Thanks for the replies, gentlemen. To answer a few of the questions:
There is not a financial emergency, just a longer term need for my wife's grandmother to have money for property taxes and other living expenses. She is 75 years old, healthy, and sharp but just lost her husband of 56 years and i slooking for some help.
I am willing to put in a decent amount of time and do research on items I attemtp to sell. I never like the idea of "blindly" selling items that I have no knowledge of. I think I agree that it is better to take time and sell these items in pieces or small lots. Coming to this forum, reading, and asking questions is part of my process in doing my research. I have been searching ebay and brasstrains.com looking for comparable examples on the brass. It seems that I can find at least one comparable on most of the stuff, except the cabooses. However, the brass is a small portion of the overall collection. There are all kinds of modern engines and more rolling stock than I know what to do with.
I see the pros and cons on ebay. I can appreciate the broad appeal of ebay, but have observed rising fees coinciding with rising fees on the paypal side as well. My concerns are actually more with the shifting policies towards sellers. Did you know you can't leave negative feedback for a buyer anymore? I frequent vintage BMW enthusiast forums and have recently heard some pretty worrisome tales of sellers getting the short end of the stick and left negative feedback in situations where it may not have been justified. In a nutshell, I guess I would be worried about making a large number of sales and opening myself up to the potential hassle of a changing ebay environment.
There is a pretty good sized model railroad business here in the seattle area, Eastside Trains, I have considered taking a couple of the brass engines in there and asking them their thoughts. I guess I could also consider discussing consignment with them.
To answer an earlier question, there is probably more Great Northern pieces than anything else, maybe 40-50 percent. However, the rest is a variety.
Thanks, again. I appreciate the ability to discuss this here.
