Good morning from a very noisy front porch in South Central Wisconsin. Noisy because the garbage and recycling pick ups are occurring. 2 trucks picking up the bins that try to drive the speed of sound between the 100’ separating the bins at each house.

It’s still warm:

We are still getting the Canadian smoke haze that I cannot believe our illustrious leader has not issued a fricking tariff on. But that’s ok as he’d rescind it a couple days after issuing! Or say he ordered Canada to either become state 51 or put out those fires…

Insominiville: Welcome aboard. I’m much farther north of Willie by about 975 miles

Spent a pleasant day Sunday doing nothing except talking pictures of my freight cars for inventory and possibly car cards. I mentioned to Terry that I’m really thinking about tearing down and then building a new layout. The grandson said we should expand the slot car track. I told him not happening. Where the slot car track is now would become a helix! I’m at 55/45 in favor of starting over. She who must be obeyed keeps saying this is our final house in Wisconsin but I seriously doubt that. If I believed it I’d have started a new layout already.

Heading over to the 2 houses this morning I am the project manager for. A good friend and of course the daughter’s place. This week the daughter is moving her office from here to her outbuilding that except for landscaping is done. Appliances for her kitchenette are being delivered today and I will head over when they call with the 30 minute warning. The son in law has been having some we now believe is vandalism over at his vineyard the last few weeks. We now have cameras (done Friday)over there but last week he had 20 vines roots ripped out. Not sure if it’s human or animal but based on the tracks he thinks it’s human. A couple fencing companies will meet with him this week but a 6-8’ fence around the whole property may not be worth it or affordable. The vineyard after 6 years started showing a profit last season but barely. I’ll be interested to hear the quote. He is now a contract grape grower for 3 Wisconsin vintners.

Terry is at the VW dealership. The AC is barely working in my Jetta. They said 3-4 hours and they will Uber her home and pick her up if she didn’t want to stay. She’s been gone 40 minutes so I think she’s staying. She had a book with and breakfast at Burger King she can do is across the street and she can shop at a bakery a few blocks from the dealer.

The grandson is at Soccer camp this week conducted by the Men’s soccer coaches on campus at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. His best friend’s mom is an associate Athletics Directors at the UW. She picked Brooks up a few minutes before I started typing and one of us will pick up the boys around 4 this afternoon. They are using both the indoor and outdoor practice facilities because of the extreme heat.

The wife just pulled up in a Uber. As the car turned in the driveway her text saying she was coming home arrived

Enjoy the day

Going to 95°F today. Same as yesterday. I didn't even open an outer door yesterday and just as soon not know how miserable it is outside. I hope this heat slows the grass growth because I'm not cutting in this heat.

I intonated one of my guitars yesterday because I changed to heavy bottom strings. I ended up having to turn three saddles around for more travel as those three were all sharp when tuned. Today I'm thinking of changing strings on a Jackson with a Floyd Rose tremolo, but I haven't decided whether or not I'm up to that task today.

Might run trains later. Don't know yet.

I was going to run trains yesterday afternoon. I have a JBL Flip 4 speaker I use in the train room to stream German radio from my computer. The night before a Win 11 update wiped out my Bluetooth so I had to futz with that to get it working again and never did run trains. This was on my living room computer. I could have used the main system, but I don't think the Bluetooth would have been received at the distance involved.

I've rambled enough. Have a good day all.

I hate yellow jackets. They're the one part of summer I don't look forward to.

I put yellow jacket traps out at the beginning of April, to catch the queens as they come out of hibernation. The goal is to trap as many as possible before they establish a colony. I've caught as many as 9 in one trap. Activity peaks between August to October. The fewer colonies around the house the fewer that bother me on the deck when I am eating.

Thankfully, bald face hornets have not been an issue in the 20+ years we've been in this house. I've caught a couple of queens over the years, but haven't had to deal with the workers or beach ball size nests in the trees.

I saw some yellow jacket workers in the back yesterday and took that as signal that there are established colonies around. I put fresh pheromones in the traps this morning. I just mark the calendar and refresh the pheromones every month until the end of October. If any of you place the traps out just remember to place them 20'-30' from where you want to hang out. Hanging them on your deck or porch just attracts them to that area.

