Made an appointment for the COVID-19 booster shot yesterday. Closest place for us is Vallalla, NY 44 miles away. Lots of appointments open for Tuesday the 23. I tried the drug store in town but they told me the shots come packed in 10 so you need 10 people ready to receive the shot that's why there not offering the boosters.

Welp... just made most of the travel arrangements for a cruise out of NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana) at the end of Jan.

Get tested back in IN, Fly in to NOLA, sleep, walk 5 blocks to the cruise terminal, go stare at the ocean and eat for 7 days, until they make me get off the ship. Then a couple of days in NOLA.

Travelling with SIL and her partner (hereafter, partner is referred to as Punk). We're all late 50 to mid 60s. Gonna be a lot of grumping about walking. Mostly from me and Punk. My wife is a power walker, and complains I walk too slow.

Other than hitting the WWII museum in NOLA, I don't care what we do. Any ideas?

The first weekend of the McWane Holiday train show is over for me. Not a large crowd, but a steady stream of visitors.
Talked with one couple who have been bringing their children to see the train layouts for 10 years.
I took a picture of each of the 5 layouts on display this year. The scale and layout size is in the picture label.
The Hogwarts and Lionel layouts belong to McWane, although the Wrecking Crew maintain them during the holiday show.
It took over an hour to clean all the track before I left this evening.

Good evening Shop Dwellers!

MegaThanks to the following who either clicked the button or commented on my Saturday photos: Louis, Sherrell, Joe, Guy, Tom-C51, Rick, Gary, Jesse, Willie, Jaz, Christian, Hughie, Dave, Karl, OB Ken, Chad, Curt

@IronBeltKen that’s a nice shot of the loader & dumptruck!
:) :) :)

. . .
IBKen- Love the shots of the slag operations.
:) :) :)

Ken - I really enjoyed the heavy-hauler photo, with the smoke in the back. Just a side note. I worked on electric drive heavy haulers for two years of my life. Your depiction is pretty well what they look like when a coal load lights up.
. . .
Thanks Guy for the kind comments! Q: Does "electric drive" mean they don't have internal-combustion motors in them...or that their drive trains are more like Diesel-electric locos? I would think they'd need a helluva huge battery to supply enough juice run one of those things if they're not tethered to a live wire...

IB Ken- Another great steel mill shot. I prefer the one where you can still see the reddish/orange color.
. . .
Thanks Curt! I was on a guided tour of the Great Lakes Steel - Zug Island mill in April 2003, and I watched a giant loader filling up over-the-road semi's with red-hot chunks of slag, which was still oozing large amounts of smoke! I wanted to try to simulate that here, but I couldn't "spray" on the smoke without hiding the "glowing" chunks. Another operation that cannot be simulated in a 1:87 scale op session...

Nothing super-interesting to report from the trainroom, other than incremental progress on the view-block wall. I cemented the pieces of painted Evergreen corrugated siding onto the Masonite sections using clear silicone caulking gel. That stuff requires 24 hours to cure completely, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow before getting back to that. Once finished, I can start shooting photos of the yard.

(I've run out of interesting photos to share from the archive - sorry about that... )

Good Night - and have a Pleasant Tomorrow!

New Orleans, take one of the carriage rides from in front of the St. Louis Cathedral. Did it before Coviddand it was worth IMO every penny. Your wife will like the Riverwalk. Stay off Bourbon St. if you can,one of the smelliest overhyped places I have ever been. Have fun

Good evening.

Here at 9:30pm in the north, it's warmed up enough that there is a weird ice-rain happening outside. It's not quite snow, more like little, tiny hail. I suspect it's going to be some kinda slippery on the roads tomorrow.

Q: Does "electric drive" mean they don't have internal-combustion motors in them...or that their drive trains are more like Diesel-electric locos? I would think they'd need a helluva huge battery to supply enough juice run one of those things if they're not tethered to a live wire...
Ken - In a nutshell. The 160-ton heavy haulers I worked on have Catepillar diesel engines driving a vac alternator that transfers power to a large deck mounted rectifier, which converts to 3400 vdc. That dc electricity supplies the dc motors which are essentially the rear wheels of the truck. The rear wheels are large squirrel cage motors with tires on them, that drive the truck.
I'm not sure if a diesel-electric locomotive works on the same principal, but, I suspect it would.

One day, I'll try and dig up some photographs of those trucks. I have some from 12yrs ago, somewhere.

Good morning y'all.

It is currently dark, cold, and wet. That's enough for the weather, time for the coffee and bacon.

