UP to acquire NS for $85 Billion. This will create a transcontinental super railroad. 50K miles of track! You know a BNSF/CSX deal won't be far behind...

UP/NS Merger

Random thoughts:

I wonder if UP will do a NS heritage unit, lol.

Will the eastern US see Big Boy anytime soon?

If I'd have known NS could be had for a paltry $85 billion, I'd have picked it up myself. 🤣

If the UP/NS deal is ultimately approved, BNSF/CSX are likely going to follow with a merger of their own.

Since BNSF stands for Burlington Northern Santa Fe and CSX for Chessie, Seaboard and other, we can only wonder what the resulting merger railroad would be named. I suggest "Santa Fe". LOL Let's take the war bonnets nation wide!

Ha! If the eastern infrastructure could handle the likes of the Erie Triplex, the C&O's Allegheny's & Jawn Henry, the Norfolk & Western Y classes, etc. I don't think the big boy will be too much of a challenge. Remember the big boy is only "biggest" in length, and popularity.
Google says 'biggest' by weight too; 1.2Million pounds at 133 ft.

If only you knew. You could have outbid. Then you would have had a fantastic layout.

Because UP and NS are publicly traded you can still put in a bigger bid. Especially if it’s a cash deal NS would have to do it’s “due diligence” to appease stock holders who would want the most $$$ for the stocks. I would suggest $92 billion cash would go well! Wait you don’t have that floating around? Maybe Mr Buffet would like to expand and IMO NS is a better fit for the BNSF than CSX is or even NS with UP.

I think this goes through no matter who ends up with NS. Maybe mid 2027!

"Norfolk Southern will only be a memory!!"

Sumthin' tells me a lot of NS employees are gonna have long memories.

If the UP thinks they're going to quickly "re-orient" those employees -- especially the "southern boys" -- to the "UP way"... they may discover another think coming fairly early in.

It will be like Penn Central all over.
The former NYC guys didn't trust the PRR guys.
The PRR guys didn't care for the NYC people.
And both of them looked down upon the New Haven guys (who were forced into the deal).

I also remember the Conrail purchase/merger/split/takeover. NS went to their new employees before Day 1 with a list of disciplinary offenses that would be strictly enforced. The Conrail employees didn't take kindly to that, but NS's response was "Tough Tamales".
We'll see how things play out, now that the shoe is on the other foot.

I swiped this from another forum member...

UP will never give up their name. Norfolk Southern will only be a memory!!
I believe that has already been announced. It will be Union Pacific Transcontinental Something or the other. So shorten to Union Pacific.

I think the real issue there was they tried to merge management. Two conflicting ways of doing business that didn't inter-mesh well. UP actually had some issues in that regard when they tried to merge with the Mopac. Lesson learned.

The Union Agreements are the Union Agreements regardless. The issue, if any, there will come at end of the contract and new bargaining begins.

This is a far different scenario. Both Pennsy and the Central served same region and had multiple lines which they couldn't get rid of. Both struggled financially and were burdened with passenger traffic which was most developed in the part of the nation they were serving. Both had deferred the maintenance do to lack of funds, leading to multiple derailments even daily. Neither Union Pacific, or Norfolk Southern have those issues, both are relatively healthy financially and physically. It really will be Union Pacific adding more trackage to itself, trackage and equipment which has been generally well maintained. If anything, the takeover, or buyout if you will, would speed up traffic through huge bottle necks like Chicago and St. Louis, leading to faster and less expensive shipping.

I remember when a company merged with company I worked for and all the same things were being said that I have read here concerning what the employees would not do. Guess what you can complain all you want. But when the major company comes in and tells you the plan that you will agree with or you will have no job. Most will comply, some will leave others will cause a problem. But once they find out who is causing the problems are gone in short order union or no union. Btw I stayed with new company for another 18 years while others who thought they knew better then the new management missed out on the wonderful company that evolved.
UP will come in as company in charge and if they are smart, which they are. Anybody that causes a problem will be gone. No if ends or buts you will be gone. So if you don't want to work for the UP, better go job hunting.
