I really like that ballast in between the switches!

That is a mix of three colors from Woodland Scenics. If I used Katos ballast I be in for near 100 dollars.Woodlands stuff cost me 18 dollars and should be enough for the whole layout.

Excellent advice! I think it will work well with Lionel fast track as well. I won't use any on top of my track but on the sides as you have done is perfect in my mind.

Thank you! The colors I used are gray, light gray and black at 5:1:1 ratio best thing to do is take a piece of track with you and match color for color.

A little more work over the weekend finished the run around track and have the spur for the lumber yard complete.

I also started the permanent wiring under the bench.

Not much progress on the layout in fact I took a step backwards 2 of the 4 #4 turnouts decided to cause derailments so I had to take that section apart and fine tune the turnouts.took me awhile to get them to work right but all is well again.I did do a little more ballast in the yard though. Here are some photos.

Coming along nicely. I know what you mean with the turnouts, I've had to pull a few back up on my layout from trial and error.... At least you found the problem early.

2 steps forward, 1 step back describes my entire model railroading experience. It's not a step backward, it's getting it right and learning.

I guess your right it could have been worse the landscaping could have been in place. I will do a lot more testing and checking before any landscaping.

Love the rocks. They look awesome.

Ballast work looks nice too! Just keep at it. You'll get there, but probably some more steps back too, that's just the nature of the beast.

Thanks for the compliment I am having a ball doing this layout and will be working on it for a long time I just received the new river coal mine in the mail so that will keep me busy for awhile.

I finished my bridge and the bridge abutments. The bridge is made from Bass wood, the abutments I carved from styrofoam and then painted.

Looks good!! Thanks for the photos! It is going to take a while to finish when you are adding the details as you go, but I am sure it will be worth it --lasm

Hope you've tested the track by running trains before you "cast them in concrete" w/ ballast & glue. Otherwise you'll ruin alot of track tearing it up to fix any problems w/ the track work.

I agree with cajon, make sure you check all your track work before setting it permanently in place. Also having feeders to each section to supply power is a good idea as well.

Everything has been teted and re tested. I have feeders at all ends of the turnouts and about every other section of track. Thanks!

I have finished building the New River Mine but it is not in place yet. I am still contimplating how to rework the mountain so I can fit the run around track in. It will probably go here.

And I will reconfigure the turnouts and add a track to the inside or towards the left of the photo and use the outer most track the one to the right for the run around. What do you guys think.
