I bought this Loco from a shop in my area (Orange County, Ca) at discount and unpackaged. It came like this from Athearn. I would like to know the road name it may have been made to have and why they would have something like this at Athearn. Testing maybe? Maybe a Demo?

I know (I think) it is a SD70M. It has DCC/Sound. It makes a very realistic Start-up sound Most of my other Loco's don't make these type of sounds at start-up

Looks like a SD70MAC to me. CSX, Conrail, burlington Northern, BNSF, Kansas City Southern, and Alaska Railroad own or have owned them. (I think UP might have had them at one point, I'm not too sure)

Its a UP body SD60M.

The identifying features are the raised railing behind the cab (vs dropping down), the 3 grill lines to the rear of the hood on the conductors side (the SD70MAC has two larger ones), and the Conductors side cab door (only early SD70M's and a few early BN SD70MAC's have that door, beyond the SD60M).

Here's a completed model, as you'll notice, you're missing the walkway guard behind the cab, that's supposed to come with the raised walkway/railing.

If you find more of those cheap models, let me know!

If it is the same hobby shop, they got a small slew of them a week or so ago. I got a pair of N scale SD70Ms from them, at about 70% off retail. Same thing, they came from Athearn R&D.

Thanks for your help,

I figured they were from the R&D shop at Athearn. I bought them from Arnies in Westminster, CA

Yup. I was there yesterday. They had a pile of HO F59PHi's for $15 each, and entire trains of N scale Coalporters for $5 each. I wound up with an N scale train of UP Coalporters, FRED car, and an Atlas B40-8 for a tick over $100.

I don't know who well Arnie does with mail order but I used to shop his store when I lived in LA and always got good prices and service. He seems to have a relationship with Athearn where he's able to pick up pre-production models and short runs of of engines and cars. His weekly specials look pretty good at the web site.