I used to make really good money selling seasonal wasp/yellow jacket/hornet trapping programs. Charge a one time fee for the traps, and a monthly charge for the tech to refresh the pheromones April - October, then store their traps for the following season. One company (tech manufacturer), with 7 buildings spread over 50 acres, required a lot of traps. They saw the results, employees could eat outside and no-one was getting stung anymore, after the first year. The best part was that they wanted "new" traps every year. A clean looking image was important and I wasn't going to argue.

Good morning all,

69f and light rain, it was calm and dry a few minutes ago, I don't think it will be raining all morning, the high today is only 82 so we are in much better shape than yesterday.

Since retirement, we are economizing in a couple areas. Getting rid of the Culligan softener rental and instead of purchasing a Morton from Menards. Also switching to Consumer Cellular, get 10 gb of data for $50 per month. With ATT it was 6gb for $105 per month. They would really slow us down from time to time as well, even when we were well under our limit. 2 lines.

Total savings for both moves over $100 per month, will add up to a new locomotive in short order ;)

So heading to Menards later, currently headed out to the train shed to do some ballasting, make more trees, maybe run trains this afternoon.

I get a lot of carpenter bees in the spring around here. The males don't have a stinger, and the females are docile. The males like to investigate me while sitting outside when it's nice. They'll hover a couple of feet away right at eye level and give me the once over. They are very territorial. They usually go away in a few minutes. I never swat at them because I know they are no threat.

Red paper wasps and mud daubers are plentiful too. Those get a spray of RAID if they start bothering me, but they don't usually. They are not aggressive if left alone, but every now and then you get one that won't leave you alone.

Just came back from running errands. Blazing sun, temp at 94, and super humid. Drove by a church where there
was a crew paving an asphalt parking lot. Can't imagine how those guys do it given the ambient temp and the
hot asphalt.
Another job I couldn't imagine in this weather is a roofer. The ones I see around here all summer have long sleeves, and gloves on.

I suppose if that's your line of work you get used to it though.

I worked along side paving crews for 7 years, those were 12 hour days and I was on my feet walking behind the paver, mostly just observing but sometimes taking samples for lab testing. I asphalt inspected averaging 2 months out of the year.

When they lay it down, it averages about 300f.

I always wore long sleeves and a hat for sun protection.

One of the operators was bald and never wore a hat. He was an older gentleman, I will guess (hope) he was gooped up with sunscreen.

Here in Minnesota they are laid off Oct 15 to May 15, that was a lot of their motivation.

Mud Daubers are the least aggressive, but scariest of all the wasps. You literally have to squeeze them in your hand to get stung. They are a solitary creature. They fill the chambers, in the mud nest, with one egg and spiders to feed the larvae when they hatch.

We have European paper wasps and they are half as aggressive as yellow jackets. Their nests are usually under the eaves and you have to go out of your way to piss them off. I know nothing about Red ones.

Couldn't poke my head in first thing due to an appointment with the vampires, but now that's done. I just need to wait and see what they tasted in my blood.

It's 95F, and my fool self is sitting outside on the patio because... why not? I like heat! The only downside is the constant reminder that the pool pump needs to be replaced. It keeps turning on.. then off... then on... then off... Sigh. The stupid things are expensive, too.

Later today will be a visit to the cardiologist, then I can get back to train room stuff. I finished up a control panel for the outside of the room, and now just need to finish the bracket for the timelapse camera that I'm going to stick up in the corner (really just a Raspberry Pi with a camera module). I want to document my project (which will probably be infinite in this case), and I never think of doing that before I get started on a project, so I'm trying to do it differently this time.

Texas Hobo: It surprises me just how popular RC cars are these days. The hobby store in Leander had an indoor track that people were drifting cars around. It was pretty neat!

troyphoto: I know nothing at all about gaming of that sort, but could you actually integrate the trains into the game? I mean... troop transports! And unique attacks, like running dwarves or mages over with your locomotives...

santafewillie: Okay, now I'm definitely interested in stopping by there. It'll just depend on when I next manage to acquire the social energy to go visit with my relatives up there. =)

Kusojiji: :)

DeakonKC, Patrick, TLOC, and anyone else I missed: Thanks for the welcome!

Bah. I was going to say more, but I've suddenly got one of those really annoying visual floaters encroaching, and that usually means I'm about to be struck by a migraine. Time to go take a nap and see if I can short circuit that. Not what I had in mind for today...

