N scale Geeps no headlight?

I have several new Atlas Geeps that appeared to have no headlights. Taking them apart I found that they have yellow leds with a 2k resistor in series and barely illuminate. I replaced the leds with a warm white one (kept the resistor in place) and the headlights work great. This is the second time I've came across this, the other one was a Kato GG1. I'm wondering if the board manufacturer are doing this by mistake or for some reason. I run straight DC with pwm throttles, so I'm just posting in case anyone else has the problem of dim headlights. It was an easy fix...!

Part of it is so the led will last longer. Part of it is so there will be less "bleed" through gaps in the body, or shining through areas with little paint.
