It's my own fault and I hate it!!!!! I'm forever losing items of this great hobby to the clutter monster that has taken over my train room. I have a small diorama that I'm working with and everytime I want to do something, be it scenery, place a building, use some figures ect. ect, I can't find the items that I know I have and end up not doing anything or purchasing the items all over again. Guess it's time to rent a dumpster and get a shovel.............

July RMC had an article about this very issue (and a great one about MRL 391). It takes a little discipline to make a place for everything and keep everything in its place.

I buy those plastic 3 drawer storage things from wal*mart, ~12"x12" in size. You can remove the top, and attach another one to it also. I'm up to 12 drawers, and it works awesome for keeping mostly everything in line.

I use plastic shoe boxes that I buy at Dollar Tree & write on the end w/a black magic marker. I think I have about 30 for surplus building projects, about 30 for electrical items, plus 4 of the boxes w/small drawers, plus a round 8 shelf turnstile that is loaded, plus my workbench that has storage built into the back. Then I have a long shelf(1ft.by 6ft.) for scenery material.
Do you think I have enough storage area or do I need to add more?
Oh, I forgot all of the rolling shelves under my train tables for paint, locomotives, rolling stock, more scenery items(trees), tools, tools, tools, & more tools, welding supplies, & genl. junk.
Last year & part of this year I threw away about a pickup load of scrap buildings.
I'm not a rat pack I'm a packed rat.

That's why I own 5 hacksaws.:o :D

Considering hobby parts, tools, kits, etc., I have them in the right places...I just forget where that is. :D :D

Who'd of thought of that, gee I must be the most undisciplined person on this planet. Anyway if anyone gets straightened out, let me know how you did it,, I sure could use some tips :D

Cheers! Willis

After reading this thread I turned around in my computer chair to observe the mess I call my hobby/layout room...and then, depression set in. :)

Guess it's time for a little cleanup...

Just last Thursday I cleaned up my work bench. I was more of an organizing of the piles.:D Here's a picture I took a couple days ago. I guess it's still somewhat organized.

Say everyone, Let's see your workbenches!? Get those cameras fired up and hope the lenses don't shatter when you push that shutter.:p

Ron, I'd have to do some major cleanup on my workbench to get it anywhere near as a good a shape as yours. Mine is covered in all kinds of non-railroad stuff like fertilizer and fire ant killer. I've get to get it cleaned up since I've got some freight car kits to build. I'm going to get to it...pretty soon now. :)

Dang it, Old 97! Today, I was looking for a jar of paint that I knew I had when this thread came to mind. I looked around and realized that a major cleanup/straighten up was needed. From then on, every time I looked for a tool or something I thought about this danged thread...all day long  .

Jeeze, guess I need to do something about it.:D :D

My bench is a bit messy right now since I'm in the process of building an 8 x 8 layout. Pardon the mess.

After looking at the post it appears to be a woodland scenics advertisement.

Your workbench is a picture of neatness compared to mine. Is that scrap carpet you have on the bench? That's a pretty good idea. It would help stop all those little pieces that seem to disappear to nowhere. I wish my work bench was close to the layout. My layout is in the basement and the workbench is in the garage so it's a lot of back and forth trips for me.
