My adventures in Ho Scale.

Now that its summer and my time has freed up some, it was time to get back to work on the layout. I started to do some rock work in the elevator area. I have now started to add a layer of sculptamold to the mountains, blending rock castings and cliffs.

This is by far my favorite part of scenery. There will be a lot of rock work in the mountain areas.

This is where I'm at as of now:

For color, I was thinking maybe something like this. I'm still looking at lots of photos.

As for technique. Not sure other that a lot of practice on scrap castings.
I love scenery! I had a friend years ago say make sure you highlite the inside of the cracks or the space between the rocks. How?

He took a solution of black India ink and water and literally took a 3” paint brush dipped it in and let it run from the top down. Nothing fancy and he didn’t blend or high light anything special. Thats how he started. He would brush colors around the cracks but that’s how he got his highlites.

There are so many ways just have fun with it

I was putting some final touches on my cliff walls. I had several pounds of sculptamold left from my N scale layout that I used up initially .
I opened up the box I just bought to finish and noticed the texture was different. This stuff almost reminds me of smooth-it from Woodland
Scenics. Not sure if it will make much difference once painted, ground cover, trees, under growth. Sure looks the same dry in the box, but something with the formula has changed.

The two together.

I'm thinking the old stuff looks much better (natural) but I really don't have a choice at this point. I purchased a 50 pound box.

Thoughts?

I added the last piece to this ridgeline and roughly blended it. Im going to end it here and pick it up down the line. The silos and the elevator are going to hide some of this, so there's not much point in making it run all the way across. This took most of the morning. I was having a fit and kept breaking castings. I finally made a large one, and made a paper template in the rough shape and cut it out on my band saw.

Been looking at this mountain for a couple of days and wasn't sure what to do with it. It need something to break it up, and because of its shape rock castings were not fitting well, nor could I make them look right.

I remembered what I did on my N scale layout to solve this problem, and it seemed like the perfect fit. Im going to do a simple scene of a communications tower (cell phone) with a 20FT container as a building. It will be a fenced off area like you see them. Fairly simple, but effective solution.

Here's how I built it:

A square of plywood with a brace hot glued in place.

Some old school cardboard strips and plaster cloth.

All that will need to set and dry completely, then a layer of sculptamold added to blend it all together. then rock it up as a cliff face.

Stay tuned to see if we can pull it off!
