how does the Division or Subdivision work in the US?
Simply put, a division is a large geographical area with a superintendent. They can be one state or more than one state and they have multiple subdivisions. A subdivision is a section of the railroad that is the length of the railroad that is typically worked by a crew in one day/shift, usually around 100 miles in length. Santa Fe (ATSF), called subdivisions districts.

I just finished installing digitrax DH165IP decoders in the GP35s. All went smoothly with one exception. The first of the GP35's that did not come with a DCC ready light board programmed and ran well without the shell. When I put the shell on, it started making a horrendous noise. Vibration through the shell. I checked everything that I could see - interference from the weight, wires interfering with the running stuff, etc. I shelved it and moved on to the next GP35. This one went without a hitch, so I used it to help troubleshoot. I put the 2nd shell on the 1st chassis and it ran no issues. Did the inverse and it ran fine as well. Put them back on their respective chassis and now all runs fine. So, no idea...

But, the other 3 went well.

Next hurdle was consisting. Couldn't figure it out with JMRI. Consisting tool didn't work. I ended up programming my guinea pig locos with a consisting address of 1. Then used that in JMRI to tie the two locos together. Strange that they don't start running until a higher step is selected, but still figuring it out. I have two in a consist running around the room right now.

DCC, what a pain. It was so much easier to run all 6 together on DC. I'll have to get used to it.

In my daily travels anywhere from Wilmington DE, Fredrick, MD, Washington DC, Annapolis, MD, and southcentral/eastern PA. I have been seeing more gaming stores. Some with large tables set up in the back. It is surprising since I see a decline in other kinds of retail stores. It makes me think your other hobby is growing.

It also reminds me of Avalon Hill's game store on the corner of Saint Paul and Reed streets in Baltimore. Which is long gone now, but I have fun memories of that store. And fond memories of the "geeks" in college who were nice enough to introduce me to Dungeons and Dragons. That was a lot of fun! Gamers are great people from my experience.

Have fun my friend and thanks again for sharing your other hobby with us. I enjoy it!
Geeks and Nerds are what drives those game stores now.

I was just in one last evening for my Demo Night (no takers, but some fun conversations). There are three types of gamers that keep a store like this one afloat:

  • Players of Collectible Card Games, Like Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, etc.
  • Players of Role Play Games like Dungeons and Dragons (and many others)
  • Players of TableTop miniatures like Warhammer 40K

The first and third actually spend a lot of money. The collectible card games are designed to drop the oldest "set" in a quarterly cycle, so no cards are tourney-playable for more than 2 years. And because some are better and more rare than others, stores make $$ on the used market.

Here's our local store a couple weeks ago right after a new card game release. These people paid to be in a tournament, so they could get the "pre-release" of the new set a week early (you can only get it by being in one of the sponsored tourneys). This is in the crack it open and see what the new cards are and what they each do... phase). They had about 50-ish players in on that day. Two weeks later the sets go on sale and there will be more tourneys and buy and selling used cards.

There was a theft here in Indiana a few years ago, where a thief broke into a came store and took the binders full of used cards, valued at over $15,000. Still hasn't been caught.

Tabletop Minis, board games, etc, don't bring the stores the big dollars like the card games do. So our local store has a cafe attached. Coffee and tea drinks, with even more table space for role play games, board games, and whatever.

Here's our store:

Round Table-1.jpg

The taller tables for wargaming are off camera to the left. My demo table was far left off camera. The far side of the store is the cafe side. This was during the Magic Card tourney mentioned above. (pics by Round Table Games, except my demo table)

What?? No coffee order? dang, last night must have sucked. Sir, I hope you are ok. You probably need 2 cups.
I had the coffee earlier. lol
Time for lunch. Flo. A Ploughman's Lunch please.

Just received a letter from the hospital. As my heartbeat is missing more frequently I have to attend the hospital on Monday. Hopefully I shall be back home soon. I still have some books to read that are in my library. 🤣

get that. thank you!

Good morning gang!

76° under partly cloudy skies looking for a high later of 88° with thunderstorms in the middle of the afternoon. Rain should pretty much be consistent through Sunday.

Sitting here in my recliner in the living room, listening to a very familiar sound of my John Deere going around the yard. Wife is trying her hand at cutting the lawn and I’ve been expressly told to keep my ass in the house. I don’t even wanna look!

