Interesting!

I did not know that and it was not taught that way in school. maybe that has changed?

That's why I love this thread, I learn many new things I did not know or had forgotten about.
I will give Edison that, he had ideas, BUT he also had money so he could just assign or tell a group of his employees to figure out how to do it. Then of course when they did, he would get the patent and claim it as his own. That is how he and Tesla had a parting of ways, he told Tesla that he would give him a big bonus to increase the efficiency of the dynamos by x %. Tesla did, but Edison wouldn't pay him because he was "just" an employee doing his job. And we all know the rest of the story of how Tesla went out and invented the 20th century.

I wish I had a few hundred people I could just tell to implement my ideas. Had a really good one the other day.... and now I've forgotten what it was already.

Many companies have employees sign an agreement to the effect that, should they come up with something patentable, the patent will be taken in the employee's name, assigned to the company. The company may or may not pay any royalties on the invention. They may simply note the invention on the employee's review/evaluation, which may or may not help when the next round of layoffs occur!
