Good Morning All. Clear and 49°, but it's supposed to cloud over soon and the high today will only be 70°. NWS is calling for 100% chance of rain around dawn tomorrow, with clouds and mid-70's until Friday. Then we get sun and 90°, followed by another week or so of warm rain. We'll have to see how this pans out!

A usual Sunday around here yesterday, Mass, a couple of loads of laundry and mowing the south and west sides of the yard. Today will start with the dishwasher.
Caught up with the retirement account balances yesterday. I'm finally ahead for the year after a good week in the Stock Market last week or two. Futures seem to be down this morning, probably due to profit-taking or something in the mid-east.

I did some more on the neighborhood out in the train shed yesterday, but in a change of pace, the camera was in the house. Didn't matter much since all that I did was add some more ground cover. I also examined all of the industry spurs over in the clean-up project area for loose parts and didn't find any. Good to go with vacuuming now. Ran some trains on the upper level as well, since it had been a few days. No incidents to report there.

Happy 420 day if applicable. Everyone have a great Monday.

Well, howdy there internet peeps and those with a chill in the chillidex!

it's Troy again.

Already been to the big box lumber store for lumber, charcoal, and chocolates. then off to the grocery. Hit the Straight of Hormuz station on the way. The oil markets haven't caught up with the events after the Friday evening news dump, and I got gas at 3.61 a gallon. A week ago it was 4.19

I've got a 5 gal gas can I'm trying to burn off 4 year old gas from (through a dual fuel camp stove...) I really don't want to risk putting gas that old through either a generator or my car. I'm not good at small engine repair, and we only have one vehicle, so risking those isn't good.

I've only got about 1.5 gal left to burn off before I can fill the can back up and add some PriG to it. Told the wife to nag me about rotating the fuel out in the fall, when it's still good enough to put in the car's tank.

Also had to unclog the wife's shower. She has the fancy walk-in one we remodelled a couple of years ago. Drain was totally stopped up. We know from the remodel that previous homeowner 30+ years ago took out the Jack-n-Jill shared bathing room, and only used 1.5 inch for the drain lines in the two "tubs" he replaced the old one with. So that line stops up a few times per year. Wife and I are both in the hair loss stage of life. So it happens. Fortunately, a plunger on the flat-level drain in the shower pan worked wonders, so it was probably her P trap, and not in the main line.

Today is add overhead shelves in the garage day. And I need to run a big box of scrap packing, cardboard, and chewed up foam from the MRR over to the community dumpster. I can get away with a trip a week to the dumpster, so I have to time it to right after it's picked up on Mondays or Thursdays. If we fill it, and the maintenance guys have to delay putting their stuff in it, we get billed. Oh, and no putting anything in above the sidewalls of the dumpster. If the trash truck driver has to get out, and start pulling stuff out of the dumpster, Waste Management charges another $485, along with pics of the overflowing and unsafe dumpster.

Since it's one that's lifted with the forks, raised over the cab, and dumped "backwards", I can see a worry for driver safety from falling debris.

that's it for now. BBL.

For those that celebrate 4/20: hope SnoopDog and Willie Nelson were good to you. ;)

Good afternoon. It's windy and 77.
I'm home early after getting bit by a power awning at work. It automatically closed after I manually opened it because it wouldn't work, and broke one of my fingers.
Worker's comp is now refusing to pay for basic medicine for inflammation and pain, pending clinical review, which should take no more than 5-10 business days. Wow... By then I probably won't need it, which is what they're likely counting on.

I'd just mix it with new gas and stick it in the car. I know, I live dangerously.

Afternoon all, just got home a little bit ago from the Marathon. Left the house at 04:45 at 29F with enough frost on the windshield that it took the full 15 minutes of remote start time to clear it. Only warmed up to the low 50s, so the runners enjoyed that. A couple pics.

The first released are wheelchairs of different forms.

The elite women runners, missed the guys as I was on the radio when they came by.

This guy was fast on those.

This was the scene when the general runners started. Three hours like that with less than 5 minutes between each group.

Well, howdy there interneternet peeps and those with sore backs... legs.... arms.... or whatever aches tonight.

It's troy again

Got the shelf in the garage built and hung.

The 2x4 brace across the studs was already there. I just had to do the bracing and shelf. The heaviest thing on it is the leaf blower and it's a small electric one. Spent a lot of the day rearranging (aka: moving detritus piles from Point A, to Point B, to Point C.

The garage is getting reshuffled inside for better organization. Up til now it has just be haphazard, adding stuff here and there as the new stuff was acquired. Now I want to actually have a method to the madness.

I'm only about half way done, and may not get back to it right away. I am definitely all shagged out after that last squawk! Not pining for the fjords, though. I'm not that far gone.

