The 1970s were a different time. And if you wanted to sell Bologna to moms, you worked on the kids.
That is so true!

The man who raised me baked a loaf of homemade bread every other day. But I wanted Schmidt's Blue Ribbon Bread. Being spoiled as I was, I got it. This commercial may have had something to do with it.
As a huge fan of Red Skelton this commercial appealed to me

Good morning all!

Happy Friday to the workers of the world!

Going to be a bit cooler today than the last several days. High is only supposed to get to 84F. It will feel much warmer
as the humidity level is 87%. No rain forecasted. Another good day to hit the pool this afternoon.

Have some chores to do around the house this morning. I will probably get out and mow before the 90s return on the
weekend. I also have to run down to Staples and do an Amazon return. We got new phones this week and my wife
ordered new cases and screen protectors. She ordered for IPhone 16 pluses but they shipped cases for just the iPhone
16, so they didn't fit. Might as well get a haircut while I'm down there as well.

Other than that, not much else going on in my world.

Have a safe day everyone!

This has been a most unusual and difficult year for my Birds. But I will always bleed Orange. "It aint over till it's over" I stuck by my Birds in 1988, win or lose I can stick with them this year.
I know how you feel being a die-hard Cubs fan all these years.

I'm not a fair weather fan like some of of the bandwagon Cubs fans. I have stuck by them
through some really horrible seasons that were painful to follow.

That's why they are referred to as the Lovable losers!

Good morning from Wisconsin. At 6pm last night we had a 30 minute gully washer of a bit more than 2.5” in my rain gauge. At 8pm as we walked out of the hockey rink it was raining and that continued till about 11 last night. I know it was raining over night as the thunder woke me at 3:10 this morning. The lightning had to have hit close by as it shook the house. Almost 3” in the gauge this morning. High today will be 18 degrees cooler than yesterday’s miserable 96f degrees. Another Friday where my grass will not be cut. It’s been 2 weeks because of all the rain we have had the last 10 days, predicted or not.

I’m not sure about today. Maybe some train room activity but other than some Front end Friday pictures I don’t really want to do anything to the layout. I’m thinking that instead of tearing it down to just add the second deck. Terry says I can have the whole downstairs once the daughter’s family moves out. That’s an extra 1000sq ft. but I wouldn’t use it all. The guest bedroom, bathroom and theater will stay but most of the family room (my cave really) can be used for expansion. Just 1 empty non supporting wall between the train room and the cave would need to be removed. I think Terry finally realizes that the last few years the family activities we always held have been done at the daughter’s house and will again when their house is done. Covid changed a lot of our traditions. I still have the nagging suspicion that as soon as I start she will want to move.

Yesterday one of the guys came over to discuss adding another paper mill to his layout. His ideas and mine based on our text conversations turned out to be hugely different. Also his time frame (Christmas) I cannot match. We’ll see how this goes

The grandson filled in yesterday in a hockey game at 7:15. They got smoked! His regular Wednesday team has done well. He finished up his soccer camp yesterday afternoon on the UW campus run by the head coach of the men’s team and coaches from the Madison Soccer league programs. This is his third camp he’s attended there. The UW HC talked to him and his mom as Brooks was given a series of soccer drills and strength exercises to work on. He also told Brooks not to believe any coach until his senior year in high school about concentrating on 1 sport. He said hockey and soccer have similarities in the strength programs. He said enjoy both.

Enjoy the day

Good morning

57f and overcast skies. Presently serenaded by a catbird, pheasant, and raven. 39 species today including the Chestnut Sided Warbler, I even got a good sound recording!

I got my carrier switched over from ATT to
Consumer Cellular. Got more data for a third of the price, and my phone contact could speak English without a thick Indian accent.

My new 0-6-0 went around the track yesterday, forward any reverse, smooth, and quiet. I think it is officially broken in.

Damp morning, off to the train shed. Switching and structure building today.

Back later,

Dave LASM

The folly of my youth came back to hit me in the head yesterday. I grew up on the beaches of Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara and baby oil was considered sun screen. A little sunburn was considered normal.

Fast forward 40+ years and at my annual April dermatology appointment is was told to keep an eye on the top of my head. I had a couple of things that could become a problem. One of the those "things" continued to grow and last week it became painful. I went in yesterday and he said I did the right thing keeping an eye on it. He numbed it up, dug it out, cauterized, and sent it out for biopsy.

I've had 2 squamous cell carcinomas on the left side of my face. I guess all the driving in sunny CA exposing the left side helped. The first one was on the nose near the corner of the left eye. Eight 3-minute radiation treatments later it was gone. 6 weeks later I found another just in front of the left ear and that was cut out.

