This is without the smoke, looking SE, at sunrise.

Got back from my walk. It was 70F by the time I got back. Still breezy. But direct sun so you still felt a bit hot. Better than the 85F a day or two ago.

Need to get out and weed whack and eat a late breakfast. I may postpone the weed whack job until the sun gets behind the mountains this evening. I have a large plate of other stuff to do and I’m hungry. It’s noon.

That’s a higher temp than I would use. I normally cook beef from 130-133. Usually more 133 as the wife doesn’t quite understand that red/pink doesn’t mean raw. My strip and rib eye for a thick cut is around 90 min.

But 138f works too.

I’ve never done flank that way so was wondering.
Gotta go a little bit longer to break down the fibers. I was going to start a bit earlier but got side tracked while repairing my Yokosuka-sen drive unit. Split u-joint. All of my stuff with this drive mechanism have all split at the motor connection. Yokosuka-sen, Keikyu, RDC Budd. At least I'm getting better with taking the thing apart.

Whew it hit 94 today but no rain. Gotta really question my choice to buy a black van with dark gray interior on days like this! Anyway, the missus had a delicious diner tonight when I got home, my g'nephew [13 year old] ate 3 plates! Yeah, he's a teenager. Fairly busy at work today, which is good for the owner, as this is our slow season for gun shops.

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those with meat thermometers

It's troy again

Trying to get this pork butt done

I was up to about 188, and wife wanted to go get a pizza. So I closed the vents, figuring the roast would continue creeping up with the residual heat in the kamado.

Nope.

I still had plenty of charcoal, but the center of the basket was exhausted. By the time we came back from pizza, I had to pull the meat from the grill, rearrange the coals, and add another firestarter tumbleweed. And the meat kept dropping.

So it's back on, grill is up to 300ish, and we're trying to get the roast to start climbing again. I can remove it when it hits 197.

It is 0820, 25C, 80%. all 3 guessers say sunny and windy, so there's hope for them yet.

Need to figure out what to do with this C56 chassis. Have been scouring thingiverse for anything 0-6-0. I may end up making another boxcab in n scale thiss time or maybe a steam 08 shunter??? And then go troll those extremist sites haha.

While waiting at the grocery store checkout I saw this with all the other snacks of stuff at the conveyor belt. Haven't had one since the
1960's, so I decided to splurge.

Wasn't sure what to expect. It's not as fluffy as I remember from way back when and didn't seem to be very fresh. Maybe it has to do with
the preservatives used these days. Back then, a loaf of bread would only last about 4 days before getting moldy-now it lasts for weeks.

Would I buy another one? No!- I'll remember how they used to taste every time I pass one.

Maybe find an old Atlas switcher body that the frame died from zinc rot.

I haven't had one for years either. I remember we used to put them in the freezer for a frozen treat in the summer.

Bummer that they are not as good as they used to be,

All good things seem to end!

Good Morning All. Clear and 76°. Nothing new on the weather scene. High today in the mid-90's, that's 35°C for some of you.

Busy day yesterday as I spent the morning canning the first major harvesting of the Green Beans. I had 9 pints total, but only 8 jars fit in my pressure canner so the 9th went for supper.

All 8 were successfully sealed. The rings will be removed this morning and into the cabinet they will go.. I'll wait until tomorrow to do the Tomatoes while I catch up on mowing today.
Other activities yesterday included unloading and setting up the battery powered push mower that I bought Thursday. Worked well as expected. First use was around the garden itself where I cannot get into with the tractor-mower. I only have a 40" aisle between the fence and garden itself. The garden location itself is still a temporary location while I wait out the Fusarium wilt, that unfortunately infected the old location. It presumably came in on infected plants and I have to wait five years for the soil to disinfect itself. The old location was successful for 39 years, although signs of the fungus wilt started to show up around year 36. My main issue with the current location besides cramped quarters, is that Bermuda Grass is encroaching on two sides. I expect to restart using the old location next Spring, starting with veggies that aren't affected by the wilt.
Out in the train shed yesterday, I mostly switched out cars at a lot of industries. I sent a local to Charlottesville and switched out 5 of the 7 industries there. Then I ran a few manifest freights from layout end to the other end, then made another local run to Vernon. There I switched out all 7 industrial locations there. Before departing for the pool, I made up another local for Rycon Township with loads or empties for all 5 industries there. Those will be switched next.
I'm still contemplating my next project on the layout. It will be a mini-scene that will make use of the contents of a pair of identical sprues from two different Preiser kits of 120 unpainted figures that I purchased 20+ years ago. Here's a sneak preview of what I already started.

These need paint next after I find some pictures to determine the right colors. While I have an idea of how they will be utilized, I haven't determined the exact location of the upcoming mini-scene yet.

Marlin - Hope that the fires don't affect you. I am envisioning the scope of them by comparing the size to the 4,500 acre farm/ranch across the road from me. That man's plot of land is about 3.5 miles x 2 miles.
Terry - Good news for you. I always hated layoffs at work, but for a different reason. I was the one who had to tell the individual workers that we didn't need them any more. I saw a lot of crying. Later on during my last 7-8 years with the company, that responsibility was transferred to HR. I distinctly remember one older lady in her late 60's who went back to her work area and picked up a purse full of scrap aluminum to take home. I looked the other way.
Deacon - Congratulations on 41 years. We will hit 53 in September. Seems like only yesterday!
David - Enjoy the trip. Don't get carried away by the Scottish lassies.

Everyone have a great Saturday and a wonderful weekend.
Willie,

When you are doing switching ops, what locomotives do you use? Do you run some smaller switch engines?

Interestingly that’s the second C56 mechanism I’ve seen in a forum post today

Twinkies....the reincarnated version is not what we remember. Then neither are the Tasty Cakes and Pies made in Philly. They cut too many corners to save a penny.

Looks like we will be getting some of that mid western heat plus Jersey humidity, for the next couple of days...

Wife and I, (mostly her effort), cleaned and set up the patio today. She also washed the car.

My oldest will be here to help his mom during the first week of my upcoming surgery. That was a welcomed surprise.

Have a good evening.

Willie,

Mostly I use a pair of CF7's, one facing in each direction. Other times I will use a pair of GP35's. Occasionally I will use a pair of GP40X's. Usual Santa Fe operations always used a pair of engines even if they were switching just one car. By the era that I model, they had mostly gotten rid of true switchers, at least in my area. When they first opened Alliance Yard near me, they used pairs of SD40-2's and GP50's. After the merger with BN in 1995, they mostly got out of local switching and turned it over to some local short lines, like DGNO and FWWR.

Haha, I just did a search to make sure I didn't forget and post twice...

Found the other one, though on the other forum.
Yeah. It just coincidentally was a C56 mechanism. I’d not seen one inside before and I got two today.

Some day I may indulge in steam. But so far I’ve been more interested either in vintage electrics and diesels from the 60-80s (Europe as I was in Europe in the 80s riding trains) or Japan as the wife used them in her youth. Or modern (Europe because I’d like to go back some day or Japan because we rise when we’re there). So far not enough juices get flowing with it. Maybe some day. Need to watch enough older movies.