Good afternoon. It's 90 and humid, with thunderstorms thunderstorming around.

I picked up my mail this afternoon, and found some really terrible financial news from the bank I've done business with since 2010.
It seems the credit union, which is supposed to be non-profit, is going broke paying me 4 cents a month interest for the money I have in my accounts, and they are not only going to stop that massive cash hemorrhage, they are also going to start charging a $7.50/month service fee. They will be providing a bunch of services I didn't ask for, and have covered by other companies. According to the correspondence, it is non-optional.
I guess I'll see if I can find another institution that offers a checking and savings account, without a bunch of services I will never use, and won't charge me a fee. It may be a futile search. We'll see...

I hate those things. Fortunately haven't had one in a few months. Hope it's mild.

Good News, I found my spirit animal; Extinct!

You seem to have the worst luck.

None of the credit unions I deal with have such fees on their basic accounts (which is what I have) and I still get interest!
Are there credit unions that you might have access to through prior employment, schooling, military service, etc?

Check out the NASA federal credit union. My wife is a member there. You either have to have connection to NASA or you have to join sine sort of space enthusiast group or club or something. I think that is free. I don't remember as she's been there for years. She joined to get access to a cheap consolidation loan many years ago. She never really used it for normal money use (checking or savings) but I think her account is still active and as far as I remember they had no fees on their basic accounts. I know we don't pay any. They probably are also members of the CO-OP network which allows shared branching and shared ATM access across the country.

There are plenty of other similar ones that you may have access to and they may not be local to you. I use a credit union in Mass and one here locally. Shared branching gets me all the service I need.

95 here in Branson MO. Celebrating our 41st Anniversary. Celebrated with lunch at Schlotsky's Deli and buying a new pair of sneakers. LadyC found a couple of new dresses. Went to home Depot and the Missus is excited that she found some Quartz for new countertops in the kitchen. Relaxing in the AC right now then gonna hit a steak house for dinner.
@troyphoto maybe this thread will give you some ideas. https://forum.reapermini.com/index....-fort-talon-cav-repair-facility-by-kristof65/

Congratulations on 41 years! We have our 39th in about a month.

A very happy Anniversary to you and the Mrs.

Congratulations on 41 years!

Hi! I'm new! I'll just sit quietly in that booth over in the corner over there; hash browns and Dr. Pepper will do for me...

Been looking in through the window for quite a while now; feels like I already know you guys. Your lives are much more interesting than mine, so I will probably only occasionally have things to say -- but I will very much enjoy listening in.

Last time I looked, it was 86F here, somewhere around halfway between santafewillie and the Texas Hobo. That was around an hour ago. Waiting for the weather app to decide if it's going to rain this week; yesterday it said yes (five days!), but today it says no. You'd think with all the AI that they could at least get the weather prediction dialed in, but noooo...

I transplanted myself here just about ten years ago now, and have no regrets -- but I'm a died-in-the-wool introvert, and I was a remote worker on top of it, so in ten years I haven't really gotten to know much about the area. Pathetic, I know. Since I'm getting into trains, I decided to go check out the hobby shops for the first time yesterday.

What a disappointment!

Checked The Hobby Shop out in Leander, Kings down in Austin, and HobbyTown over by the Domain, where Fry's Electronics used to be before they closed it down. Only HobbyTown seemed to have any real quality selection, and that was mostly in HO. N gauge seems not to be popular.

Kings had a bunch of *very, very old* N gauge stuff. Atlas track bits in those yellow/orange envelopes that looked like they were from the early eighties at the latest -- exactly what I remember from when I was a kid. I didn't buy anything.

This coming week is medical week, both for me and for one of my cats. Not looking forward to that, but it is what it is. Just lab tests and checkups for me, at least. The cat gets to have his teeth cleaned, which I'm sure he'll just *love*.

Today will be working on bits and pieces toward the conversion of my former back office into my new train room, and maybe some planning toward what I'm actually going to build. Nothing else on the schedule.

If anyone knows where there's a train store with a good selection of N scale stuff within a hundred miles or so of Austin, please let me know!
Welcome to the forum.

I'm in west Texas so I share your pain on no train stores around. Harris Hobbies is in Athens Texas. You might want to call as I know he has a lot of HO stuff (that is the scale I model in ) but I am not so sure about N scale.

Take care....John
