What do you do with your rolling stock that did not turn out?
I've trown a few (well, maybe more then a few ) in the garbage
because I could not salvage them. The finish product was not very good due
to poor paint stripping, poor painting, poor decals, overspray, crappy weathering etc..
You can start from scratch (again!) only so many times. Then its time to say goodbye
I chose "other": Disassemble them and put the shells in a junk box in the backyard shed, so I can use them later for airbrushing and weathering experimentation.
Some "experiment" did go straight to the garbage before for sure. But this is not the case
of an 'experiment" going beserk..
I am on the 3th re-paint on two identical cars. Its not turning out the way it should.
Weathering? Nyet! Stripping the paint? Nope! Re-painting? Nadda. Decals? Crooked and
cracked. Nothing works. I started from the beginning, again and again and again!
I know how to do this, but by the time I am almost done it turns out like &%#^* !!
Funny thing is, I am almost done two other cars (light to medium weathering)
and no problem there, they are turning out pretty good.
Bob, not all of us have your present modeling skills. Are you saying you never, in your whole modeling career, produced a model that went a little sideways on you? If so, you are a better man than me.
MLW, I've had times when it seems like I can't get paint out of airbrush or a decal off a sheet without something going wrong. With some careful rework, even a pretty crappy job is salvageable. At worst, I paint 'em MOW gray and use them for work trains. It's hard to make a bad MOW car.
Box them up and send them to ME!!....LOL If your like me, you are your worst critic. I can never please myself. I do things all the time and others love it but I am always thinking I could have done better. You'd be amazed what you think is a mistake but others find it as art.
To me I save everything..Its parts, its scrap, and its practice canvas. No 2 weathering look alike. things get damaged, worn, rust differently. Every piece of rolling stock shouldnt look alike or people will only look at the first 3 or so cars...LOL
Kinda like my friend who has a wood shop. I ask him what he makes and he said, "Mostly kindling!!"
I have converted some really ugly (Conrail) boxcars I got in a package deal to railyard storage and repair shacks.
Build up a loading platform at the end of a siding for on-track storage, or remove the trucks and install a man door for office/storage off track.
Cut a boxcar in half and have a sheltered welding/repair shop next to the tracks.
Repainting, bad paint, heavily weathered and salvaged components all can be parts of a gondola load of scrap.
Mikey
brilliant! While railfanning i have seen scrap everything in gondolas, cars, airplanes, double-wides, kitchen appliances, other trains etc. if its metal, i have probably seen parts of it in a gondola.
since im pretty new, i need a lot of practice weathering. To my wife's dismay, i keep every bit of HO scale modelrailroad junk that comes my way.
always keep them. you never know. one of my worst eye sores are my boxcars i got at the local flea market that are about 10 years old and have the wheels and horn hook couplers perminantly bolted on. but i keep them for scraps
Take your old rolling stock and create the SIDING FROM HELL!! I've kitbashed, painted, weathered, and decaled some of the UGLIEST cars known to this hobby....yet I can't pitch them out because there seems to be some appeal to them. SO....I made a graffiti siding from hell off of my main industrial area...kinda abandoned and it has worked out well. I've even taken an old Brill Trolley and turned it into a Diner/Greasy Spoon. Believe me there is always an alternative! Hope this helped and good luck!
I don't have a junkyard on my layout and don't want one.
Siding from hell? That was my first layout ever
I will give it another "one last try" and if it doesn't go, then its garbage.
I wonder if I can throw them in the recycling bin? probably not Which is too bad.
Talk about garbage Do you feel like your keeping things you'll never use? I was just looking
for track nails and man! what was I thinking! I got bits and pieces of the most useless think ever!
