New weathered car (need opinion!)

I weathered this car over the past week. I am very critical of my own work and would like your opinion. The first picture will be the before the weathering process took place if anyone has any questions about my weathering techniques or how i acheived this look feel free to ask i will give you easy directions to help you get the look you want.

Looks really good, you made it to look like it was only pulled in one direction. Love how you made it look like peeling/pitted paint.

Hey Drew,

I know you worked hard on this project, but it doesn't sit well with me. I think if it wasn't so much "rust and grime" with more of the original color showing, it would look realistic.

Keep working at it.
 
I'd have to agree with Old 97. Incredible job, but a little much. In stead of reversing it, go full tilt used and abused. I'd suggest rub marks where the door opened along with some metal dings and hand prints.
 
The surface rust seems reasonably well done, but there is WAY too much of it and just in a generally shapeless pattern. The only cars I've ever seen weathered quite like this are some CSX boxcars where the new paint obviously didn't hold up very well.

I've never seen a car like this one this far gone. Also, keep in mind that the version of the paint scheme with the CN website below the logo is fairly new. That represents a car that received a full repaint sometime within the last 10 years.

Here's one a bit like the first model photo. Note that the majority of the surface rust and weathering is rust from the roof that has streaked down the sides, something that isn't really seen on your model above.

Actually, the effect you've got going on there would work really great for a horizontal surface, where the surface just rusts evenly without streaking.
 
Thank you i actually agree with you on the rusting a bit too much i wanted to do a car like the one you gave a link to but i can never do streaking like that.
 


The rust is outstanding if a wee bit heavy looks great,one question How did you do it ????? Oh love the road you picked

I have to agree with the others as the rust is a bit overdone but that's common for cars when you are starting out. I would expect to see some streaks from the top down with that much rust. Posting a copy of the photo you used as insperation/ prototype helps us understand what you are trying to recreate as well. I would like to know how you did this car as well.

You can add dirt and grease on the rails at the hinge ... perhaps ...?

you have worked airbrush? and how is the paint (No. Model)?
 
Contrary to some folks' opinions, there is not wrong way to weather a car. I've seen enough photos of rolling stock over the years to be able to tell you that there truly is a prototype for everything.

The CN box's rust pattern could have been caused by either a fire in the car, or the car's close proximity to a fire. The BN box's rust is very heavy and not impossible, though if I had done it I would have some silver or gray streaks or spots on the roof to show the galvanizing, as the paint coating fails first, then the galvanizing is exposed, and it eventually fails. The only thing you need to worry about is your modeling time frame and the age of the car relative to it. The BN car for example would not be in this shape if it were only a couple of years old when you are modeling. Other than that, knock yourself out!

Yes great points. This boxcar will be on a 90's era layout. It will not be an operating model. I just really wanted a heavily weathered car just set aside on a overgrown spur. So far I have only used Arcrylics and still need to do airbrush and pastel powder work.

About the galvanized roof, great tip. I have not started the airbrush portion of the weathering. I could easily add some silver or gray. Maybe just use a brush to apply it.
