The rotation speed of the earth, particularly close to the equator gives a 1000 mph head-start on achieving orbital velocity, which is a large part of why Cape Canaveral is located in southern Florida and not Northern Minnesota...or Wainwright Alaska. It's also why Artemis sailed east, out over the Atlantic and not to the west. Heading east adds to that rotational speed. West does not.

Makes it more of a challenge to target our Minuteman III over the pole of a spinning ball and end up with a CEP of a few meters.

Once they pass into the Moon's gravity well, speed will increase roughly 1/6 as fast as it dropped while leaving Earth, since the moon's gravity is about 1/6 that or Earth.
 
Good Morning All. Overcast and 51°. Thunderstorms overnight left what looks like 2" in the rain gauge, judging from the back porch 20' away. Still dark so it's harder to tell, and it's still raining, heavy at times.Temperature at 5:00 am was 63°, so a 12° drop in just a couple of hours since I got up. Mid-60's today and then mid-70's for the next 10 days.

Yesterday was a household task day, starting with the dishwasher and two loads of laundry. Then the water heater stopped working. That's always a drag. One of the heating elements in the tankless electric unit abruptly stopped working. So there went my afternoon, replacing that. I keep extras on hand since this isn't the first time that it has happened. Doing the replacement itself is generally less than 30 minutes, but I have to remove/replace a shelf and all of it's contents above the unit in order to remove the offending element. Still trying to figure out why it is happening. While I can get plumbers all over the area to install one, none know how to troubleshoot why the heating elements are failing.
Made the journey to the mailbox yesterday and found a letter from Medicare telling me that my Medicare number was compromised. So they were issuing me a new card/number. No other explanation. Now I have to remember to take the new card to every medical appointment for a few years to be sure that they are updated! What does one do with a compromised Medicare number???
Today's plan is to assist my wife with the cookies that she's making for tomorrow's Easter extravaganza at my brother's home. Outdoor activity will be minimal until it dries up a bit.

An unusual day yesterday, as I did not go out to the train shed at all, so no progress updates.


David(Marlin) - Try spreading Blood Meal around the garden areas. Deer, like rabbits, are vegetarian and the smell of blood tends to repel them. Doesn't always work, but it's worth a try. Blood Meal is also a good organic source of Nitrogen for the garden, but it must be reapplied after rain or irrigation. Careful not to overdo the application or you'll get nothing but greenery and no flowers.

K-dramas (some are comedies) are Korean produced TV shows. The quality of the newer ones are quite good. The older ones, not bad, but comparable to US Soap Operas.

Most have either English subtitles, or English dubbing. Wife prefers the subtitles. She's teaching herself Korean by watching the shows.

Check me if I'm wrong on this (I could go look it up, but it's actually more fun to reason it out. For me anyway): They are on a trajectory now such that they would come to effectively a dead stop--zero mph--BEFORE crossing the gravity well barrier unless...there is a short additional burn to add enough speed to cross over. I think. Don't want to be moving terribly fast crossing over because the extra speed has to be bled off during the LOI burn...but you also don't want to moving at a walking pace because it could really extend the overall mission elapsed time. If for any reason there isn't that short transition burn they are left riding a free-return trajectory back downhill to earth (at which point they have to bleed off about 7K mph to regain earth orbit).

Or did the TLI burn give them enough speed to cross over right from the get-go? It IS called TLI, so on that basis I would guess I'm wrong about the existence of the other. And of course this mission plan could well be different from what I remember for hundreds of other reasons. I'm not getting the memos 'cause I'm not on the list.

We're too wet here most of the year. I tried it and it washed into the soil too quickly. The back is fenced and the deer stay out because of the dog scent. I've tried cinnamon, cayenne, etc and all are still just temporary solutions. We have herds of deer that roam our area to graze. They strip roses like goats strip briar.

When we lived in the Sierra's my nearest neighbor told me to "mark" my territory. It definitely kept the coyotes out. We also found out why everyone planted Rosemary, Lavender, and Bearded Iris. Deer won't touch them.
 
Actually...there isn't a short burn after all because without a LOI they already ARE on a free-return trajectory. Just a different one that does require a trip downhill to the moon, and then uphill again...and over. A longer trip, but probably faster than coming to a dead stop after all. And probably faster overall too. So I just answered my own question.

Or, as Emily Litella would say: "Never Mind."

Yeah, I had my eyeballs on the Derby Lightweight for a while, but they were waaaayyyy out of my range. I was lucky to find this used one for less than half price.

Correct. They planned the free-return trajectory from the start. The spacecraft will never come to a stop nor will it need any thrust to get it home.

The crew should be waking up in a couple of hours. I'll have to see what's up for today after lunch.

Watching video last night, I was trying to figure out why Christina's watch on her right wrist is two hours ahead of Central Daylight time. Victor's watch on his left wrist showed the correct local time to Houston. The watches the others were wearing never came into view, and I never got a look at the watch on Christina's left wrist.
 
Almost Good Afternoon folks, 61 here, been raining all night, with any luck it will keep it up for a couple of days. One unfortunate result is that with a long, heavy rain, it brings the water moccasins out early, and they are a large, nasty and aggressive venomous snake. Killed two last year on our driveway and yard. Copperheads come up too, but they will try to get away from people if given the chance.
@Bruette I will freely admit to my computer screen getting blurry reading about Cecilia. Thank God.
@troyphoto I'm enjoying following your recreating your layout, it will be a lovely atmosphere with the lighting you are planning.
Gonna take Lady C to lunch in a bit. She has been working her tail off getting everything ready for tonight. I am a truly blessed man to have her.

Yes it works very well with rabbits and deer. I’ve used this method for many years thanks Willie I thought I was about the only person to use it. Also you can try powdered Sulfur if you can tolerate the smell I use it to keep the horn worms or Tomato worms out of the garden just be careful not to get the Sulfur on your Plant leaves it will burn them a may kill them.
 


Good afternoon to all..............

68 degrees here today. Quite a change from the 86 degrees we have had. More rain last night but we are so dry here, the ground has just soaked it up. No more rain until next Thursday according to the weather prognosticators.

More FreeCAD today. I'm hoping to get my first piece drawn today, at least partially done.

I too watched "Greyhound" Thursday night. It was ok...........guess I was expecting more.
In my opinion, it did not measure up to my old favorites, TORA-TORA-TORA ; the original "Midway" with Charlton Heston & Henry Fonda ; "Patton"; "Battle of the Bulge" ; "In Harms Way" and "Longest Day" just name a few.