Took a break to get my ears lowered today. Then came back and kept working. Also managed to get a one lap (20 minutes) walk in around the neighborhood after I cleaned up enough to get the car in the garage. Even remembered to run the rolling magnet around the floor before I put the car back.

So, what do I do to relax? Ordered a 17$ book off of Amazon. Many years ago, I read a book called "The Fourth Turning"... a look at historical repetitions of about 80 to 100 year cycles. There is a sequel: "the fourth turning is here now" published about three years ago. It would have been written right as the pandemic was unfolding, so it should be interesting to see what the author says and predicts.

I think I'll pour a few fingers of Makers Mark and dive into that book. Take my mind off of going to the dentist in the morning for the 6mos Lube Oil and Filter check up.

Ok, this is a roundabout...post...and I wouldn't bring it up at all, but that it collectively honors three US veterans from WWII. That said, honoring ANY US veterans from any era is just as worthwhile.

But I happened to be surfing Youtube tonight and I saw this one, which I had seen before. But tonight I saw it again and it brought up the other(s).
The first:

TBF Avenger gunner, and probably too taken apart by gunfire inside his rear bubble to be put back together enough again for his own burial under a shroud at sea. So they sent his own aircraft along with him. And laid him down to his rest.

I do not know his name.

-----------

But this brought to mind (again) the story told to me by a man who flew in the Pacific Theater too, and who lost a friend who also rests...and guards his own plane.

I wrote this about Lynn after his death in 2009. Only just found my own words again this evening. But as poor as they were, I think they express the idea even now:
Default
I would like to propose a toast tonight...

...to the finest man I ever knew.

--------------------

To: Lt. Lynn Daker (USAAF, WW2) One time President of the 500th bomb squadron (US).

Married for 67 years. Never took a drink in his life. Nor a puff from a cigarette (or anything else! And even though he was something of a "biker" in his later years).

Most people who know him would say he never had an unkind word for anyone. Not strictly true, perhaps, but we are all just human.....

I'm sure he still had his faults, but I can hardly presume to judge, and I will certainly not do so tonight.

I can safely say, Lynn was the finest gentleman I have ever been privileged to meet, and to be able to get to know.

---------------

Lynn flew a B25 "gunship" in the Pacific theater, during WW2. Real low level stuff, for the most part. Right on the wave tops all the time (as he told it).

Lynn called it the "greatest adventure of his life," and I'm sure, for him, it would be safe to say it was.

He flew 36 combat missions in the Pacific theater against the Japanese, and his plane was hit 28 times.

He was shot down, (or forced down) twice, and the last time with loss of life to one of his crewmembers--Lynn's best friend: SSGT Desire Wilfred Chatigny Jr (age 21).

Lynn was recently part of an expedtion back to the Phillipines to find his lost airplane (and, it was hoped, by some, the remains of SSGT Chatigny). Sadly, it was not to be: the island natives had gradually stripped the wreck over the years, and so the plane, itself, was largely lost. Only the two engines remain (lying, I understand, like a pair of parked VW beetles on the seabed, under 175' of water).

The salvage crew DID present Lynn with a rum bottle...filled with seabed silt taken from the site of the wreck. Lynn (as I understand) broke up...and said it was worth more to him "than a million dollars"...and asked if it would be ok to share it with the other, surviving members of that same flightcrew....

-------

I was VERY privileged, earlier today (Monday, March 16, 2009), to be able to attend Lynn's funeral here in Boulder, Colorado (US). It was the first time I've ever witnessed a full, 21 gun salute in person...and by the time the bugler finished playing "taps" I was a complete wreck (I know the bugler stood somewhere off to my left, but I never really saw him--I was simply too torn up to see much of anything).

"Taps" always rips me up.

I like to think Lynn would simply pat me on the shoulder, in a moment like that, and say "chin up, young man!"

Regardless...Lt. Lynn Daker certainly earned the full honors of his (very grateful) nation this day. He earned EVERY BIT of the services rendered to him today. No question about it.

------------

Lynn, for his part (so I am told) never took a drink in his life.

So I'm sure, wherever he is, he'll view my "silly little offering" here tonight with some amusement.

Nonetheless, it's all I have left to give him. And I'm sure he'll understand that too.

So: <hoisting beer>

Here's to you, sir! And thank you...for everything!

Christopher Snow

And here's to them all.

Good morning. It's clear and 59, with red flag warning continuing.
I've been up most of the night in discomfort with everything involved swollen as much as it can. I can't say for sure if it would have helped if I had the stuff that was prescribed for it, but I'm reasonably certain it wouldn't have done any harm.
