"wonderful photos! Yucky, is SOOOO cute.
and the hedgehogs! Share the story, please?"
Several years ago, my neighbor came to my door saying that while she was weeding near her window well, she something move. She asked if I would go with her and check it out. Sure enough, in the window well was a little hedgehog. I called animal control and told them what we had discovered, and they replied that hedgehogs were not indigenous to the area, therefore it couldn't be a hedgehog. They said to just leave it alone and it would crawl out and be fine. Sheesh! I told them it would die if left there...and hung up. So my neighbor and I scooped the little thing out of the well with a shovel and put it in a box with some water and lettuce. Go figure. What did we know about hedgies?? I called a local vet and asked if he wanted a hedgie. He told me to bring it on over and they would take it. Well...by the time I had a chance to take it over, it was tooooo late! I had fallen in love with the little guy. I read I all could and researched hedgie care online. I had a cage built for him, bought him a wheel and some hedgie necessities (and toys!) named him 'Morty' and life was good. He was so sweet. He would sleep in the hood of my sweatshirt as I cleaned my house, he loved to hide in my flowers in my front yard and he was just a joy.
He developed a cancer that is not uncommon to hedgies and I had to have him put to sleep after about 2 years.
My next hedgie, Charlie, I rescued from a high school science lab. When I first saw him, he was without food, water, wheel, and had cedar chips which are deadly for hedgies. I sort of hedgienapped him and took him home. He was such a funny little boy. He would come when I called him and loved to be held and to play hide and seek. He developed, after a couple of years, wobbly hedgehog syndrome which is a paralysis which starts in the hind feet and slowly progresses through the entire body. It is extremely prevelant in hedgies.
After Charlie, I one day stopped by a pet store (I am not a pet store person, but I was curious to see of they had hedgies). When I asked about hedgies, they looked puzzled for a minute and then 'remembered' that they did indeed have some. They opened a CLOSET and on the top shelf was a BOX with 2 hedgies in it. They wanted over $500 for the pair and I was not going to pay that. A couple of days later, after not being able to get them off my mind, I called and TOLD the manager that I had $200 and I was coming to get the hedgies. After I picked them up, I called and reported them to a hedgie rescue and they were not allowed to carry hedgies anymore.
I named the babies Random and Lily and just posted the pictures. They were great pals and I just loved them. They lived good long hedgie lives.
I don't have a hedgie now, but I am starting to get anxious to rescue another!
Wow! Way too wordy...
