Returning to model railroads after 40+ year hiatus

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Funny thread, Over the last couple of weeks I have found myself rooting around in closets downstairs and digging out the N scale stuff that I knew was there. It has followed me around for close to 45 years since I had to take my layout apart when I headed off the university. I did not remember that I had that many locomotives, or that much rolling stock!

I never thought I would start up again but I can’t stay away when I see a model layout on display, then my wife and I took the train down from BC to Sacramento this summer to see the Big Boy on display. Of course I had to get back into the Cal State Railway Museum …. That’s a great way to completely cave your willpower in …

Of course the 1 box I can’t find is the one with my power supplies in it and I know it’s here somewhere as I would never have thrown that out if I still had the trains themselves!

My reading over the last few weeks seems to indicate that one or two things have changed in 45 years!

Welcome back, sure you'll find you power units and have a layout up and running in short time.

I can guarantee that I will now find those transformers - I just ordered one from a shop in Vancouver that had a good price on an estate sale unit.

I am not sure what I am doing starting this up all over again - I make furniture, I have an acre of yard to look after, two dogs that need attention and I do wood carving ….. I need another time and money sink like I need a hole in the head …..

Ah! You'll fit in like a glove here then, we're all in that boat.😂

Ha! I'm right there with you. I've two places. Both right at 5 acres, one that includes a 21 tree orchard, 3 ponds, 15,000 volume library, the hobby wood and lapidary shops, and I am still working full time. Fortunately, I've managed to get rid of all the pets. I just have wild life to deal with.

So, I saw a set of Japanese “Red Arrow” passenger cars for sale - they are a powered railcar style, from KAto.

So, of course I bought them. They arrived are perfect, they look like they have never even been out of the box. Just lovely. So my layout will be a unique fictitious shortline crossing the borders of BC, Washington State and Japan ……

These are the little beauties in question ..

When we moved to AZ 30 years ago, I put up a big, ~200 foot G Scale. The kids liked it. I ran the switches on compressed air with toggle air valves. Worked well. But as the kids aged, and hmmm, so did I, I started feeling it kneeling in the rocks. So, I took it down and now just use parts under the tree at Christmas...
