"Collecting", for some, is a big part of their hobbies. Guns, model trains, cars, art, guitars, etc.I have been in model railroading since 1970 with several scales and the amount I spent on them. Yes hobbies are expensive if you must have every locomotive ever made. I may buy 4 or 5 locomotives per year now that I am in ho. I enjoy the locomotives from Athearn genesis, scale trains and the like. freight cars are getting expensive also but you can find many great cars on the secondary market, also locomotives!!
I know guys that buy 40-50 locomotives each year, what for? And most are old, that's ok if you like rebuilding mostly junk! Guess most have never been touched, they just sit on a shelf with parts laying around it. His layout is the same, its a shame because he has a nice space that is just covered with parts, junk and old engines and freight cars. He wants guys to come around but not many do
I rather buy quality and enjoy them as they are run. Why you may ask why, age, physical issues have stopped me from adding my own detail , dcc installs, etc.
The locomotives being made today are just amazing, nothing like it was back in 1970. So I'm taking advantage of it. That's why I buy four or five per years instead the 20, 30 or more of what some are buying. I mean how many locos can you run or store on your layout.
Me, I've become a minimalist as I get older with all my hobbies. I don't want to burden family with my "stuff" once I'm gone.
