It is brass of unknown make. Missing the smoke box cover. Tender looks like it never had much detail to begin with. Excellent condition otherwise. Another brass engine goes dcc. The interesting thing, what is that speaker and. Circut board? Crude sound? That might help identify the maker. It looks factory install. Might help find a new smoke box too

I was going to guess Akane but that valve wheel on the front doesn’t match anything I’ve found.
Do the tender axles have cams or split pickups?

That hacked-up speaker isn't factory. It looks like a home made chuff unit. You can look for a Cal Scale smokebox front, that should be close to what came on it.

I have not been able to find any fronts at all, cal scale, bli, or odd brass part anywhere

I believe that is for PFM or PBL sound. I've installed many of them. Back in the day only folks who could afford brass locomotives could also afford the sound system. I am guessing you will find a choke and a capacitor on the engine's motor as well.

Actually it could be. Back then, the hacking of speakers was often the only way to get them to fit. 2" was the smallest available. Wasn't until about 1983 that PFM came out with the ported speaker that would actually fit in the tender.

This is why I laugh at the people that gripe about the equipment available these days. I fully remember these monster speakers, decoders the size of Road Island where each vendor was 100% different, open frame motors that drew 2 amps and caused the TV and radios to wig out, power packs without grounded cases....

I remember the Modeltronics Athearn GP35/GP35 dummy set with a powered unit, and a track powered "sound unit" in the dummy. The dummy had a large-ish speaker vertically mounted inside the long hood. For its time, it didn't sound bad. Especially since it was the only game in town.

Unfortunately that is a wrong smokebox front; it has those crescent cutouts for pilot mounted compressors. The M1 Pennsy had compressors on the side and the smokebox front was fully round.

Nice find, but i'm wondering about those 4 axle trucks under the tender. I know I1, Q2, J1 had them, but i don't remember seeing any picture of M1 with four axle trucks under their tenders. But i could be wrong.

They are the wrong trucks. M1 only had 3 axle trucks under the tender. Wasn’t going to worry about that until after the boiler front sorted out. I haven’t had the time to see if this even runs yet.
