Good evening. It's 83, and getting dark. My weekend consisted of limping around the house, trying not to make things worse, and do the bare minimum to keep the house inhabitable until I can move around better. Luckily, the tractor has an automatic transmission, so I didn't have to suffer the misery of trying to push the clutch pedal using the injured appendage while mowing the lawn.
In other news, one type of the dialysis solution for my wife appears to have become contaminated at some point during its production process. The fluid is supposed to be clear, but every box was filled with solution with a very noticeable yellow tinge. It kind of looks like somebody urinated in it. The supply company is coming out tomorrow to replace the solution, and pick up the bad stuff. It is all from the same lot number, so they're going to track it back to the source.

Morning all,

Appears all the work we did on Friday was a bust as we have to put all the old switches back in and send the new ones out for additional programming.

Makes me want to go home sick before anyone else gets here. I then had to walk from the back of City hall to the front as the key card readers are down on everything except the front door.

Pool is going down for the final time this next weekend. I've been putting about 3-400 gallons of water in it about every 2-3 days. The kids came over yesterday and let their dogs swim. No one was it it long, but at this point I've gotta wait for the chlorine to evaporate out before doing the big dump. I can't say I'll mis it, but I'm the one who has to keep it running and it was only used 3 maybe 4 times since it was put up in May.

For those saying old people can't throw things out. The wife and I have been doing just that over the past couple of years. If the kids want it, take it otherwise out it goes. I used to drag old computers and parts home, but a flood that put 7 feet of water in my storage building made me rethink it as I then had to pay to get the water damaged equipment hauled off. We still have stuff stored that belong to the kids, but now that the boy has moved out, it's getting easier to clear space.

Also a piece of history on the Esso\Standard Oil thing, Rockefeller was extremely unhappy about having his company broken up into the 34 "baby" companies by the government (much like AT&T). The breakup actually made him wealthier as he owned stock in each one.

Work beckons...BBL

Good morning from a soon to be very wet So. Central Wisconsin. I left the coushions out last night and they are too damp to sit on the south deck. The north side is fine. I can hear the thunder rumbling out to the northwest and per the weather app radar should hit the house about 7:30 or 13 minutes from now.

The girls are down at the stables but I figure they should be coming in anytime. This afternoon it should hit high 80’s with plenty of humidity. Great, the rain is early. I am heading into the house.

Ok, I am settled in listening to the thunder rolling and watching the rain hit the cement on the outside portion of the pool deck. No swimming today as it is stair climbing day. I am sore just thinking about it. Other then my lap swimming I have relaxed my exercise program and I can feel the difference.

enjoy your day

Good Morning All. Clear skies, full moon and 73° for this Monday morning. Supposed to warm up a bit after 94° yesterday, still waiting on our first triple-digit day though. I did do some more mowing on the southwest part of the yard yesterday afternoon before heading out of town. That's the hardest part as it's over the septic tank and lateral lines. Now back to the east side today to start the rotation over. While it's my largest section, it's also the easiest as it's 3/4 acre with straight runs and very few trees or obstructions to deal with.
Spent a pleasant afternoon with many relatives and my cousin from Brooklyn Long Island yesterday. My brother had an unmanned "Taco Truck" parked in the back yard for self service fajitas, rice, beans and other Mexican fixings; along with a Margarita machine. The beer and other spirits were all American or imported though. Neat setup.
Relatives who were hoarders - My grandmother may have been in the top five ever. First of all, my grandfather was not only the president of the local Knights of Columbus, but also head of the local Con-Ed electricians union back in Brooklyn during the 40's - 60's. As such, he normally got a lot of gift-wrapped bottles of distilled spirits for Christmas and other holidays from lots of people. My grandmother dutifully took them and stored them in a back closet in their brownstone. He died before her and when she finally passed, my mother and uncle found over 1000 bottles stashed in there. Also in her home, they found over $140K in cash in envelopes stashed in various places throughout the place. Many of the $50 & $100 bills were dated from the 20's through the 60's when it was customary for her and grandpa to get cash bonuses from their places of employment. Sadly mom threw out gramp's entire stash of baseball trading cards from the 00's through the 40's. Who knew??? I have other stories but I won't bore you today. Her bed was the only one in the home that was not stacked ceiling-high with stuff. Unlike some hoarders, there was no trash or otherwise objectionable material, even in the full basement.

Thanks for the many likes and comments regarding the Hydrocal structures posted yesterday; Steve J, Tom O, Guy, Christian, Karl, Alan, Hughie, Chad, Garry, Jaz, Curt, Joe, Sherrel, James, Patrick.

Just a simple two eggs over easy and a handful of bacon today Flo. Tell Mel to quit overcooking the bacon.

No activity in the train shed yesterday. Since I showed some Downtown Deco structures yesterday, how about some more today.

