I do it manually. I steadily lift the end of a car and back it up a little and set it down. Kind of funky, but I found it works best for me.How do you handle uncoupling the cars on the layout?

I had magnets on an old layout, too much screwing around. All my turnouts are manual so my fingers are on the layout anyway.I thought maybe you have the permanent magnets installed in sidings.
