The NP track went right in front of our driveway, following US 61 north of St. Paul, MN. Grew up on a farm with a long driveway right to 61. While growing up, was pre I-35, really the only practical route from St. Paul to Duluth MN (port city) went right by our farm.
Walked a lot on the tracks, collected railroad spikes (had a big gunny sack of them, could barely lift it) back when I was about 10 yrs old.
That was my initial inspiration. Later I collected historic photographs and use that as a template for much of my new layout.
Here is a photo of my great Grandfather Isaac M Banta at the Forest Lake depot, a couple miles from where I grew up:
Here is a photo used as a basis for part of my new layout:
So far I have modeled the Depot and Potato warehouse. Have a couple fill in buildings, as well as a kit for the hotel and grocers which will be added.
This is where I now live, still on the Northern Pacific line to Duluth, about 60 miles north of where I grew up. This is Groningen MN:
I have pretty much everything in this pic modeled on my new layout, except the mail crane.
I think photographs make an excellent resource for modelers.
