Hutch's Conway Scenic Railroad Layout

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

I'll bring it as close to the edge as possible using flex track. Even my 48" square piece of bench required moving my tool box. Now I have to figure out where to put that!
Yes,bring it to the edge as close as practicable; however, you need to leave about an inch minimum between the edge or your roadbed and the edge of your benchwork/sub road bed just as a safety margin incase an engine/train comes of the tracks :)

Now that I already don't have room for my toolbox, I guess I'll go 66" for my loop and have nice 30" radius curves.

Great choice. You now will be able to run anything. It will all look pretty good doing it. Since you have 66" be sure to build in easements into those curves. Your stuff will look even better running through those curves!

I think going below the pipe is a good idea. What you can do is hide the pipe with a removable backdrop.
I have the same issue and what I did was to paint the pipe and wall flat black and brought the back drop right up to the pipe.

One or both of these. I feel l8ke the top one might look silly running passenger cars.
Not really. I have seen the Napa Valley Wine train use a smaller GE 44tonner. Tourist trains run what they can get their hands on. Possibly get a GP7 or 9 which have had successful life extending time on many tourist railroads.

I second what Mike says about easements into the curves, really makes a difference as the locomotives don't make a hard jerk into the curve.

Still waiting for the bonus to go into my account but now I'm considering these two. One day when my layout is somewhat done, I'll try painting one of these to match the one on the real railroad.

These are BLI trains which I may become their poster child. They are also refurbished so the price is right for buying 2.
