Good morning, all! We were awoken about 6:00 this morning to the claps of thunder. Shortly thereafter the lights went off, only to return 15 seconds later. Of course, that was enough to throw every clock and appliance off. The rain gauge showed 2.4 inches at 9:30 and it's still raining.

Today's agenda item is the eye doctor for my six month checkup. I have early on dry MD. So far it hasn't affected my vision.

Trains - I have been working on a project for a couple of weeks and hopefully can revel soon. I did run a few trains yesterday just to sit back and watch.

STAY SAFE

You broke a cardinal rule. Guns are to be bought. Not sold. 😂😜😇😉
The older I get the more I just consider them "things"....just like trains.;)

Years ago I had a Winchester 1885 that was part of the shipment to Browning Bros Hardware as payment for their patents. The seller either didn't see or know the significance of "Browning Bros Ogden U.T." stamped on the barrel. I ordered a Winchester factory letter, from the Cody museum, confirming provenance, but in the end it was just a "thing" that I sold to someone else.

You might remember that I did up a Milities Christie faction for another game, but I went with Knight Hospitaller of St. John,
Forgive me, I do not remember, but now that I see them, I believe I have seen them before. An excellent choice indeed!

If I'm not mistaken the original name was The Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. Established in 1113 by Blessed Gerard to provide medical care for pilgrims in the Holy Land. Initially a peaceful charitable organization. They later took on military responsibilities to protect pilgrims. They gradually militarized. By the mid-12th century, they had become a full-fledged military order, fighting alongside the Knights Templar in the Crusades. The military branch became known as The Knights Hospitaller.

Originally a Benedictine lay brother, Blessed Gerard was appointed as rector of the Hospital of St. John in Jerusalem around 1080 by the abbot of St. Mary of the Latins. The hospital had been rebuilt on the site of the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist in the 1060s, following earlier destruction. Gerard’s leadership eventually led receiving papal recognition in 1113.

During the Crusades, the Knights Hospitaller were known as healers as well as warriors. They provide medical care while engaging in battle.

Do your Knights Hospitaller have healing powers?

I find everything about the Crusades fascinating.

I always enjoy seeing all your creations, thank you for sharing them!

In that particular game, no healing powers. But I'm not a fan of the white tabard with red crosses, so I looked up other colors for crusaders.

In the current game, it's a parallel universe, losely based on earth influences. There are dragons and orcs and such, so not a real Earthly crusades. In THAT game, yes, the priest and the honked off big angel made of church parts do have healing abilities. As the big angel does violence upon her enemies, units close to hear can heal up to half of what she caused.

Good day to all...........

Just some house cleaning today. Lots of cardboard boxes to break down and a trip to my nearest county furnished dumpster at the rest area off highway 82.

Maybe some weed eater action this afternoon when it cools down a bit. Hoping to get back in the train room this weekend.

On the "wind generator" subject of recycling.......the blades DO NOT recycle. They are made of fiberglass and balsa wood with some bits of aluminum and some wiring. They cut up the blades with diamond tipped saws and the pieces are buried in a huge pit somewhere in the Nevada desert. The blade pieces never decompose. They will look the same in 10,000 years as they do now. The supports are metal and can be recycled.
Each generator has a twenty year life span. Some of the generators here in west Texas hold 200 gallons of hydraulic and lubricating oil. That oil needs to be changed every six months. If a blade gets damaged, all three blades need to be replaced as they are manufactured in a "three blade balanced set". The concrete base can be anywhere between 300 to 500 (or more), cu yds of 5000 to 6000 psi concrete. And there is a huge amount of steel rebar included.
In my opinion.......while these things may be an "alternative" source of generating electricity, they are NOT environmentally friendly. They have certainly ruined the scenery around here. I used to take some photos of weather events and sunsets here when I first moved "out west". But no more. Some states are now having to go through the courts to determine who is responsible for demolition of de-commissioned generators.
One way they push these generators is by paying land owners a fee for allowing the structures on their property. One upside is in building these generators, it provided a decent income for workers.

Everyone have a great day............John

Hate to disagree, but put some capitalism to work and there will be a way...

