Kato and Athearn

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

You should be able to do it but I'm sure you'll have to rig up something to hold the Athearn shell to the Kato frame. I'm sure that Josh or one of our other modern diesel modelers will be able to give you more details.

It might work. I just recently put an Athearn SDP40F shell on a Proto 2000 E6 chassis with very little modification. I just had to cut off a 1/4" of the P2K frame. The shell is held in place by a little dot of Super Glue on the side.

Yes, if you're willing to re-work that shell majorly. The Athearn and Kato Dash 9's are quite different. You might have to modify the chassis a bit too.

If something is worthwhile to you, you make it work. I've put together some locos that were real shotgun weddings but they worked out in the end.

Not really. Buy an Athearn Chassis if you really want the Athearn shell. It'll be much easier to swap out the motor and gearing.

Even if it's not relevant to anything in this thread except the title, here are two pictures I took some time ago to illustrate the Athearn and Kato versions of the GP-35. It definitely is Athearn 3635, Kato 2370! Don't say the Kato is better because it has number boards; I added them.