Healthwise feeling much better. I actually managed to make it to the trains yesterday afternoon just for a small walk around and inspection. I’m sure as time goes on. I’ll be spending more and more time down there. The PT people showed up yesterday and gave me a list of exercises, which are fairly easy. All in all recovery is becoming easy. I’m just going to have to get used to less process foods and just generally eating smart staying away from the junk.
Thank goodness all the food here is 0 cal zero fat and tasty!

Karl, glad you're doing better.👍 Eating healthy will greatly improve your chances of staying healthy. If you have Netflix watch "The Blue Zones". It will get you motivated.

Here's the trailer.

Good morning all!

Happy Friday!

A very cloudy dreary Northern Illinois morning. Currently 65F heading up to only 72F. looks like some rain this afternoon.
All the rain this morning looks to be South of us.

Been a busy morning already. Have 2 loads of laundry already done, and grocery shopping will probably be next. Might
see if I can sneak the lawn in today before the predicted rain early this afternoon.

Not much time in the train room yesterday other than to mess a little with the new Exactrail boxcars I received. Scaletrains
did a nice job on them. I was suprised to find they had Kadee #58s already installed on them. I wonder if they have finally
woken up to the fact they make really nice models, but cant make a decent coupler to save their life.

Have a safe day everyone!

This is probably the most concise and easiest to understand definition I have ever read.

Thank you!

Good morning all,

A little regret about the rant of last evening, wind energy is very smart at a small scale I believe, my heritage is Holland so I must lean that way. Otherwise, we are killing a lot of birds (I forgot that part). Nuclear I still wonder about,

We have a cool 50f with steady rain falling. We only got .2 inch last evening, we could use more.

Still wonder a little about my old locomotives, will be tinkering with them more today. I have never had this super long track so they have not had the opportunity to "stretch their legs" like now. The Varney has an engine which was never run, sat in a box unassembled for 60 years, so should not be the issue. I think the problem lies in the tender pickup, which is old stock. Not sure why it would run fine for 200' then act up.

It will be raining all day so the train shed will be well occupied today.

David (North Brit) - hope the heart improves on behavior

Good Morning All!
54F @ 65% and clear. 80F yesterday, maybe 75F today.

Enjoying the rapid dis-assembly going on.

On the Bronco front: was losing water/coolant which was a head scratch'r. Took the rad cap to Napa to get a 'pressure test' on it. No can do said Napa, so sprung for a $8 new one. Guess what? Apparently the vacuum side of the cap was not working proper, coolant was going into the overflow reservoir but not coming back out. Dave had been harping on me about the rad cap in the Hyundai, now I am a believer. Today is drive it around town with loops starting small, and getting bigger; baby steps. Check stuff out between loops and cool down. Almost everything works on it except the rear window wiper; sounds like a 'rock crusher' and the radio is not even close to being in the dash proper; has fallen down into the slot quite a bit. Neither are earth stopping. Both windows roll up/down via door button, seat goes up and down ... etc. Rear hatch does not latch on driver side, so that needs scrunity. I did have a small miss so I txt'd the original owner asking about how long the gas has been in the thing. Beats Me was the answer. Some gas conditioner took care of most of that. Got some injector cleaner and will apply this AM before the loops and see what shakes out with that. Today will tell if it is going to be reliable of which I can then git rid of the Nissan and make my pockets deeper. Well, talked with Maria about that anywho asking if she cared if we became a one car family for a bit. Didn't care as the Expedition has been running great!

New radiator cap is always a cheap fix to apply. Some coolant had been disappearing in my 88 suburban, when it got worse I tried the Bars stop leak. I previously had the system pressure tested and they (the dealer that did the work) said it was fine. The Bars has substantially slowed the leakage, however it took a couple months of driving to really get the effect.

I did not have any show up in the oil, however.

I use injector cleaner every time she begins to act up a little, usually low idle (which cannot be adjusted with the TBI). Always works.

Have a safe day everyone!

We have the rain right now that's headed your way.

I'm glad I got my grub killer on the lawn before the rain arrived.

Good Morning All. It's once again cloudy and it's 69°, headed into the 90's if the sun comes out. Next 10 days look boring, with clouds in the morning and clearing off in the afternoon with a temperature range from the low-70's to the low-90's. It might or might not rain according to the NWS. Due to the recent cloudy days, the pool water temperature has dropped down to 80°.

