rick, Hughie, Louis, Curt, Smudge, Mikey, James, Tom, Chad, Guy, George.

My visit out to the train shed yesterday was brief and all I did was run trains. I should be able to finish the fence around the gas station today. I can't locate my good combination square yet, so I didn't get to check that. I did check the level of the lower level of the layout and it is fine.
So back to the archives. Girls always seem to be popular, so here are a few, possibly with some repeats for Sherrel.

Sherrel - I know that you have posted Tom Holly pictures before. Is this the same person who is connected with the Texas Western Model Railroad Club in Ft Worth?
Tom O - I like Terry's suggestion regarding the propane tanks. On my layout, I don't have any "negative space" as I like switching too much. There are a few places where the engines of a through freight will be in one town, while the caboose is still in another town. However most people's field of view is not wide enough to be able to tell. Mine certainly isn't. I generally run 22-24 car train lengths for through trains, while locals are usually 5-7 cars.
Note that I hate apparel shopping worse than I hate eating fast foods.
Curt - I don't know if a shim would fix the problem. If you look at the uppermost wall, it fit's flush.
Steve J -

It won't be unless you try it. There's nothing wrong with going slow and getting it right. You gain skills by trying new things. I had projects over the years that I started and then laid down into storage for a year before resuming. There's nothing about this hobby that makes instant gratitude a requirement. That's not to say that some are pushing that idea.
Smudge - UK has not cornered the market on stupid drivers. I see plenty here.
James - Sorry that you wasted the rum. I'll buy you a drink if we ever get together!
Patrick - The more that you post about your wife's daycare center, the madder I get. If your area is like North Texas, part of the labor shortage is because they eliminated the work requirement for some welfare benefits.

So my burning question for today, what is the difference in the settings on our air-fryer between air-fry and convection bake??? Inquiring minds want to know.
Everybody have a great day. The rain here will keep me inside mostly.

Willie- I will be back in Texas again next year after my Alaska trip. I may take ya up on that Rum offer! As for the Air Fryer.....I dunno but I did a search on your query.

Last Friday my brother in law came down and and we, with my son for a small amount of time, spent the afternoon and evening until it got dark, taking down bracing, supports, etc. Saturday morning we met again to do a few more hours before our family trip to Lagoon (amusement park) was scheduled to start, but after an hour or so it started to rain and we weren't able to progress (and I was not able to get pics).

Most of the bracing support legs are down, some of the strongbacks (the stiff metal bit up against the wall), and a lot of the wood bnracing across seams etc is down, most of the doorways are clear of supports and other temporary wood bits, etc.

My brother in law and his contractor son in law are coming down this Wednesday for a day and I hope we get it all finished.

Supposedly the plumber is contacting me to set up the schedule to get the rough-in stuff done so we can get the slab poured. I am anxious to get the slab poured so we can get going on the wood framing of the basement layer and the first floor's subfloor.

My son works for UPS as a package handler and the Teamsters local that covers UPS had their family summer outing this past Saturday. He was able to get up to 6 tickets for Lagoon, a large local amusement park, for $40 each including a hamburger/hot dog meal. The normal Lagoon price is $85 with no meal. I had him get tickets for our family and he bought one for one of his friends and I got his last extra one (to get to 6) for my daughter's friend. My son drove himself up there in the morning and met his friend, who lives down in the Orem area and took the train (FrontRunner) up. My daughter had her first volleyball team practice at 11am so we had to wait for her before we could go up, and then I had a server issue with expired email certs (my little side hosting business) so I had to go home, while I was waiting at my parents' house for them to finish, as the volleyball was in the citgy where my parents' house is. I got home and tghe new certs installed and stopped at Walmart and made it back to my parents' house, where my wife and daighter and her friend were waiting. We finally got underway and got to the amusement before 3pm. Luckily it was open until 10pm. (We ended up leaving at 9pm because my daughter and friend were tired and we wanted to go to a Japanese dessert cafe in SLC on the way home that closed at 10pm).

The kids had a good time at the amusement park. Wife and I went on the sky ride but not much else. We walked around, sat on benches looking at the weirdos, etc.

The meal provided was hamburgers and hotdogs, chips, soda. It was sufficient for the likes of me. Wife was not so impressed.

All in all a successful Saturday despite the morning rain meaning we didn't get as much of the house stiff done taking stuff down.

I can watch a lot of old shows over and over. Both TV and movies. Things like "Kelly's Heroes" etc.
Chad, I agree! I have over a dozen streaming channels. Despite that I watch mostly old shows on broadcast TV.
Me TV, Grit and Story TV are my favorite channels.
I fall asleep almost every weeknight watching the "A-Team."
Kelly's Heroes is one of my all-time favorites! As is the old TV show "Laramie"
Saturday afternoons are great "Rawhide", "Wanted Dead or Alive" and more.
I recently watched "The Planet of the Apes", I enjoyed it.
I love Star Trek" and many others.
The remakes are great, but I still enjoy the Originals.
For me I think it is nostalgia. They take me back to simpler times. As my trains do.

Good afternoon. Just added up ALL the rainfall totals since Friday here at the homestead. .21” and the weather geeks are very happy. The official rainfall is still almost 4” short at the Dane Co. airport about 12 NE of us. I think we are more down then that here.

Been texting the son in Austin. His rain gauge since Friday has less then 1” total but a friend 2 miles east of him is over 10” in the same time frame. Even with the flooding and run off they are happy, Lake Travis is rising again.

Chet, great pictures but I am not crossing that bridge

hughie, reads like your have enough to create your own building, hope they get the next one right

Just got back from a late breakfast. Breakfast only place and served from 6 to 1. The 2nd time we have gone there since we moved into the area. Simple fare but oh so delicious.

As we are coming down the County Hwy to home we see a cop car (ok it’s a SUV) at the main gate to the property in the driveway and another car. Car called the cops as the car pulled into our gated driveway to turn around. Turned based on tire marks right through BOTH flower beds along each side of the drive. Flat tires because I have used but official State Of Wisconsin State Patrol stop sticks in each bed. Not the 1st time we have had this happen even though both flower beds and the gate are over 100’ from the road with a Private Driveway sign, passed 2 No trespassing signs and 1 if you can read this you are trespassing sign. Screaming lady when I rolled the window down to talk to the Deputy said she was going to sue us. Deputy asked if he could cite her for the trespassing and would we appear, of course was my reply. What a Life!
