Z scale decoders will work fine with most modern HO engines, since they only draw about .3 amps at full slip. The small size can be a real advantage in tight spots. I probably wouldn't risk one in an Athearn BB engine, but newer engines should be OK.

I got my Zephyr about a year ago and I'm only starting to get the full advantage out of it now, so just take it one step at a time and you'll soon be a DCC expert. :)

I'm using a D'trax Z decoder in a B'mann Ten Wheeler....That loco is so tiny nothing larger would fit, and it works quite nicely....

well now that i have two decoders installed and a single anolog loco set on the tracks i learned what happens when you leave a loco running and switch to another loco with the same controller the original loco keeps going until someone picks it back up again with a throttle.

i originally thought decoders would be dificult to install but they cant take more then five minutes
strip the wires
twist them together
solder all connections tape
done
i did find that a motor can be wired backwards and that front means foward only not reverse so i have to do a little bit more wiring with lights.
but over all its fun and really easy once you figure it out
