I think i need to alter my approach. I essentially want a point to point layout with continuous operation. I need to define my points from a linear perspective, and add the loop later. Name my stations or major industrial sidings, and work from there, folding it down.

The last version looks good. Two suggestions however; if you make the two short sections in the upper left and right as continuous inner runs instead of crossovers, you wouldn't have to deal with reversing sections. I'm not sure if this matters to you. Secondly, if you desire more switching, a small peninsula could be added in the center that could contain a small industrial switching district, this wouldn't compromise aisle space.

Thanks Willie! I want more switching on this layout, and I haven't considered the wiring enough either.. i am going to toy around with it some more tomorrow, maybe add a stub yard in the center.

Here is a quick sketch. I have extended the route into the center a little more. also removed the two reverse loops. What is the minimum radius you want?

Choops, I plan on keeping my radius above 20". I think I can run what I would like...I do plan on running some long cars, but my last layout I think had about a 24" radius, and they looked and ran fine. I currently have only 1 operating locomotive, and its a MP15. But I plan on running six axel locomotives.

I like what you have done, but I was hoping to be able to turn my trains around on the reverse loop. Did you notice the below grade staging on the right side? It says in small letter 'staging a' at the ends of those tracks.

Here is the room drawn in cad. useable space in room is 13 1/2 X 10 minimum radius 26"
Shows you what fits.

That gives me alot of space to work with. I can have my yard in the middle, and industries scattered throughout the rest of the layout.

Ahhhh, just a few general points:

1) Reverse loops are easy enough to wire, etc, but if you're lazy like I am, why bother? Keep things as simple as possible to save time on maintenance, $$$, etc. I have only X dollars to spend on hobbies, so I look for savings. I would like a working signal system someday though. LOL!

2) It's often a good idea to have a switch lead / drill track / etc, so you can switch a yard without fouling the main. But there are plenty of proto yards on lower traffic lines that do indeed foul the main when switching.

3) Always consider how far you have to reach to rerail cars, manually throw switches, vacuum dust of the scenery, etc.

4) I dislike reaching over buildings, cars, etc - too easy to knock stuff down / over.

JMO and one size certainly does NOT fit all in this hobby. Good luck!

Thanks beach bum... I do think i might want a reverse loop to turn trains around on, even if it is hidden, or partially hidden and can serve as staging also.
I also am aware of reach constraints. I think i may switch to an around the walls style as opposed to a walk in with blobs, for that reason.
Ahhhh, money...I just ripped my old layout up, it hurt. I will have enough money to build the layout I want.