Alan - I am looking forward to your continuing progress on O'Neils.
Tom O - I personally have not had good luck with ScaleTrains couplers. I only have their engines though. For me, they don't stay coupled to Kadee #5's or # 148's. Since I always run double-headed lash-ups back to back, I change the front couplers to #148's out of the box, and leave the rear ones intact since they only ever couple to one another. Then to my surprise last week, I had a pair of SD45's uncouple from one another twice during a straight forward single direction run! It could have been some unevenness in the switches that they were going through as not all my trackwork is perfect. Did I just admit that???
Curt - Downtown Deco's structures are pretty neat in my opinion. I have five. While they're simple four walls and a roof construction, the detailing in the Hydrocal castings is superb. The key is in the painting though. I might spend two or three weeks at a couple of hours at a time painting one of their larger models. Rosa's took me longer than Ace Auto did.
Patrick - That's a lot of replacement water in the pool, there must still be a leak somewhere. Even in the worst summers, I only lost about 250 gallons a week from a 14,000 gallon pool every week from evaporation. This much milder summer, I have only added about 350 gallons all summer long. Some timely rains helped me along the way though. Wife and I both use it multiple times every day from before Memorial Day through at least Labor Day and sporadically until October most years.

Everyone have a great day.

Steve- That has happened to us all at some point. I don't know if you have ever put in a TT/RH and associated track before? I have put in two of them and I'll just say make sure everything is lined up as perfectly as you can get it (take your time) and test the heck out of it with every loco you own. I speak from experience.

Thanks Curt! Yes, I have already installed the three RH tracks and two flanking the RH. I agree, finesse and patience and extreme care were the orders of the day.

20210823_073540.jpg

And I do understand what you mean by every loco. I was testing with my shortest loco, and all working fine. Then went to the 2d longest. Mostly fine, but kept stalling on only one track into the RH. Filed, filed, filed some more. Then finally, a dim 0.03 Watt bulb began to illuminate in this pea-brain - - - "That's a mechanical interference." Took the loco off and checked the front coupler by the Kadee coupler gauge, and lo and behold, the angel of the LORD spaketh and saith, "the fronty air-hosie-thingy is begat to low. Applieth correction. Twice shalt thou correcteth, thrice shalt thou not correcteth ..."

Got out those cute li'l Kadee air hose pliers I invested in, and adjusted so that the air hoseie-thingy cleared the gauge and then the loco went to and fro just fine.

The got out My BLI Mikado with the Paragon 3 sound. It traversed good, just with a annoying number of stop/start on the sound. But I am coming to the conclusion that I don't really care for sound.

So long story to say, thanks for the advice and I will heed it and proceed with deliberate care. That should be this afternoon/evening so hopefully, this time tomorrow, I'll post either cheers of victory or tears of woe.

No train work yesterday gents. The weather was fantastic, so wife and I went to a nearby park and walked and sat by the lake. Then two wee drams on the front deck. Made our salads for dinner and went down to watch a movie. I suppose she deserves some time now and again, even if it interrupts the construction schedule. I have not yet heard the "train-widow" complaint, but am mindful ...

Enjoy the day, and Christian's breakfast! - - - - Steve J

Good Morning!
Not going to get much above 50F today, with the guessers threatening a couple inches of rain. I hope we get as much rain as it takes to put all the forest fires out.
There is never any threat of flooding where my house stands, as it's up on the hill sitting on pure sand. Down in the valley where the tracks are, though, it's a clay based flood zone. That's where the original town was built and new sub-divisions are still being built down there. It might be cheaper to buy a home down the hill, but I wouldn't even look in the valley for a place. I know all about flooded basements from when I was a kid.

I don't have much time again today. Just enough for a quick cup and then it's back to doing people's bidding. Today, I'll be doing some electrical maintenance in an apartment building that's lost power in 1/2 of a living unit. - Being a retired ex-contractor is so much fun. The next time I shut down a company to retire, I'll move to a different town where no one knows me.

Here's the photo for today. Another pre-pandemic re-run of a couple of SD40-2W's. I'm having to search through my files just to be able to post a photo. I hope to change that come the winter, when modeling season is here once more.

That's all the time I have today. Have a good one!

Guy: My father-in-law was a carpenter that semi-retired. He went to work on 2nd (3p-11P) shift for a local company at 54 and shoveled as much of that pay into a retirement plan as he could. He also worked odd construction jobs for folks in the area (and his sons-in-law) from 8a-12P) almost every day except Sunday. He was then almost full time carpentry again after he "retired". The brother-in-law was still getting requests after he passed at age 88. So you'll never be done... 🤣

Good morning.....

I've been a bit busy last couple of days. Trying to catch up. It's good to see all of your comments and photos.

Some of you may have heard about major flood in Tennessee in which several people died and many are still missing. The location is about 75 miles south of us.

We had plenty of rain here but nothing even close the the 17" in 24 hours they had in that part of TN.

Big Boy 4014 will be in southeast MO and in southern IL this coming weekend. I am planning on going with friends to see it.

Everybody ...... Have a good day.

Afternoon All,

Didn't go to Dad's today, so I did several chores at home. After lunch I ballasted about 4 foot of main line. I figure I have about 75% of the main line ballasted and about 15% of the sidings. Tomorrow I have to take him to VA for hearing aids that he needs very, very, very badly. The truck should be ready in about a hour to get after taking out a second mortgage to pay for it.

Willie- Very nice buildings.

Steve- Yeah, I wasn't very precise with the first one I did and it was a constant pain in the neck. Everything is looking good.

Guy- I enjoy the train shots in the snow especially steamers.

moermusic- That looks like a really nice setup.

Garry- Good to hear that you and Shelley were spared.

I hope everyone has a good night.
