I just bought the lionel great western set for my kids. it was working then stopped, smoke came out, and now only goes slowly one direction.
The smoke is from the larger transistors on the circuit board.
I even replaced the two that seemed almost melted together, but they heat up too. and that didn't change the way it works.
It goes forward slowly, and 3 times backward less slowly.

Is there a quick fix? Can I buy a new circuit board?
Any assistance would be welcome, or else I have to buy a new engine.

Yeah, don't mess with it any more, because you're voiding the warranty. Contact Lionel, get an RMA, and send it back for repair or replacement.
