If I keep my cat inside a travel crate while I play with my model trains, is this considered animal cruelty? And will my cat after a period of time leave my layout alone because they will get bored of it?

The kitty should be fine in the carrier, we put a strip of carpet in ours so he thinks he is laying in the living room. Also position it so he can see what I am doing.
Sounds like he wants more attention. Mine use to get up on my lap when I was on the computer and tap the keys. I am such a push over.
Cats can be like angry women. They'll trash anything for attention.

I have 1 out of 5 cats that will try to mess with running trains. The other 4 see what's going on and will curl up somewhere to lazily eyeball things. I keep a water filled spray bottle nearby. Just reaching for it makes them all disappear instantly.
is this considered animal cruelty?
No it is not. Putting a piece of carpet in it as
Dave suggested will make them feel even more comfortable. My suggestion is to just close the door to the layout room. Isn't that how you keep him/her away when you're not operating or modeling?
Animal cruelty would be NOT letting them run trains!
Cats are awfully smart. It will catch on to your punishment and retaliate, after you've gone to sleep.
Once the cat starts making contributions to the train fund, then it can come out of the crate.
