I'm planning on building a small shelf layout, 8' on one wall and 16' on the other wall on a 1x6

I only want one loco, a switching loco but I don't want any DCC or sound in it. Can you buy anything like that anymore? It seems like they all come with dcc and sound. I'm looking for something low cost.

I have several of the NEWest NW2's and they run GREAT! I paid a little, a few dollars more but I KNEW they were NEW and NEW stock. The one in the fleabay listing might be an older version????

The ones I got were DC but DCC ready and I converted them ALL to DCC (a simple drop-in). Sound is NOT a practical option due to size, unless you use a separate sound car with them, which I have made.

Check out the Walthers web site. If you are looking for N scale this switcher has a sweet appearance, is DC only, and will be a good runner:

The price is $119.

THEY have a wide selection of DC locomotives, both HO and N scale.

The vast majority of N-scale locos are still available without DCC. A lot of Bachmann's newer stuff is not available without DCC, but anything made by Atlas, Arnold, Kato, Micro-Trains, or Walthers is available without DCC (there are many others available without DCC, but these are the ones that I know of off the top of my head that have small switchers). Also, if you see a DCC equipped loco you like, you can run it off a DC power pack.

That is a lot MORE than I paid for my Kato switchers.

The loco shown is NOT a photo of any model of any scale, its a drawing!

N scale supply has both NEW and good used N scale products. The prices are reasonable and a lot safer than fleaBay. It's well organized and one can list by roads, type (rolling stock/loco/etc)

I missed your thread earlier. I would look at BLW . Kato and Atlas are solid runners. I didn't see anywhere you said which scale you are in.

This is the N-scale section of the forum, so N-scale would be a pretty good guess.

Unfortunately the only n-scale locos I've purchased recently are both DCC, so I am no help.

Buyer BEWARE.......... Most DCC locos can run on BOTH DC & DCC out of the box, however there are a few rare locos with DCC decoders that are factory set for DCC only, but they can be programmed easily, one value to set it to compatibility mode. I bought a decoder for one of my Kato NW2 locos (forget the brand, not a Digitrax) and had to set one register, very simple, as it came factory pre-set to DCC only. If you do not have a DCC controller, just take the loco over to a friends, model RR club w/DCC etc to reset the decoder. Once you have done that, and then only if needed, you should not have to do anything more/again.