The dermatologist said wearing a hat now helps and is better than sunscreen, but the damage was done getting fried in my youth.

Keep an eye on the spots and bumps. Pink is not a good color. Non symmetrical is not a good shape. Fast growing and becoming painful are not good either.

I have a question for everybody that’s gotten old enough they are having trouble in a smaller scale of modeling. I’m thinking about divesting my N, and building a 2x7 ho switching layout. Because of where I live, that’s pretty much all the rom I have. I could probably stretch it to 30 inches, but it would require some careful measuring and construction.
Any ideas? Would a larger scale benefit, or am I just putting a bandaid on?

You could do a lot with a 2 industry switching layout in that footprint. I have a 2'x13' HO switching layout. 4 switches, 4 industries ( freight depot, fuel oil distributor, team track, and large feed mill), and an operating session takes about 30 minutes.

A string of cars is push down to the sorting track and then cars are dropped off/picked up. You don't need a ton of track, runarounds or switches.

Good Morning All. Partly cloudy and 73° this morning. Same old forecast for the next ten days, and they have left the rain in it for Monday and Tuesday, so far!

Grocery trek yesterday went well, no sugar A&W Root Beer was on sale, buy 2 12-packs and get 3 free! So were my wife's Caffeine-Free Diet Cokes, so we stocked up. I wish that they did the same thing for beer! Wife changed her mind and decided to go with me and we stopped at Jersey Mike's to pick up lunch on the way back home. Prices don't seem to have gone up in a few weeks; gas is still $2.59/gal.

I have no choice but to pressure can some Tomatoes today, as we have run out of containers/places to keep them. I have plenty of jars ready, so it's just a matter of processing them now. I should mow today, let's see what happens and how long the canning takes.

Just had a short time out in the train shed yesterday. I did finish assembling the rider lawn mower.

It's in the paint booth right now with a coat of white primer on it. I will be using the Cub Cadette paint scheme on it because it's the easiest. Plus,, that's the picture on the kit that's easy to see. I started on the push mower in the same kit, filing the flash off and drilling the holes to attach the handle.

Handle is just a 3" piece of .020" wire that has to be cut and formed. However, they don't include a template for that, I just have to wing it.

Package deliveries - Can't use mailboxes here, as our boxes are clustered in a brick enclosure 1.25 miles away! They also can't use street addresses because like most (7 of 8) of my nearest neighbors, I don't have my address posted anywhere. Actually with the exception of Amazon delivering neighbors packages to my address that I posted about yesterday, we have unusually good service from Amazon, UPS and FedEx. USPS just leaves a notice in the mailbox to drive 12 miles to town and pick stuff up at the PO itself if it doesn't fit in the box. That always adds an additional day.
Louis -
A brilliant man once told me "You got to keep moving or the devil will sneak up and get you"
True words of wisdom that I live by.
Terry -
If a person gets a job as a delivery driver and refuses to follow basic, legitimate instructions such as “5th house on the left, grey Toyota in driveway”, they need to be fired.
I'm hearing that they don't get fired because there isn't anyone else to replace them with. Some of the delivery vans that have come to my house have "Help Wanted" signs painted on the back.
Insomniville - While I generally agree with you on customer service overall, I have always had very good responses from all of the model railroad related companies that I have dealt with. That includes Walther's, ScaleTrains, Bar Mills, Woodland Scenics and Blair Line...those are the ones that I recall.
John - A few years ago, lazy FedEx drivers used to hand off some of our packages to USPS, but they seemed to have fixed their system and come here directly now. I don't recall anyone other than Amazon who delivers on Sunday here.
Mike - Yep! I learned to flip my Micro Mark building jig upside down for larger structures also. I don't have any 1-2-3 blocks, but I have a dozen or so steel blocks that were in the "reject/recycle" pile in our tool & die shop where I worked. Mostly the result of the Engineering Department changing the specs on a new part after the die-makers had already started making the fabrication die.

Everyone have a fabulous Friday. Here comes the weekend!

I have mentioned before, and is worth mentioning again (IMO).

Way back in time I bought Dawn an ironing board..

I then became owner of Dawn's old ironing board. I stripped off the material etc. etc. down to the bare board.

Laid some track and the layout was born. A station. Run round facility. Locomotive shed. Two road Goods Yard with a shed and horse/cattle dock. All in 00 gauge.

Rolling stock comprised of 0.4.0 or 0.6.0 locomotives. (One running at a time.) Three small four wheeled carriages. Freight wagons.

The layout was fun to operate and lasted with me for 18 months when I gave it away.

In a way it is a reason why I love little engines.

My 'old Sovereign Street' station is on a 4ft x 1ft (at the widest part) board.
