Still learning off camera lighting (really need to build a better shooting diorama)
Missed last night's ore train with the C-628 on the head end. the C-628s and 30s and the few 36s left have been kicking ore cars on the west end of the system around mingo jct and the lake eire ore docks. One mad a trip east and has been running on the titanium ore trains recently. Today was a real treat as she was assigned to a local job to take some of the ore to a cement plant. I got to the plant just in time to see her spotting a newsprint car and the MP15 that normally woks the branch finish up their work.
Then I stopped over at the yard before headed home and saw this rainbow of power getting ready to take a train west.
those are some good looking customized loco`s you got going there

Nice engines and nice shots. They would look a lot better if you'd turn off the flash and use a tripod and a longer exposure though. Too many shadows from the flash.
Those are some good shots!! I like them. Is that a paper mill you have?
No real room to set up a tripod but once i get some new batteries for my other flash I'll try the shots with 2 to kill the shadows
Drew, there's always room for a tripod.

Check out this little guy at
http://www.opticsplanet.net/burris-pack-pod-ultra-compact-tripod.html. Inexpensive and you can set it anywhere on the layout without messing anything up. Your shots will look much better with just room lights and a longer exposure. Using the self-timer also helps to get the shot set up and keep the camera steady so you can get a good depth of field and minimize blur.
nice stuff!
i'm not sure what do you do for lighting (off camera flash?) but i agree with Jim, the shadows are not contributing anything here. more light from the top would have helped.
nice link for the tripod might need to try it, not sure if my camera and lens will balance on it.
As for lighting i'm using a remote trigger to fire the flash and have it mounted on a stand off camera. these shot as more light bounce and testing the tiggers as they are about models.
Hey Drew,
What are your camera settings? And, what is your light souce?
Canon 5D with a 17-40 L4, F-stop was 9 sutter speed 1/30s light was a 430ex with a cybersync receiver. bounced off the ceiling no diffuser
If you add a diffuser, that will help a lot with those shadows.
i was going to but was in my other flash bag in my truck and didnt want to go outside to the truck to get it
pics did look like they came from DSLR. it doesn't look bounced though.
with your FF cam i think you should be able to get away significantly upping the ISO to shoot under available light. + the tripod should be really nice. waiting for some more pictures
