Hello,

This is my first post and I would like to ask a simple question. I just recently purchased a Proto 2K SW9/SW1200 as CNR #7035 and I was wondering would the shell of a Athearn SW1200 fit with the frame of a Proto 2K SW9/SW1200?

My current diesel roster includes:

2 X EMD GP9RM (Chopped Nose)
1 X EMD SD40-2
2 X EMD F7A (One dummy unit)
1 X Budd RDC
1 X EMD F3A
1 X EMD SW9 (Converting to SW1200RS)

Hello and welcome aboard. Athearn made an SW7, SW1000, SW1500 and MP15. Never an SW1200. But, if it one of the first 3, it would take major modifications to to fit a P2K frame.

If you are converting a proto sw9 to an sw1200rs you're better off with the proto shell. I converted mine by adding number boards from Juneco and spark arrestors from Minatures by Eric. The only thing I didn't change were the trucks which I heard smokey valley at one time made convertion sideframes for it.

This old Athearn shell has a new P2K frame under it.

Yes, it was about a day's highly-involved work. But I had too much invested in the old shell I detailed and painted 20 years ago. It never ran well with the Athearn drive.

So to me the solution was clear. All the hacking was on the frame. No changes were made to the shell.
