I COULD USE SOME ADVICE on this, here is a diagram I plan on using at my control center and wonder if there is a better/standard way to name or number the blocks or turnouts?

THANKS for your expertise!! lasm

Just went through your entire build and its coming together really nicely. The video's really shows some nice details.Just last we I had picked up a can of the foam that I've been meaning to try.

Hope this helps some how. The first pic is my trackplan from my last layout I tore down last christmas. And the second pic is a control panel schematic I had made up.

THANKS Lynn for your input!! Also, for attaching your schematic, yours looks more like the real thing.

For now I guess I am just printing off the jpeg that I put together on paint, down the road I may tweak with lights and stuff.

I like your concept. May I suggest renumbering the blocks? For me at least, it would be easier to number the blocks in order of the train running. For instance, from a stand still, the train starts in block 1. Then moves on to block 2 and block 3, and back into block 1. Now there is an easily understandable flow of traffic, 1 to 3. Then, each siding follows that, 4, 5, 6, etc. This also allows you to add more industry later if wanted, and simply continue the numbering. Or you can break up the yard into additional blocks if wanted, and numbering won't be jumbled.

Like I said, this is only a suggestion and makes sense to me. Maybe there is some reason for your numbering that I don't see, in which case what I said is null. Up to you.

Thanks, Lynn, for the input. Your suggestion makes perfect sense.

I went south to north and west to east, which is the standard for the (highway) transportation industry. We also use survey stations like 1 + 00 for 100 feet or 10 + 00 for a thousand.

The railroad has their mile markers and I wondered if they did their switches using a mile marker plus something for switches, but then how would you do the switch yards? I noticed their mile stations seem to run from some major yard or something, not necessarily in any standard direction. This would be in line with your suggestion.

Thanks again, lasm

Now that you say that, it makes perfect sense about block numbering. For the switch naming, I tried to find something on google, but it seems there is no standard naming convention for a yard's switches. It only makes me curious about what convention to use for this.

I've always struggled with the numbering and always tried to do picking a number 1 as was suggested and move down the line.

Some more scenery progress photos, methodocally working my way around the layout:

Thanks for looking!! lasm

Looking great mate! And it might just be my eyes or the picture distorting things a little, but that tunnel looks like a challenge :)

The tunnel is just big enough for everything to get through. I have a youtube video showing the train going through, will probably share it in a couple days.

Thanks again for the kind words!! lasm

Video shows prototypical small to medium sized sawmill setup with overview and progress to date of my layout, also one pass around the track!!

Thanks for watching!!!! lasm

Great video and explanation of the saw mill. Think this is the first time I have seen your entire layout and as imagined, it is impressive and CLEAN!

Great job mate.

Lasm, great job on the saw mill, looks very realistic. Thanks for posting the video, the layout looks like it is going very well.

Thanks
Scott

Great tunnel LASM, it looks so real! The real tunnels I know in Baltimore have very little clearance, like yours.

Thanks for sharing your work. I enjoy your posts and videos too. Also it is a great thing you do on YouTube to share your how to videos. My 5 year old grandson can find videos on YouTube, but he has been watching Lego videos. You never know who you are helping, one day it may be one of my grandsons or even me!
