How do you paint trains without airbrush?

ModelRailroadForums.com is a free Model Railroad Discussion Forum and photo gallery. We cover all scales and sizes of model railroads. Online since 2002, it's one of the oldest and largest model railroad forums on the web. Whether you're a master model railroader or just getting started, you'll find something of interest here.

This is a bit of a different story than your first post Ken, specifically: "Please....There are those of us who do not mix well with air brushes. I have had several and they only work in one out of three attempts. This is very frustrating as my favorite paint is PBL Star Brand. Also many of us live in sealed homes these days where you cannot set up an air brush safely. In my case the garage is either too hot or too damp to paint many days." Sounds like you've had a lot of frustration at some point. Nobody on this thread has ever said you HAVE to have an airbrush, even Kevin after a somewhat tongue in cheek response, said there are alternatives, as did I. When asked, the original poster stated that cost was his main concern. He was afraid he'd have to buy a special compressor and other items besides just an airbrush. When told that wasn't the case, and one could buy a quality tool in the $100.00 range he opened up to the idea. I guess my point here is, lets all be careful not to discourage modelers from techniques we may not like, but rather encourage them to try everything. I'd encourage the OP to try all of the techniques and use the one he likes best, but don't be discouraged or deterred if things done come together immediately. Practice makes perfect. I've taught ten year old kids to airbrush and they enjoyed the heck out of it. There is no such place as airbrush jail. Every tool has it niche. I use mine on locomotives and rolling stock but I also add accents with brushes, and when building wood structure kits I use brushes almost exclusively, and sometimes an airbrush to add accents. It all works well together!