They key is creating enough demand to make the recycling feasible and affordable.

Good morning. It is currently 21 C @ 82% at 0700. Guessers say cloudy all day.

We had good enough weather yesterday for me to complete my GP35 weight grinding, so all but one are ready for DCC. The last one is waiting on the light board from Kato USA, which is currently traveling in the wrong direction. Started in IL and went to PA. I pick up my shipment of decoders today.

Good early evening,

I spent the afternoon in the train shed. Does anyone else run old locomotives, like manufactured in the 1960's?

I have been running laps in my 8' x 40' train shed and find that my old Riverosi 0-6-0 (sp?) and Varney 4-6-0 locos will run fine for a while but begin to lurch or stutter some after a few times around. Everything is clean. Are these old motors apt to heat up and act up? No noticable heat, but the motor is inside so not sure about this.

My newer (mfg 1992) Walthers SW-1 will go forever smoothly on the same track.

This is just a theory but there must be some explanation for this action. Any suggestions?

Otherwise, I got the train shed all cleaned up and re-organized, that is always a satisfying task.

WIND TURBINES-- my opinion is these are a joke. Someone is making a lot of money and our kids will have to clean up the mess. Also, to electrify everything we will need LOTS of copper, and I mean lots.

GOES for Nuclear as well. While I was in elementary school, about 60 years ago, "they" were talking about the nuclear waste, thinking that we would figure out a way to get rid of it.

Not sure whatever happened to us just using less energy? Like no space tourism. Smaller simpler dwellings. No bitcoin or data centers. Noooooo, lets just get "free" wind or nuclear (where is that ha ha ha guy)

Well, we did not figure out a way. Let someone else worry about it. Project all these problems forward a couple hundred years (not really a long time in the big picture) and look at all the other issues we cannot solve, or are leaving for someone else to fix, and it only proves our incompetence. I am not too proud to admit that our race is incompetent.

I am aware of several dump sites (now talking toxic wastes) on Lake Superior that have been deemed TOO EXPENSIVE to clean up.

Here ends the rant.

This is a discussion neither political nor religious, so should be safe ground.

Otherwise, have a good evening!

That's why I say the aliens roll up the windows and lock their doors in their space ships when they go by Earth...

Actually modern nuclear technology produces a lot less waste that is a lot less toxic with a lot shorter 1/2 life. There are a lot of different technologies and each has its pros and cons. But it’s a lot less waste and less dangerous waste than older generation tech.

Also I read an article recently about a new technology they’ve been developing that blasts the nuclear waste with certain kinds of energy waves or particles. I forget the details as it was several weeks ago (BV — before vacation) and that blasting greatly reduces the half life of the waste, making it a lot easier to deal with. I’ll see if I can find it.

In my daily travels anywhere from Wilmington DE, Fredrick, MD, Washington DC, Annapolis, MD, and southcentral/eastern PA. I have been seeing more gaming stores. Some with large tables set up in the back. It is surprising since I see a decline in other kinds of retail stores. It makes me think your other hobby is growing.

It also reminds me of Avalon Hill's game store on the corner of Saint Paul and Reed streets in Baltimore. Which is long gone now, but I have fun memories of that store. And fond memories of the "geeks" in college who were nice enough to introduce me to Dungeons and Dragons. That was a lot of fun! Gamers are great people from my experience.

Have fun my friend and thanks again for sharing your other hobby with us. I enjoy it!

heyo coffee people

- outside now 30celcius (to hot for my likeing)
- airport is up as usual
- tonight, beer and Naples style pizza woohoo

on the railroad side: had the meeting with the aluminium construction shop. not cheap but i think i will go with them and start my third layout project -.- iam such a idiot... but i still have space so it should work. the big goal is to create a modular layout that i could take to shows. and my "dream" is to go to the onTrax Trainshow. i think its the biggest US Convention in Europe :) we will see.

I Still have a question where you maybe could help: how does the Division or Subdivision work in the US? What defines what? because if i read that correct the Feather River Canyon has 3! Sub Divisions? SEND HEEEEELP for a poor not knowing swiss fan ;)

Cheers and happy weekend

Marco
