So for my next layout I am going to have 22" Radius curves, because that is the widest I can do, but I also like large 6-Axel diesel locomotives. I know for most locomotives the min radius is 18" but recommended is 22", but I was just wondering if 22" could be damaging at all to larger locomotives. (ex. wear, binding)
 
If you're limited in table area, you don't really have a choice.
Running 6 axel locos and long rolling stock on such tight radii would seem to dampen enthusiasm in the hobby. Yeah, I'm sure there will be some who will chime in here that they really love the idea of long freights on trolly track curves.
I would recommend you stick to locos and rolling stock that look fairly comfortable in tight track until you can get more room to spread out.

I run 20-inch (Shinohara Code 100 sectional track) and 18-inch radius curves on my layout. In the case of older Athearn Blue Box SD-7's and PA diesels, I removed the wheels from the center axles (outside bearing trucks). However, I haven't had any problems with my Life Like E-units running with all six wheels on the trucks. Unless you have problems with derailments on #4 turnouts, I wouldn't worry about wear on the wheels of you 3-axle locomotives.
 


I run both Athearn Blue Box 3 axles (with all three wheels) and Walthers Proto SD-45 on 18" radius and haven't had any problems so 22 should be fine. 22" is largest radius and 18" is the smallest on the mainline. I currently have 1 tighter curve in the yard that they larger locos have to take the alternate route on since it's part of a runaround for the yard engine. Keeping your speeds down also helps. I have Code 100 snap track and flex track if that makes any difference.

I'll agree with @D&J RailRoad though it is stretching what looks good though.

Restrictions on running certain pieces of rolling stock due to tight radii, weight restrictions, etc., is certainly prototypical. Pennsylvania could only run their T-1 4-4-4-4 non-articulated steam locomotives on the run between N.Y. and Chicago for just that reason. Some diesel road switchers were prohibited from positioning freight cars between buildings due to the sharp curves.
 
I have 1 Well container car that I cannot run on an 18" radius so it has been sidelined for the current layout. :( Just picked up some Walther's Budd passenger cars and they look funny but run. I think I'll need to do some fine tuning to get them to run well. Wasn't going to pick them up but my kids keep pretending that the caboose's are passenger trains.

You mean to say that your kids put passenger cars on the end of freight trains? Honestly I do this too sometimes 🤣, I like to think the railroads are shipping a private car. !!!!!!!!CAUTION RIVET COUNTERS!!!!!!!! I also run my Kato p42 on the front of freight trains. I have a fictional Northern Mid-West short line railroad and I have made up that the railroad bought an aging Amtrak P42 because of their fast acceleration and in hopes to modernize their fleet. I have a proper Amtrak train for it, but I hardly use it. Personally I really enjoy seeing a P42 in freight service.
 


The C.B.&Q., and perhaps others had waycars (what they called cabooses) that were also called drovers cabooses. These were combine cars with passenger areas, a baggage area with baggage doors on each side of the car, and with a cupola for the brakeman and conductor. These could be run at the end of the freight train, especially in branchline service.
 
I bought a Dash-9 once (forget the manufacturer - Athearn RTR, maybe?) and had to return it because it could not handle the 18r curves of my layout. For a while I restricted myself to 4 axel locos unless they were specifically advertised as being able to handle 18's. I do have some 85' passengers cars that I run behind my 4-6-4 Hudson on the 18's. they do look a little funny, but I don't mind.

Even thought the end car has an observation platform, my youngest son almost always insists I add a caboose. 🤣

There's a prototype for everything. Back in the Olden Days of Yore, Amtrak would rent out their F40s for freight service when not being used on passenger trains. They were used on local-ish freights, since their small fuel tanks restricted their range.

I have a few Athearn RTR Sd40-2s that claim they can run on 18" Radius but, alas, they slow down and start derailing.

I would say it depends on how silly it looks. I am pretty certain shorter wheel base 6-axel diesels will do fine and look fine (thinking of Athearn SD9 and Atlas SD24). On the other hand the longer wheel based more modern, SD70 and -8 & -9 plus, locomotives might have trucks that really turn and hang out from the side of the chassis and just look ridiculous.

Unless you run trains almost non-stop I don't think wear is a real issue. I mean, yes it will wear quicker, but I've yet to wear down anything to the point it has to be repaired for it. And here I am talking about running equipment at all (10 or 12 a year) the train shows non-stop all weekend long for ??? maybe 10 years.

You can easily fit large diesels and rolling stock in that scale with your space restrictions while also being cheaper cost-wise. The vast majority of modern N Scale is made up of 6-axle diesels and rolling stock. In HO, you will have binding and increased wear with those curves regardless of what the manufacturers say.

Thank you for the input, and I do wish I could put an N scale layout in the location that I want but I already have an existing one and I desperately need a new HO Layout. N Scale is pretty fun but I only like just running trains, not really doing switching, I always seem to derail cars 😂 .
 
Damn, things must have changed a lot in the past 12-13 years!

My first layout HO layout was a crappy bachmann ez track thing and that had (from memory) 15" radius curves. I then got rid of that and went with flex track with a minimum of 15" radius and a maximum of 18" due to space. I found that I could run some decent sized engines without them looking ridiculous. In fact, I think I recall correctly, the recommended radius for most engines/rolling stock back then was 18".

I admit, it has been a long time since I played with HO but I would be surprised if you couldn't run the majority of engines/rollingstock on 22" radius curves without them looking out of place?
 


I will admit that some things could look a bit odd...a UP 4-12-2 on 15" radius (if it would negotiate it at all) might be a bit much. However, I run a Zephyr consisting of an E5A/B (Proto 2,000 E6 chasis with corregated siding), and a mix of 85' and 70' Athearn blue box passenger cars on 20" radius curves. I don't think it looks too bad. And, it is my layout! If a person has room for a large layout that has minimum radii of 36", fine. But most of us don't have that kind of space. So, have at it, and ENJOY!
