How Many Different Locomotives Road Names do you Have on Your Layout?

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

Sitting in front of the computer, I can think off hand of at least 30 road names spread out over 100 locomotives, steam, diesel, and one electric. The most plentiful road names I have are Colorado Midland, Midland Terminal, Union Pacific, AT&SF, Gorre & Daphetid, and surprisingly, Pennsylvania.

How many different locomotive road names do you have on your railroad? Since I'm modeling the Fallen Flag railroads in Wisconsin in the 1970 - 1990 era, I have many different road names.

What railroads make apperances on your layout and why?
There are really two questions in there. What different locomotives road names I own? And what road names make an appearance on the layout?

In the collection are amazingly only 31 according to the spreadsheet. I expected to have more than that.

For the layout, if I ever get that far, I am planning to do Pueblo Colorado. It will prototypically have Colorado & Wyoming (the steel mill), C&S (so also CB&Q and Fort Worth & Denver), Denver & Rio Grande Western, Missouri Pacific, Rock Island, and Santa Fe. Because in the early 1960s both the GN and NP were modernizing their diesel fleets the CB&Q was getting hand-me-down FT units from both roads and further handing them down to the C&S stationed in Pueblo. I am checking to see if the Mopac ever used any T&P units to or through Pueblo.

When I run trains in the 1914-1919 timeframe locomotives seen are Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway plus Kirkstall & East Seacroft Railway
Locomotives in the 1930s timeframe are London & Scottish Railway. (LMSR)
Locomotives in the 1968-1973 timeframe are British Railways with some preserved steamers in LMSR livery or British Railways black livery.

I thought about TBTR but it lacks something. The one I get a kick out of is FiveKidsDadX…but it’s a tough call because my boys will figure it out and rat me out to SWMBO!
SWMBOR, can't lose with that one.
I'd make one up just to see if she or the boys work it out.🤣

That is an interesting one. Are you doing the prototype, the museum model, or both?

Somehow got the decals, then saw that when part of Weyerhaeuser Corp there was a GP-9 numbered 311. That was the number of my Coast Guard unit. So, detailed and painted two BB GP9s and used the decals for 311 & 312 knowing it was not the correct livery. I recently pulled out all my old but highly detailed BB locomotives to put in a case but sadly cannot find 311, only 312.

Knowing it was not prototypically correct didn't bother me. Just look at the reporting marks for current layout.

I have a shortline off CSX (CR/PC/NYC), set in 1999. I run equipment that fits my place, purpose and time. These road names that appear:
- GTR, my freelanced freight road
- LBTA, my freelanced commuter road
- CSX and CR, for intermodal exchange and runbys on their road
- Amtrak on CSX
- Occasionally NYC and PRR excursion train
- Work and wreck train with engines still in EL paint

Also, an online customer has a small switcher, painted in their company scheme, for loading and spotting chores.

I think I have 314, a GE U-18-B.
