Hello and thanks for browsing. I'm new to this forum and to Kato trains. While visiting my daughter, who lives in Japan, I went to the Kato store and purchased a 3-509-1 HO train set. Upon arriving home, wanted to add lights so I purchased the Kato 7-504 light kits and in the passenger cars, there's absolutely no issue and the lights work fine. When installing on the motorized train car, the motor does absolutely nothing but works fine when I remove the light kit pick-up plates that you install to make the electrical contact required for the lights. I'm assuming I'm getting a short but don't know where else I can place these things to pick up electricity. Any tips please and thank you.

You're not getting a short. If you were experiencing a short, it would trip a breaker or overload your train power system. It's more likely the light kit is breaking the connection to the motor. Check and see if the motor is retaining contact with the light kit installed.

Thanks for your reply. Not sure what you mean by retaining contact, novice here..

I have the HO Kumoha 40 and it is very similar to your Kiha. The motor gets power from the small board, which rides on the two metal parts on both sides.
The light pickups that you are squeezing under the floor panel may be causing the board to lose contact with the metal runners.
Make sure that the floor panel is clipped down at all clip points. It should not be lifting up.
