Dallas Modern HO Scale

Modern HO scale modeler
hey guys, i made some background buildings out of foam insulation board (the pink one) i'm tryin to find paint to paint it but apparently everything i found at home depot will burn thru it (or so says the man in the paint dept). can anyone tell me what i can use?

latex paint will work. i think you can use it like a primer the spray
enamel over that, i think!! test first

try a water-based paint. Acrylic paints from arts and crafts stores would work. Floquil Polly Scale would work.

However, regular solvent based paint SHOULD work. Your locomotives are made from polystyrene. Foam boards from the home improvement store are also made of polystyrene.

Buy the board, cut out a scrap piece, and try out different paints.

No, solvent based paint like Floquil will make a nice hole in your foamboard. I've made several mistakes into puddles on my layout. :) Your best bet is to stick with latex or acrylic paint. It won't damage the foam at all. My experience has been that, no matter how many coats of latex I used, solvent based paint will go right through it and attack the foam.

Ohh so true Jim. Latex or water based paints are pourous when dried. When the water evaporates, it leaves a crater behind......trillions of craters per square inch.....Enamel thinners pass though easily. Ever have an upstairs sink leak and drip into the room below? Water based paints "Porosity" at work. Even most enamels are semi pourous but to a lesser extent.
Stick with the water based stuff. Besides, it wont stink up the house so much!

well there was a guy standin around when the paint dide was talkin to me and he said paint it with acrilic forst then spray the primer ovr it because that primer would eat the board, i want the primer grey color on the buildings. the thing is all home depot sells is freakin enamel and laquer paints, so i didnt end up gettin nothin. whats a good brand of water base or whatever i sould get?

Go to Walmart! The Apple Barrel and other acrylics there brush on a little thick, but can be thinned with water and will spray through an airbrush just fine. Cheap too! Plus a gazillion colors:D

You can use enamel or latex based paint on styrene. Is it easy to make buildings from Evergreen styrene and shapes? How many have you ever made before? The first one is difficult. By the time you do about 20, it gets easier. :) If you just need background buildings, the Walthers kits would be a lot easier and probably no more expensive than buying the styrene from Evergreen.