Yep! It's Friday the 13th. I'm not the superstitious type, but I have no plans to leave the estate today except to get the mail; and that's a maybe if I forget and make the trip to the mailbox (1.25 miles away) tomorrow instead. I haven't gotten the incoming mail notification yet today so there may not be anything important anyway.

Plans for yesterday changed a bit, as my wife felt ill Wednesday night and opted out of the grocery trek yesterday. That made it longer as I had to do the wine shopping. This week is Kroger's 35% off if you buy 6 bottles, which we always take advantage of. She usually does that part while I am in the produce department and the deli. Since I am not as familiar with the layout of those shelves, I had to do a lot of searching. Otherwise the trip went well. Didn't take the Accura to the shop, so we'll do that next week. Price update: Eggs which seem to be everyone's inflation gauge lately, were $3.49 for an 18 carton. Gasoline is still hovering between $2.49 and $2.69/gal at most places.
The rest of the day went close to the plan, which was none really. I made a major picking of Early Girl Tomatoes from the garden to go with all of the Fourth of July variety that we have gotten. I have had a small smattering of Early Girl in the last week, but yesterday's harvest was considerable for my small garden, over 2 dozen, with many many more to come. Next up looks like it might be the Black Krill variety to go with the others.

Last night I went to the NE window to open it for the night and I saw this in the sky.

As best as I can surmise, it was holograms projected on the clouds by the Winstar Casino about 25 miles north of me. Before I got the phone to take these pictures, I saw outlines of Oklahoma and many other images. Don't know how long they were being projected before I got to the window. These are the better pictures, taken through the window screen which obscured them somewhat.

Out in the train shed yesterday, all I did was continue to attach grabirons to the P2K covered hopper. I'm ready for final assembly next.
1749824696523.jpeg

I did call Walther's Customer Service to inquire about replacement parts for those that were missing from this kit, and was told that they no longer had any inventory left for the covered hoppers. It was a long shot to begin with, since the car was produced around 1999-2000. I am gluing pennies together to replace the missing weight, 8 all together to make 21g. I'll follow up in the next day or so regarding the roofwalk support. I also learned what a new Exacto #11 knife can do if accidentally knocked off the workbench, into the plywood floor.

Yep! It's sticking straight up. Glad that it wasn't my leg!

Kusojiji - You may have identified the offending animal. The Texas Banded Gecko pictured in that link that you provided looks like it.
John - The wind farm near me was quite controversial when it was first discussed. It's about 7 miles away and part of it extends up to the back of the local school. There's 54 turbines spread out over 18,000 acres, which isn't really too dense. Some early supporters switched sides when they learned that their land wasn't included so no money to them for right of way. Some were quite influential and convinced the county people to withdraw the tax abatement's for the project. But they went ahead and built it anyway without the abatement. Profitable enough! Then another land owner's heirs reneged on the power line easement, so they just moved it over to an adjoining property and now someone else is getting paid for the easement. It was put up on the property line so the other folks could see what they turned down. They had reneged because they were holding out for more money. The county itself got some benefits, as the wind company paid for and did the work improving (paving) three different county roads so they could get their equipment in and out without hassle.
Dave - My oldest locomotives are Blue Boxers from the late 80's. Those which I have upgraded still run well, but I never detailed them as well as the newer offerings from Athearn Genesis or ScaleTrains. I also use many Kato and P2K in my fleet that are over 20 years old.
Karl - Glad to read that the recovery is going well. And that you are already able to travel to the train room.
Mike - The reason that the cars had Kadee couplers on them is because it's ExactRail's tooling that ScaleTrains acquired a few years ago. I don't know for sure, but I don't think that they made any upgrades to most of it; ExactRail's tooling was pretty detailed to begin with. It's great though that they kept the products going.

Everyone have a fabulous Friday.

I do not have water in the oil, it is oil in the water. Not much, couple of drops. Seems to happen when cold. Not sure if Bars ( or others ) would be any help for that. Since this is gonna be a engine swap sometime this summer, I don't think I care about a few drops of oil in the water. Will get a new reservoir ( and radiator ) at swap time along with the needed hose changes.
