I had a really good time building the grain elevator, I decide to work on a couple more silo kits for the other side. I have to say this has been a enjoyable project. One mistake I made on the first set was I added the end caps and didn't cut the rounded end top plates square to perfectly sit against the building. This step was not in the directions. I discovered this by going to Walthers website and looking at the newer grain elevator directions (the new darker blue box). I have the older lighter blue box kit. Don't think it will be a big deal, just some sanding, plus it really isn't that noticeable that it sit 1/16" away from the structure. There are a couple of options to fix this.

I posted this earlier in the Coffee Shop, but for those that don't visit thought Id put it here as well.

The basic foot print of this building is now done, The next big decision is, do I add 4 more silos to the other side to even it up? I do have 1 more kit in my stash. Its already a pretty sizeable structure, but not sure if it looks lopsided. I do have the room.

Here's how it looks as of now:

In my post yesterday I mentioned the lack of instructions on making this sit flush. See what I mean about trimming the upper and lower overhang and leaving the end cap off. I didn't do that with the R/S silos, but with some sanding, it wont be noticeable. I guess that's a good reason to check Walthers website for more up to date assembly instructions. Mine defiantly did not have this step where as it did on the current instructions downloaded from their website.

Anyhow, this is how its supposed to be built to sit flush.

All I can say is, Holy crap!!!! That is an impressive elevator!!!!

Those aren't the kit silos are they? They look to be scratch built and slightly taller than the kit silos. Though the contours of the top and bottom match the Walthers kit parts perfectly down to the slight overhang at the top, and the flush bottom pad.

I love the added walkways and bigger dust collectors on the front.

Thanks for sharing that, gives me some ideas on what to add to detail it up more.
Yeah you’re right they look taller don’t they, but I think they match the position between the third and fourth row of windows in your picture.
I believe it’s the Walthers elevator kit with two add on silo kits.
The whole thing is taller. The elevator section and all of the silos are taller than the original kit. There's an added section making the elevator about 4" taller and the silos were built up to match.

Your right Willie. Now I see it. Where he added the walkway and railing to the door is supposed to be the bottom floor entry/exit door.

He sure made it all seamless though!

Wish I had the artistic eye for scratch building like some, guess that will come in time. This is only the 3rd Walthers kit I have assembled, and 2 of those were in N scale.

Mike, I like the lopsided look and I would add the next silo kit to the long side. It makes it a bit different and I’m sure you could or will find a prototype picture of the silos.

The issue I have with the kits is all the plastic putty I used to hide the seams. Walthers could have gotten them tighter. I do need to finish my own. Thanks for posting yours as its pushing me to think about my Grain Terminal again

That looks terrific! The "lopsided" look doesn't bother me but then again, bigger is always better so It is a tough decision :D. Looking forward to more updates!

Started working on the base the evaluator scene will sit on. Its going to sit down in a valley with the mainline running higher. That's my vision anyway. I look to have room for a loading track, and 2 storage tracks. I have some other things planned for this area as well.

Here's the base:
