New N-Scale Layout — Need suggestions / Advice

Appreciate the positive comments! I'm very much in awe of where I'm at tbh — It's already more satisfying running trains!

Little update: Since this layout is larger than before, It was important that I kept in the good graces of the Master Commander of the household and reassured her that we would technically have more space for storage. I got the classic "SURE" — but this week she's been on a work trip and made a passing comment about the space and how it seems to be less space, so — Although I'm proud of this, I'm sure I'll get a comment, but — I did some organizing and moved things around a little bit! I'm happy with it at least :D

Also, I've started to experiment with the upper level — my main wish/want was to have a single track run through the hills to run long trains through. I initially was going to create a double bridge scene at the bump-out, but I didn't like the over-busy feeling with the three tracks. I think this solves my issues and I'm going to keep playing.

The next steps will be the town/industry above the helix — but I'm waiting for a couple of points to come in. I'm also noodling on how to handle the lower level loop, possibly thinking of hiding that under a city scape — with a lower level terminus station that has a large building — with the upper level being street level. Hiding the turn. Anyways, I'll keep you all posted.

You of all people should realize that when you try to do one thing on your layout, you you need to do 10 other things before you can get to what you want to ;)
 
Hey, fellow modelers — Small update here. I've been wanting to start on the upper landscaping, especially where the helix comes out at the top and the subsequent space I have for an industry. I need to figure out how much space I've got, with mountains and all of that to fully figure things out. But I am really trying to keep things simple!

With that said, every time I tried to get to something, I realized that I needed to figure out the actual backdrop situation, and of all the things I've seen, ensuring your backdrop is painted before you start on your landscape is a good place to start. So, that took a little longer than anticipated. I also went with curved sections for the left and right side of the layouts as I think that will lend itself to photograph better.

Just exploring height/topography and some possible fascia approaches with some leftover board. I'm also hoping to build my scenery in a way that I can pop the side of the mountain off if I need to get into the corner of the layout. It might be achievable. Anyways. I'll be working a little more now I have a solid backdrop to get going with!

Continuation from the upper left side work. My vision here is probably a little grand, but I'd like this "town" to be set on a mountain. One of my goals is to figure out the scenery and also the roads. I'm thinking that the back main line could have a station, with a small platform. My vision is that this station is built up against a mountain and then using a Kato/or other overhead station, have that somewhat built into the mountain, with a small carpark and steps leading down. Then, possibly having the little town (I need to think of names) and a small set of shops going up the street. Along with a small industry/which is the main reason for this town's existence.

There is a town called Harpers Ferry which has a hillside street with the buildings working their way up the side. So, wondering if I can mimic that somewhat. Then — thinking of using my previously used large girder bridge as a road bridge/possibly even leaving one rail on one side and having it as a single road entry with stop/give way signs on either side — maybe some signs of an older railroad?

I'm also exploring the route the road takes when leaving the town heading to the right — thinking the road will leave the scenes through mountain tunnels on both sides. Possibly a gas station and a McDonalds here — also going to run some trains through this to see if I'm not blocking too much of things — though I do like elevation changes on things — plus the right side of the layout can be more open / possibly a farm/fields?

Amazing! And your son seems to have grown up some as well. Not sure what program you are using to develop the layout, but is there a chance you can publish it in this thread?

Hey Ron — Firstly my son Oscar is now coming up on his 3rd Birthday, so he's growing up!

For the software, I use RailModeller Pro. I got the free version but I think there were limitations in size. For me, I used it as a great starting reference point, especially when using Kato (it has all the track elements built-) So it was really awesome for me to get a gauge for the space.

Depending on how your brain works, you can totally design everything in the software/multi-levels stuff also. I found the ability to access other layout designs helpful, so I opened those and took/copied/pasted some of the elements.

I've not done an update in a while, so I need to do so — I got a 3D printer, which has been remarkable! Will try to update soon!

Hey Ron (and all) — It's been a little while, in typical life — things got in the way. I also purchased a 3D Printer, which has been a game-changer in my ability to create/explore on the fly. It's also given me the ability to not focus on a single area of the layout and jump around, and not complete anything. With that said, I have made progress. My main thing has been to play with the layout — I certainly jumped into landscaping quickly last time and became aware that the setup wasn't fun. This time, though, I'm really enjoying how things have been going.

I'm going to get a video sorted soon that walks through where I'm at and will share.
