That certainly is a different, but very effective, approach. They came out looking very realistic indeed. Always something new to learn.

I have just about finished all the ground cover and the road at the coal mine I need to do some tweeks and add more trees on the mountain but for now I think it looks ok.

I was going to do a bridge leading off the layout to the main highway but could not get it to look the way I wanted so I extended the cliff instead.

How do you guys think the guard rail looks do you think it looks to scale?

Good idea extending the cliff and the coal mine came out great, don't be afraid to weather it up and just keep in mind dirt flows downward. If you don't mind I'd like to make a suggestion with the rockwork, if you get some matte medium( I make my own ) and give your rock outcrops a spray with the matte medium and get something like the woodland scenic earth its very fine or even something like baseball diamond dirt sifter through a panty hose then put on a sheet of paper and just give the dirt a light blow onto the rock faces here and there while its wet and you would not believe the effect it has on the rocks. Can do the same with fine ws leaves, after all moss does grow on the rocks.

Lynn,

How do you make your Matte Medium, if you don't mind sharing? I go through buckets loads of the stuff and it gets a bit on the exxy side :)

Extremely simple Tony, get a gallon empty container, put about two inches of white glue in the empty container, fill the container about half way with water , shake shake shake, fill to top with water, shake shake shake, let sit for a few days and pour into your squirt bottle as needed. I had one gallon container that sat for several months and it was clear as can be so obviously the longer it sits the clearer it get. Obviously once you finished filling the gallon and giving last shake you no longer shake it. Although I haven't tried it but you can probably use the settled white glue again that is left in the gallon once top portion has been depleted.

Lynn Thanks for the kind words.

I like the idea for the rock work and will defenetly try it.

One other way to do your "rock work", sprinkle whatever ground cover you want over the rock face first and let it settle, then very lightly spray it with matte medium. Once the mate has dried, give it another GOOD spray to make its location permanent.

I have found by doing that the ground cover tends to sit naturally and the matte sort of pushes it into crevices and cracks and where it might naturally be. Just another idea.

Key phrase here is very lightly spray it with matte medium, lol how many times I've had it on there perfect and poof gone.:o

A little update I have not done much on the layout these last few days.I am busy playing the part ofthe good husband, father and grandfather for the holidays getting decorations ready for Christmas testing lights and such this week I will be forced to start putting them all up,so I figure it should be near 0*s as usual.Enough of that I did manage to plant some more trees on one of the mountains looks like another 30 or forty to go.I did start planning where I think I want my roads to be now I need to figure out which buildings I want,it is going to be all industrial not enough room to do both.So here are a couple of pictures.

Looking good John. Are you doing ashphalt roads or good old gravel? The trees look very good.

I think I am going to do asphalt roads with gravel leading to some of the industries and the general store.
