I build this annex to my layout about 10 years ago and just recently I have put structures along the back wall and laid a little temporary track along the front of the annex. The buildings along the wall are supplied with track. Problem is; the OPEN SPACE. I find that I have to fill it up with any clutter than I can find. Any project that I start, all the stuff winds up there. I have plans for this area and the buildings that are to go in there are BIG and take up a lot of space; plus there is a mountain going into the left hand end of the annex (out of sight). I cannot control myself. Any empty space, and any area that I can put a cardboard box over to create space is used...oh; and I don't put things up, and I work on several projects at one time on the 16x22 foot layout. I can't be the only one alone in this. I keep telling myself it's only temporary, and then I go to another end of the layout and do the same thing.

I don't dare show any of my cluttered space, but I have it wherever I haven't put landscaping/structures on yet.

Your not alone! I suffer from it as well/ I have tools scenery materials all over the layout. I eventually take a day and clean most of it up
but fall back in the same pattern. I love to start projects but never seem to want to finish once the newness wears off.

It doesn't help that I have a 27 foot peninsula that only is foam and track at the foot of the basement steps. It becomes a catch all for
everything carries down that needs to be put away.

Probably why I don't show more photos of my layout progress than I do.

Growing up it was always the Pool table in the basement that collected all the stray stuff, mainly laundry. Other that tools, not much stayed on the layout. Now that I am on my 4th layout there is all kinds of stuff on the layout other than trains. Now that the scenery has begun, that is starting to change, slowly. I can relate to Willie, only showing the non-cluttered areas. Someday I'll show more!

I never had that problem of tools or materials on the layout I kept that pretty clean. The workbench and any other flat spot in my hobby shop is fair game.

I’m trying not to do that this time since I have the hobby shop remodel done. I didn’t want wall cabinets in there because it closed it in but finding places for things I do want, is more a challenge and I’d ending up in the wood shop someplace.

It’s never easy, we all have good intentions but things happen and things do not get put away. 😲

Don't get me wrong, I do clean up my mess when the project is done. My point is that My work table was too small and I don't have any room for big ticket items...well I do if I move a card table into Joan's sewing room but the mood is kind of taken away from being surrounded by material and thread instead of trains and things, even though she hasn't been in the mood to come down to the basement to work on anything since the death of her son; but that should change one of these days (I'm in no rush, she is still grieving and I am not going to rush her...and I don't want to appear that I am taking over her area). So things will remain the same for a while. She used to come down here everyday, especially in the winter and make quilts, and wallets, etc., all day but now she only comes down here to watch TV at night when we call it quits for that day on all projects and watch a movie or series of TV without any hassles. She kind of worries me, she just sits in her chair all day upstairs, every day and stares at her tablet or I-Phone

I have much more clutter space than work space on my workbench. And a lot more clutter space than I have layout space, even at the school house.
