Oh SO New

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

48 years old and first model railroad. HO scale, a TON of track, 2 engines and 8 cars and a powerbox that doesnt work. My main goal is to build a layout concentrating on the scenery aspect. Im not much into different trains going at once or all the sounds, I just want it to look good. My concept in my head is based around the Rocky Mountains between Jasper and Vancouver. It will be ohhhhh 18' x 10'. Anyways, expect some silly questions from me.

Thanks

skimpycamper,

First and foremost, welcome to the forums - you couldn't have picked a better place!

Secondly, and as important as the above, there are NO SILLY questions - none, zilch, zero. Everyone here was a new guy at one point and we all feed off each other. Even the most seasoned model railroader has questions :)

Anyway, as said, a very warm welcome to the forums and ask as many questions as you want, that is one of the reasons we are all here.

Personally, I am a little like you - more interested in the scenery and the realism of the layout and we have some first class scenery people here should you need advice of guidance. As mentioned, DO NOT hesitate to ask as your question (as silly as it may seem to you) just may be the question others are also thinking about.

Hi Skippycamper,
Yes, Welcome to the Forums here, as Tony above says even us Old Timers learn new stuff and we have a considerable amount of info to pass on too although sometimes it get pushed into the back of our minds and side tracked, so to speak just waiting to again be picked up by the next slow freight that passes.

I also like and want realistic scenery but I also want realistic operation too for the most part so I can spot cars and either pick up the empties or deliver the loaded cars supplying goods to the various industries or to the various market spots. To me it gives a more realistic aspect of operating the trains like in real-life. Also don't forget Track can and is scenery to.

I'm a long way from getting, even my layout main line done, as while I have a track plan I'm working from I find that I often have to change things as I go along due to the fact they don't fit in as well once you actually begin laying rail. And that a key aspect for you to remember, which it seems your already giving thought to, don't make things to jumbled-up so you can allow enough room for scenery.

Hope to see you around and by all means stop by the ANPL Coffee shop down the main list near the bottom.

Good to have you with us!

Welcome SkippyCamper.
Your layout is about the same size as mine.
I think it offers a lot of opportunities to learn a great deal.
Are you planning to use DC or DCC?
On your questions, Ask away.
