i never heard of these type of auto carriers

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

It would be cool to pick up one of the cars and make a static display with some doors open and Vegas being loaded. Maybe someone will come out with some....

As for the Vega itself, mine could not keep timing belts! Went thru three @ $500 or so each time (with install) before I sold the car for $50.
It was a hatchback model and the springs that hold the lid open let go one day and took out the rear window. (Thank Goodness my hands were clear!)
Drove it for a year with a makeshift "rumble seat" sticking out the back!

I does seem a waste to build a car just for one car that was produced for just 7 years. What happened to the prototypes?

On the other hand, the Verta-Packs almost doubled the amount of autos that could be carried per railcar, they were just specifically designed for a particular model of vehicle. Once there was no use for the cars anymore, the racks would have all been scrapped and the base flatcar reused for standard autoracks.

So i assume the doors don't open? darn....and I even found the little AMC bastard lol!! its yellow which is odd as I remember having one in a copper color too....oh well...I may strike it lucky and find it

I do remember the Vegas being junk. Had a neighbor that bought one new, but didn't keep it long, and had a college room mate that had one that barely made it up a small hill.
Pintos of course had their issues. They were under powered and had a reputation for blowing up since the gas tank was right by the rear bumper. I remember asking my next door neighbor once, why he always went down the hill and around the block when he left for work in his Pinto Squire wagon, when just going up hill was quicker and shorter. His reply was that he couldn't back out into the street and go up hill from a stop. He needed a running start to go up hill.
As for the AMC Gremlins and Pacers, and Hornets, they really weren't bad cars. They were just ugly. The Pacer was a joke though because many owners traded in their larger cars on the Pacer expecting good gas mileage, but it really was pretty heavy and actually got lousy mileage.
The Maverick was actually a pretty good car, or at least no worse than most of the American cars that were out at the time. In Brazil, the Maverick was made for several years (longer than in the US) and there is a very strong following of Maverick fans in Brazil, where high performance versions were among the fastest cars available in Brazil in the 70's. They even got a station wagon version of the Maverick down there.

Reminds me of the movie "Top Secret" when the Nazis hit the Pinto and burst into flames.
A classic!

Neat thing about Mavericks..lots of Hi-Performance stuff intended for the Mustang will bolt right up! They make great "sleepers"!;)