Flo- I'll take the usual, in my accustomed spot.

Terry- Don't be start nothin', you keep that to yourself. 🤣

No new news on The Row, although I did order some LEDs for it. Going to try to get some more time in on it over the holiday. I have to work through Wednesday, but then I'm off until Sunday afternoon, when I head out to Fayetteville, NC for a week. I found a local train shop as well as a Hobbytown USA within 12 miles of my hotel so I'm looking forward to seeing what they have.

Gotta get ready to roll out soon, hoping an early start and a long day today and tomorrow will make for a light Wednesday.

Y'all have a blessed day.

Good morning all! Clear and 30 degrees heading for sunny and 38 for the day. I've been catching up on all your posts as I drink my coffee this morning as I took the day off from...pretty much everything yesterday. Just had no motivation whatsoever, so I went with it and spent a lot of time just doing nothing. Back to work today, but it's a short day so I'll be home early. My grandson has a basketball game tonight and we'll probably go to it. He's not optimistic because the other team is really good and has one player who is 6 feet, 7 inches tall and another who is 6'2". This is 8th grade we're talking about and they have kids that tall. Those two guys were probably already taller than me (I'm 5'10") by the time they left first grade 🤣

Anyway, I had planned to do some track testing yesterday to determine whether or not something I'd heard about actually improves electrical conductivity in the rails. Once again, my lack of motivation kept that from happening. Once I get another chance and feel like I have some energy I'll do that and report back.

Hope you all have a great day!

Good Morning All. Clear and 39° to start the week. Should reach 65° again today, with mid-70's Tuesday and Wednesday.

58 years ago today, JFK was assassinated in my hometown of Dallas. I was in seventh grade at the time. While I was with the guys outside playing football at recess, the girls and the nuns were inside watching a TV that someone had brought to school. We came in when recess was over to the sight of all of them crying and learned the news. Many of the mothers in our Mother's Club were in downtown Dallas, having been selected as hostesses at the luncheon that he never made it to.

Pizza - While I don't make/order it with pineapple, if it's there, I don't mind. I make mine with pepperoni, sausage, hamburger, bacon, Canadian Bacon, jalapeno, mushroom, onion and bell pepper; or any combination that I have in the fridge at the time. I have a whole wheat crust recipe that's outstanding.

Thanks for all of the likes and comments regarding the layout views posted yesterday; Tom, Guy, Christian, IB Ken, Rick, Mikey, Jaz, Dave, Gary, Karl, Troy, Joe, Hughie, Sherrel, Louis, Curt, Tom O, OB Ken, Patrick.

Hello Francine. I haven't had a Western Omelet in a while, so that's my choice this morning. So Flo has the day off today?

I did make it to the train shed yesterday after spending some time in the early afternoon re-stacking some more firewood. Time to attack that broken switch. First step was removing it - took about 30 minutes. This is what I had.
IMG_8318.JPG

After fumbling with it a it, I determined that I needed to super-glue one end to the throw bar.
IMG_8321.JPG

The other end just slid in and out of the hole, so after inserting it, I gave it a couple of whacks with a nail punch and hammer to spread out the pin and keep it from coming out again.

This appeared to work. I could have used the new spare one, but I am kind of anal about fixing stuff instead of throwing it away. I'll reinstall it today hopefully. I am saving the new one for an area that will be ballasted, thus allowing this one to be easily removed if the repair doesn't hold up.
Nothing else of any note yesterday.

Mikey - That looks like a fine train show.
Jesse - Be safe driving on those wet roads.

Just 40 more days until New Years Day. That means just 44 days until Willie's birthday. Send those presents now and avoid the rush.
Everybody have a great day. Stay Safe.

Morning all,

Not much done yesterday or Saturday after I left work. So far so good on the data move I did over the weekend. I came in early as some of Public Works starts at 6:00a and now 1/2 hour into Monday, not problems yet. I don't expect any except from those who screen locked their computers when they left on Friday. I had to force offline about 6 users. I left instructions about logging off and back in before calling me with problems so we'll see how that goes when they start at 7:00a.

Got the Booster on Friday, and just felt a bit "not right" on Saturday. No migraine within the 24 hours after the shot, but just not right. Much better yesterday and good today. Feel like 2012 was a pin cushion year for me, 3 Covid, 2 Shingles, and both flu and tetanus shots. Better be careful I don't spring a leak... ;)

Did get notice my new computer should be here at the office sometime today and the couch we ordered a few weeks back and were told it would be 6-9 months before we see it can be picked up starting tomorrow. How time flies when you're older...Short 6-9 months.
